Model Nyle DiMarco explains what it's like for people who are deaf to go to the movies.

Nyle DiMarco explains how deaf people go to the movies. Since it is no longer the norm for movies to display captions, people who are deaf must use an assistive device such as glasses or a device called a CaptiView which sits in a cup holder and displays subtitles.
The problem with these devices however is that they can make the user feel like an outcast. DiMarco says, "The whole experience is annoying, embarrassing. It takes a toll on my deaf identity. It feels like I'm being robbed of my dignity. And it's very destructive to my own identity."
DiMarco calls for movies to display open captions more frequently, saying, "Open captions are not for the 466 million deaf people alone, they're beneficial for people who have ADHD, people who are autistic, people who have learning disabilities, and even people who want to learn a new language."

That is really interesting to know Nyle. And I am glad you are stepping up to be a spokesman for the Deaf Community. I am now dealing with Fluctuating Hearing Loss and I think the mass public just takes hearing for granted. It sometimes is a challenge and I also have cut back going to Movie Theaters. I just catch the movie at home when available and use CC as an aide. Thanks for your input.

Everyone saying catering to the majority is more important. Your not seeing how privileged you really are. Your ability to hear gives you and advantage to enjoy everything in a theater. The deaf community (disabled community really) has been told there not important because there's so little of us. Open captions aren't actually going to take away from your movie experience once you start watching you can ignore them because guess what you can hear them movie: so they fade away. But a deaf person they can't enjoy a movie with the box glasses it's too hard to see the screen and read the captions. Why can't you stop and say ok the captions maybe annoying to me, but there the only ways a whole community can enjoy the same experience. Im not deaf but I am learning sign language because I run into deaf people in my travels and I want to be able to communicate with everyone!

Just because open captions don’t bother YOU doesn’t mean that others aren’t bothered by them. Many people are distracted by the captions, they add light/brilliance in otherwise dark scenes, etc. They have devices for the deaf and hard of hearing. Just because you don’t want to use them doesn’t mean you get to dictate what the majority of the world have to experience. The world isn’t fair. It’s not fair that you’re deaf, but that’s the card life handed you. Be glad that there’s technology available to help you while also not inconveniencing others. There will come a time when liberals will want all people to handicap themselves to make the world more equal LOL

I have even read that film distributors dub foreign movies into American markets because their research showed that Americans don't like to read the subtitles. I personally enjoy the subtitle experience in foreign films because I like to hear the sound of the speaker's passion in their voice. For those who are not deaf, the captions can also enhance the viewing experience because you can be sure of what the characters really say. So, it is great to know that captions help those deaf movie lovers to appreciate cinema as well.

I feel like it’s my job as somebody who is only mildly disabled to mention to others ‘Hey this wheelchair ramp is blocked’ or ‘this setup is really difficult to use as a blind person’ since I feel like it’s so hard for a disabled person to get their voices heard. I wanna learn asl so I can be an interpreter everywhere I go if need be. Also as a hearing person I prefer captions on everything too. It irritates me when others don’t want them on when they help me understand the movie better.

It saddens me that people complain about captions. I'm a hearing woman and I use captions for everything I watch at home. I think they add to the experience and would welcome them at the movie theater. They're much less a distraction than people looking at their phones during a movie. We need to do better for the deaf community and give them better options.

I’d love all movies to have captions. I can’t hear out of one ear, and between loud people, loud food, lower movie volumes, and sometimes not the best audio systems, it’s hard for me to understand what actors say. I used to go to 12-15 movies a year at the theater. I haven’t gone to many at all, lately, because I want to be sure I can hear them. At home, every single tv show I watch is close captioned. Perhaps, with all the foreign movies with subtitles on Netflix and other streaming services, subtitles will become more the norm in theaters.

C. J. OnGee deaf people are SUCH a minority, that even if there were closed captions, maybe not even one person would be deaf. And to be honest, closed captions really are pesky. I mean, at least they have a solution to the problem, but even that can’t satisfy them. It’s not because "the money grubbing theatre owners are unkind", it’s because they need to cater to the majority, they need to make the majority happy, it’s kind of unreasonable for only ONE person to be catered to. It’s just logic, really.
