Boring video, didn't work out how i wanted it to AT ALL BUT.... It's a day going backwards with my new trailer. I try my best to talk through what i am doing.... In no way shape or form am i any good at reversing but i wanted to try and make mistakes on camera so that other new drivers could see what was going on what was going wrong etc etc.

Mate I’m at a similar position to you, I got my class 1 a little while ago but I work for a bodyshop so I’ll do a lot of rigids then suddenly 2 or 3 weeks later I’m on an artic. So I don’t have it regular enough I think! My frustration is literally what you described, going so far and trying to win a losing battle by chasing the trailer round when I’m in an L shape. I couldn’t get it to click in my mind but I think you’ve pushed me to understand better with what you said! I completely get the bit where you said about recognising where it’s about to go wrong, I’m there too. Thanks so much man, subscribed.

I always go a little further forward from what im going to be reversing round than I really need, helps give you more time to make sure your getting as close to the corner as you can be. As soon as you get a feel for where the trailer pivots around stuff as your pushing it you have pretty much nailed it. No shame in pulling forward a bit to correct it if its going tits up. I was trying to fix stuff later in the reverse for ages when I passed and it was biting me in the ass lol

Excellent video. Really great for new pass drivers. I passed 3 years ago , first day on the job I was given a 16’3 high trailer and a map , told to follow it and I’d be fine. Little did I know I had to go through a 16ft tunnel and reverse the trailer off a high street blind side into an alleyway. Safe to say I sweated more than my body weight. My advice to new passes would be to tell your transport team you are new, tell them you’re nervous and that you want to start off with something easy. You’ll quickly learn who are the sly arses who want a bad job doing or who are genuinely looking out for you and your safety. Looking back I’ve come so far in reversing and overall handling of class 1s. Easy to forget people are new and how daunting it was when you first get out there. Great content!

Tip skills, I’m about to start my training.. my dad used to run to Austria weekly and I was lucky to go on a few trips , many a time I watched him reversing- cab going one way then the other 180 degrees sitting there thinking where the hell is he going lol then only to finish 2 inches off the loading bay - skills . Not many can do what your doing so pat on the back from me. Respect. I was also with him once when we was reversing in Germany, some bloke was shouting, waving, screaming at my dad where to go !! I have never seen the lorry stop and rock so hard as my dad flew out lol bloke thought my dad was only small as all you can see is his head lol he’s 20 stone lol bloke went white ... let’s just say he waved my dad in a bit quieter after that . I just sat there looking out the window lol always reminds me of the JCB song

First things first, fair play to you. No heirs, no graces, no bullshit. That’s top drawer and especially given it’s benefit to new drivers ect. We all make the same mistakes, every new driver will make the same ones after. It’s natural, you’re coming on a treat in fairness for 3 weeks in lad, good effort that. Best advice I can give is nice little movements on the wheel and then watch the trailer react. If you look at your trailer axles, that’s exactly the line your trailer is taking and it’s a bit easier than trying to judge the distance of the back ect.. Services and stuff can seem daunting but same stuff still applies, don’t rush it, get out and have a look if you’re not sure how close you are or shunt it. Better to shunt it than look a nob wiping out a unit. Keep up the good work mate 🤙🏻

Mate, your reasons behind the videos are admiral to say the least, you are, well.... were struggling with reversing, but yet you are still thinking about helping other people. Once more I tip my hat to you! The more I watch your videos, the more I like you as a person. The only criticism I have is that you are too hard on yourself sometimes, when you get it bang on, you seemed surprised by what you have done! Don’t be! You are clearly more than capable of doing it, the only thing you are missing is the repetitive experience of doing it over and over and over. Your ability to drive and reverse that wagon isn’t in doubt, every driver needs miles and miles and miles under their belt to be able to do it without thinking. I don’t have a class 1, but I drove coaches for 14 years, and I remember at the start, shitting myself about reversing 40ft that didn’t bend, into all sorts of places. 40ft long motor up a narrow driveway to fancy country house hotels, taking it inside football stadiums onto boats and all sorts of stuff (no reverse cameras back then either) people standing watching, passengers inside the bus watching your every move and would be thinking ‘wtf are you doing with that bus mate, that ain’t gonna fit up there’ 🤣 After a couple of months I was throwing it about like a Tesco bag blowing about in the wind! You are more than capable mate, I can spot a ‘driver’ and I can spot someone who just ain’t gonna cut it! You’ve got it in the bag, You’ll look back on these vids this time next year and laugh at how hard you are on yourself! 😃 look forward to your next video. Drive safe, drives 👍🏼

Thanks, made it a bit more clear. Just done my 1st week by myself and on a 2nd day they've sent me to Croydon where I had to do reversing 90 deegres angle blind spot on a busy road. Took me 10min before I managed to get in and I hold up the traffic which was very stressful just by itself. That put me down a lot and I lost any tiny bits of confidence I had.

