Gotta do it bud! I went for the first time last year...I will return every year now. Watch the fishing reports and be flexible with your timeline...it can be epic...or slow...depending on water clarity.

Great technique! Are there many snags on the Rainy? Love to do this on the Wi river but snags often force us to abandon. Great video!

There are snags in places but the dragging techniques work best over sand and sawtooth bottoms.

Excellent informational video. Will this method work thru summer? This is extremely similar to my home water.

Great video. Rainy has some awesome fat walleyes that time of year. That first fish is a hawg! What braided line is Chris using?

do you think this tactic would work on the Tennessee river? right now temps are ranging from 46-52 depending on the section of river. Also would this tactic work at night? or would you change color? I am in Knoxville TN, and would love to use this tactic next time out.

Seems to work well on every river we fish, especially if the water is a little fast or dirty. Should work after dark if the water is clean, try dark colors. Good luck!

I know you released this video a few years ago but hopefully you're still monitoring the comments. I have been looking for a new technique to try on my home river. It's a little hard to fish because it has a fast current and a lot of snags. Typically I anchor/spot lock and use a modified lindy and crawler in the current. This works well and I've caught several big walleye doing it but there's also a lot of rough fish in the area that I have to weed through with live bait. I've been looking for a technique to more specifically target game fish. I've actually tried doing this jig trolling technique but haven't been successful. I feel like I'm probably missing something. A lot of the current here is 2-5mph without many current breaks or even river bends. So maybe it's too fast for this method but I wanted to ask you a few questions to maybe get better at it. What kind and size jig are you using? Are there certain depths you prefer to target fish this way? And is there a certain angle you like your line at while doing this (like 45° is the general rule for bottom bouncing.)? Maybe I'm overthinking it but it's a method I feel like I should be able to use here. Thanks in advance for any advice! Your videos are always entertaining and I enjoy seeing big fish.

I do best dragging jigs in moderate to fast current in 5-15 feet of water and I often use three way rigs if I have to go deeper. Rough fish can be hard to avoid. Sometimes you can catch fewer rough fish and target the walleyes with a three way and stick bait.

We typically do get a remote border crossing permit as there are fewer boats and some good spots on the Canadian Side.

Jason Mitchell Outdoors that’s a smart way to do that. Keeps you safe from the mounties :)

From what I remember, you need to have an Ontario fishing license, Minnesota license and purchase/ register a remote border crossing permit. You can go to the border crossing on the Ontario side to get it. There is also a new way where you can call a phone number and register your boat/ person for the day but don't remember the exact details. Opens a lot of options when you can fish both sides of the river.

What length and action of blank were you using for those heavier jigs and fighting the big fish in the current?

I know that Chris is using the JTX-mag. It's a 7'1" medium light.

We like a 7 foot medium fast action from our JM Elite Series Line Up... in our opinion, the perfect jigging rod. We like a little bit stiffer blank in current.

Hard to eat the fish when you let them go if you aren’t going to eat the fish you shouldn’t be fishing leave them alone

Very ignorant statement. Many catch and release opportunities do very little harm to the fish and the spring season on this particular river specifically requires you to release fish so that they can spawn and create more fish. There are many catch and release seasons or slot/ size limits where you have to release a particular fish. If everyone kept every fish they caught, we wouldn’t have many fish.

catch and release in typical 10-15 fow does no harm in that cold water. a single hook lure like a jig no bleeding fish no ripped up mouth
