This story really is a tragedy that this guy had his life ruined by technology solely because he hated technology, criticized people for living in a fantasy world, only to lose/give up his body to a fantasy that was much easier to live in than the real world

I don't think that he willingly decided to live in the fantasy world though. Based on how Dead meat described the event, it sounded like he broke his mind in his attempt to wrestle control of his body away from STEM, and STEM was then able to lock him away in a fantasy world as a result. It is tragic though.

6:55 just realized that while Grey is testing out his motor functions in his hands, he's actually using the ASL sign for "death" or "die", while looking at Eron. Idk if it was intentional or not, but it's a pretty cool foreshadowing of the rest of the movie.

@@BlueBamboo9 i actually had to learn some basic sign language to communicate with my sister before we got her an ipad with communication apps on it, it's pretty fun to learn and "speak" sentences with it. her disability is a rare one called Phelan McDermid Syndrome btw if you were wondering

Japanese and Spanish are really nice sounding languages. but yeah sign language is a little hard to get used to but the signs are easy and simple and it is fun to learn how to say messages with your hands. and yeah it is great that she has multiple ways to communicate now. thank you for the support i really appreciate it! be good people ♥

i will NEVER get over the actors face while his character is under STEMs control. The body is fluid and deadly yet the face is completely distressed. The talent to seperate body parts like that is just amazing.

Not to be THAT guy (Ur not that guy pal, ur not that guy) but you don't put "more" in front of "darker" when you said "more darker". "Stem's voice becomes darker and deeper" works /⁵ down error. It's like saying more better or more smarter. You just say better or smarter. The "er" at the end of the adjective takes the place of a "more" that you'd put before it. But even more smart doesn't really work, as the "er" (smarter/better) is the grammatically correct and more efficient way of writing out that information. Obviously words without an "er" need "more" in front to signify extra of the adjective. Anyways, great comment, I'm just a grammar dick.

The description of how the actor prepped for their role is very similar to how the international C-19 lock downs / quarantines impacted most of us...where we didn't see people and mostly communicated online (if we were lucky enough to be able to work from home). So... The joke from James that the prep for the role "must be nice" has aged like (I would say milk rather than wine) because of that. James was being sarcastic. Love from a KZfaq stranger in the UK. 4:06 fun fact the actress who plays asha is Melanie Vallejo. Who in 2006 played Maddison in power rangers mystic force so when James says that the car is being taken over like some kind of mystic force, he could be referencing her previous works

You sweet summer child. I live in Downtown Hicksville, populated by people I wouldn't light on fire for the chance to piss them out. I have friends around the world I've been communicating exclusively through text with for almost a decade. Really, the only drawback of quarantine for me is that I can't go to 24 hour stores at night to get real food and instead have to pick up my groceries from the local gas station.

Having your body being kinda forcefully taken over by something or someone is a terrifying concept. It’s scary to imagine completely losing control of your body for a while because something or someone else is in control, and it’s difficult to break free from that control…

You see, to Detective Cortez, to her it probably looks like Grey Trace developed Dissociative Identity Disorder because she didn't know he had Stem implanted. And even further when Stem tells Cortez that Grey is in a better place, in his mind, it probably looks even more like Grey has just gone off his rocker to her.

I absolutely love the future tech they create for the film. It never feels super beyond reality. Except maybe the guy sneezing out the little nano droids. I'm talking more like the auto house, cars, the table messages. It's all integrated really well.

21:47 Here’s what I think happened in this scene: Gray died. That’s it. He went to an afterlife where his late wife would be there to reunite with him. That way, STEM could now gain control of his lifeless husk.

Ironic how Grey ended up being what he hated. A person living in a virtual reality to escape real life while a computer did everything else for him. I would like a sequel were Grey snaps out of his mind prison but overcomes Stem only to realize there are other companies like Stem that took over other disabled people & now Grey has to stop them. Call it Upgrade: Viral.

The first fight scene reminds me of venom. Character has to control over their body, look shit scared of whats happening around them and are absolutely beating ass! Upgrade gave it a more convincing take with the camera movement, but both scenes where great

Small detail, but when listening with headphones, STEM’s voice sounds like it’s coming from the back of your neck. It’s not quite binaural recording like with something like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, but it’s moved just enough so that it’s noticeable, more easily putting us in Gray’s headspace.
