I have a map with all my different areas for wild edibles and times of year they can be harvested. Its awesome that most people won't touch wild edibles because of the fear of poisoning ones self, but sad at the same time. Back in the day most people knew what they could or couldn't consume outdoors. Now they have no idea. Sad. More wild food for me though.

Thank you thank you thank you for this video. I grabbed some berries on my way home and went to search what they were, and saw people confused water hemlock for elderberry! I couldn't find water hemlock berries to compare them to, so when you said they turn into seeds, not fruit I felt so much better! David the Good saves the day again 😅

Hey, thanks for making this video. I see elderberry growing every place. I have always been hesitant about picking it because I was concerned about it might be hemlock. This really helped. Thank you.

Great video. We have lots of elderberry on our mountain homestead...I don't believe that any of the plants are the Water Hemlock, since we are up on the mountain, but I wanted to make sure I knew the difference since I understand that the two grow together and I did not want to take any chances...Thank you sooo much for making this video...

It's funny how people confuse these two plants. I've never in 100 years seen any similarity, except for white flowers.

I would say it's easier to mistake wild carrot for the hemlock though once you understand the difference (especially in the blooms) you can identify them even from a moving vehicle. I've got all my family and friends that ride with me able to tell the difference now. They'll say "That's carrot and that's Hemlock" They often grow together as well.

Many folks like myself are just bad with plants. I say I have a brown or black thumb with how incompetent I am at plants. But I think if I put my mind to it, I could learn the basics of identifying some key species, both ones to avoid as wells as those that are particularly useful.

Water hemlock (I think it's also called hogweed?) can also be confused with Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrot). Careful people!

I found a curious tree with black berries falling off on a pathway. This may be a wild tree or something that the caretakers planted. It also used to be a neighborhood back about 100 years ago but those houses are all gone now and nature has reclaimed the area minus the pathway. Some Adams Needle from these houses are still around. I thought perhaps they were Elderberries but I guess they are not because these have big pits in them. Any guess what it might be? People had walked on them, squishing them and insects like yellow jackets were sucking up the juice. Like I said, the most distinctive thing about this fruit was the large single pit. More pit than fruit in fact. Its like a bead. From your description, its not Water Hemlock either. I live in Northeastern Connecticut if that helps…..

So your water hemlock looks like Queen Ann's lace or wild carrots which I've eaten the roots of only. So now I'm confused.

Is that the Western Hemlock or the other one? The one I have smells really bitter. Before I knew what it was, I pulled it from a flower bed and got headaches (thought it was from the sun). Even my neighbor thought it was a wild carrot, so I crushed a leaf for her, just a small one, so she could smell the bitterness. Not carrot like at all. But one thing I have learned is, it is important not to get it on your skin - it can soak through.

Maybe it could be fools parsley? Has kind of similar flowers, but is known to smell bitter.
@BlackSeranna

@@Notanothercrayon definitely hemlock what I had in the garden. I went online to see the identifying characteristics and it matched up. Edit: I just looked up fool’s parsley, and it looks similar but it isn’t the hemlock I have dealt with. Hemlock has some purple marks on its stem and it’s leaves are a little wider. I can see why this stuff is called fool’s parsley, though. It looks very similar!

That's hilarious the two don't even look close try water hemlock and queen annes lace also known as wild carrot seed. ..which also produce actual wild carrots. I'm not too sure you know what you're talking about. I eat the wild carrots out of my yard all the time.

You'd be surprised how many people get them wrong. You're right - the water hemlock and Queen Anne's Lace look a lot alike. One of the reasons at least one version of the military survival manuals say to avoid wild carrots and lookalikes.
