Deadlift Q&A from Instagram.
Question #1 (01:30 - 02:48): What kind of mobility work would be good for the deadlift if I can't maintain a neutral spine?
-
Question #2 (02:48 - 04:33): How can I train around a back tweak without a trap bar?
-
Question #3 (04:33 - 05:53): How do I keep my knees out of the way during the deadlift?
-
Question #4 (05:53 - 07:09): Do you deadlift and squat on the same day? Do you squat or deadlift first?
-
Question #5 (07:09 - 08:02): I am a big guy, why can't I get into a good starting position for the deadlift?
-
Question #6 (08:02 - END): How do I know if I'm dropping my hips too low at the start of the deadlift?

I have struggled to learn proper deadlift for years now. At one point I started thinking my legs are too long. It always felt awkward and unnatural. Today I tried with the advice you give at @8:50. This is the single most important element that fixed all the problems (aside following your 5 step deadlift). My back felt great, position felt great. Thank you so much Alan. Without your advice I would still be scratching my head how to properly deadlift or get injured by now.

Nathaniel Watkins you might not using enough hamstring / glutes therefore only pulling with your back (i don’t really know how it’s possible but getting better mind muscle connection with my hamstrings from rdls removed all lower back pain from my deadlifts)
@jamesgrego4978
@jamesgrego4978 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t really like the whole back ‘tweak’ thing... it’s either a sprain or a herniated disc. Both can heal on their own, but if you find your on the ‘stuck on the floor’ mode on a semi regular basis (multiple times a year), you probably want to see a doctor, find where the herniation is, and deal with stretches to help correct the issue. I ignored my herniated discs for 7 years and it turned into basically crippling pain and borderline paralysis. Had to have surgery to correct it.
@TFreshour08
@TFreshour08 5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesgrego4978 If by sprain you mean spinal erector "strain" then I agree with you. I believe the word sprain only applies to ligaments which your spine has lots of them. I am not a powerlifting coach but from a medical perspective its a lot easier to "tweak" a spinal erector than it is to sprain a spinal ligament or herniate/bulge a disc. Most ligamental injuries come from repeated bouts of (something). Disc injuries happen a lot when you pick up something and aren't paying attention to it, you're old, and your back is generally weak or in a weird position when you go to lift. Sure these happen together too but I'd bet 9/10 back injuries are erector related and not disk/spinal cord related.

I saw the advice with keeping the knees in line with the arms briefly on another of your vids. It's so simple but after adding it in to my deadlift last night, it's made such a difference!! Its impossible to see your stance properly at all angles unless you have cameras set up everywhere and then it's to late seeing it after the deadlift. So this one point is great for a reference point on back straightness. Thanks dude for all the info! My deadlift has come a long way because of all your points and tips.

Great video as always, Alan. I thought that the little cue that you discussed towards the end of one of your videos a few weeks ago - to rotate the elbows externally (helps to get the chest up) just before pulling in the deadlift was golden. For the five-step deadlift, if you have the tendency to hyperextend (like I do/used to) set your abs at the top instead of your back. This’ll help reduce and hopefully prevent your hyperextension. Hope this helps any hyperextension sufferers out there!
@kiddkaos1

I have this problem. How do you deal with multiple reps?
@Diderpderp
@Diderpderp 5 жыл бұрын
Thinking about doing a slight crunch at the bottom after you get your breath has been what works for me. If need be, do your reps in pairs and restart the set up between. Hyperextension is much more harmful on the low back than rounding is, so *do not* rush your reps. Imo the problem is our low backs/erectors are much stronger than our abs so they’re trying to compensate.
@kiddkaos1

Dude I have this issue and that's exactly what I do to solve it. After I "set" my back (into hyperextention) I then tighten my abs to the point that I start pulling my pelvis into position and my back out of hyperextention. I try to feel equal tension in front and behind, and imagine my torso as a solid cylinder. Do you find using a belt helps?