Hi ready my name is daniel and I am a class 1 driver the only tips I can give is reverse slow. 2 remember when u put 1 turn on the wheel 1 way u have to turn it once back just to get your wheels straight. 3 also I have noticed on Cfs and iveco if u can lift your middle axle u then do it as it makes reversing them easier. When I am backing in a bay if I wanted bay 10 I would aim for bay 11 because when u lock it round your unit will turn on the spot I also find it easier that way

Another tip for you mate.. when your fully loaded and reversing drop all your air on the drive axels. It’s normally the button next to the lift axel button looks abit like this..... o-o its also good for steep hills when you can’t get grip

Simple when you got 2 acres of land to use! Try it in a yard that only uas 3/4 the length of the waggon to maneuver and the bay spaces aren't wide enough to open the cab doors all the way, when you've got open curtains obscuring your view.... That's Pallet Force at Burton-on-trent... A nightmare for newby! Under pressure with 50 parked up guys watching and 10 or 12 waiting to pass you! Go and do some store deliveries in London, that will get the pulse racing, also get you up to speed VERY quick. EVERYBODY struggles at first, small movements no more than a quarter of a turn and go slowly. Everyday is a school day, still get somedays when I make a complete pigs ear of it, even after 30 years. As you approach the area, crank hard right, then hard left, this will then position the trailer ready to go into the said area/bay. 👍

The only explanation that works is take it easy and your time, and don't steer too much if you go straight back. some things you just have to do, that you can't explain. the cones are a good idea, what you can do for yourself, put a long stick in some cones and consider it as a wall. due to the height of the trailer it will never hit a cone (yes you can drive a cone flat) but if you insert a stick in a cone you will immediately see that you hit an imaginary wall. you are doing fine, and practice makes perfect 👍👍👍

Your getting the hang of it man, you'll get it ;) I'm not and HGV driver (yet) but drive Agricultural machinery which can be as big! Can be similar but yet different I know.. You seem to be answering your own questions for advise really, smaller steering movements and sooner are better, also while still moving rather than stopping to correct steering and starting again will help.. Always take a shunt if you need too, once it goes wrong (which it will) 10 times easier to shunt and correct rather that getting into a pickle trying to chase and correct it! Another thing, setting yourself up for a reverse is half the battle, getting your vehicle lined up as much as you can while going forward will reduce the manoeuvring in reverse needed.. Bottom line advise I have for anyone new to reversing a trailer in general is, Don't over think it! Overthinking will put you into a pickle more than anything!! Once you master the one trailer, want to try your hand at reversing two behind each other? ;) Sorts the men from the boys! Lol..

Great video mate!!! Passed class 2 in December. Failed class 1 twice. 1st time absolute cockhead with the recoupling, my reversing was great with no shunts and only 4 driver faults out on the road. 2nd time had to use a new vehicle and trailer, no practice before test, so it phased me. Failed on reverse took two shunts and still managed to cock it up. The drive was great with only 3 driver faults. So now retest in April. Keep up with the videos and stay safe.

Gareth ....I'll give a little bit of advice if I may ?;....and its got nothing to do with the reversing .That will come mate ..Look after your boss coz he's a decent fella it seems ....When you've mastered the driving , don't ( if possible ) walk away from him , like so many seem to do ....Keep the respect that people have for you ...I am still in contact with my first ' guvnor ' and that was 32 years ago ....Try not to jump ship every time you have a bad day ...And don't let KZfaq take over everything .....Keep away from the road legends ! and enjoy yourself ....Have a good weekend mate

Mate your doing alright trust me. May sound strange but sometimes its harder to reverse when you have all the space in the world then it is when the space is smaller. Ive pulled off some real tricky reverses with nobody near to see it & then messed up a reverse with acres of space & loads of people to witness the fuck up!!!!! As long as you point your trailer in the direction you need to go you are half way there. Small corrections on the steering wheel. Just remember ( G.O.A.L ) GET OUT AND LOOK if at any time you are unsure. Take as many shunts as you need & as long as you get where you need to be & dont hit anything its all good. Anyone who takes the piss out of your reversing is a tosser. You are doing amazing just keep going & soon the nerves will go & you will wonder why you was ever worried. Thanks for sharing i would never of filmed my reversing when i first started so hats off to you.

Fantastic vid thank's for posting. When I first started on more than 1 occasion I wanted the ground to open up when I fucked it up. My first reverse was at home bargains in Liverpool. I was shitting my self & there was an audience of other drivers. My turn came & 2 bays next to each other became available, missed the 1 I was aiming for but ended up with a half decent set up for the other bay. it was a short-lived reprieve.

On my first day yesterday, they had me backing a 16ft double decker refrigerator onto bays with those banana things at the bottom. I just couldn't do it. Had the shunters do it. I even struggled in service station bay. I think it was nerves and fear of damaging the expensive trailer. Ive had sum reversing practice on a refresher onto bays without the banana things, and service station bays, but usually away from other vehicles. Im also struggling to fully understand the tacho
