Wow. I wasn't expecting this at all.
I've been to Deakin University's main Burwood campus in suburban Melbourne many times. Over the years I've admired how it's developed with excellent new facilities to compliment the university's march up the global rankings.
But when I sat down with four current Deakin students at Deakin's on-campus residential colleges, I didn't quite expect it to unfold like it did. And I think you'll find this conversation incredibly valuable!
From why they chose Deakin, to their backstories and experiences on campus, we cover wide ground. I feel confident saying that anyone who's planning on studying at Deakin will get find something interesting in this conversation - some of the "secret tips" will genuinely surprise you!
A huge thanks to the great gang of students who agreed to chat with me in this convo: Adyant Modi, Vaibhav Kashyap, Tom Browell and Caitlyn Wright. What legends.
I love your questions - so don't be afraid to ask me anything down below and I'll get back to you!

As an incoming international student coming in February 2024, this video, students and the series on Deakin really, really eased my anxiety and worries about the academics, accommodation and just Deakin and Melbourne in general. I was really feeling bad about having my parents use their finances for my school fees and accommodation but what was said in this video about money made me perked up a little, and that the money can be paid back to my parents in the near future, and I can also have some pocket money to myself by finding part-time jobs in or outside campus. Can't wait to stay in MC building come February 2024, and kickstart my Deakin journey! Cheers, everyone

SUPER happy to read this 😁😁😁 I was really impressed by the res. They’ve made a huge effort to create a positive community, and it looks to me like they’re succeeding. Good luck with your journey! Say g’day if you ever see me on campus 👍

Hi Rob! I'm an international student thinking about doing a semester abroad in Australia. I'm studying medicine. My university gives me the option of studying at LaTrobe University, Deakin University, James Cook University or Griffith University, but I'm not sure which one to choose. I'm a city girl, so I think JCU is definitely not for me. I'm looking for a great student life with a vibrant campus, also making new friends, don't care if most of them are locals cause I love Australian culture and I want to experience it and get to know it. I also love going to the beach and I'm planning on doing road trips all over Australia, so definitely looking for that Australian beachy vibe. Pretty sure, I'll be living off campus so it's important that it isn't too difficult for me to get to campus. Nevertheless, academics are as important to me as the rest. I live in the tropics so I wouldn't mind switching the weather for good btw hahaha. I would really appreciate your recommendation and why? Thank you so much! The job you are doing is amazing and very informative keep it going!

Hey man, thanks for this video! I’m a student studying in Amsterdam and Im going abroad to Australia in august this year for 6 months. However I have some questions about some unis that I can’t really find well online. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and they were realle helpful so I figured why not just ask you! :) -for brisbane, the catholic university. Is there really a difference between that uni and other uni’s because it is Catholic? Like do other types of people attend the uni than other unis and are there any party’s etc at the uni? -for the macquire uni which you also studied at: It seems like an amazing uni but I’ve read that it takes 55 minutes by bus to get to sidney. Is that not too far to live in sidney? And if i were to live on campus at macquire, I think you would not get to sidney that much because it is too far? Also in terms of going to clubs how would you do that with such a long travel time. I dont know how much of a problem the travel time is, and definitely in terms of housing, would it be possible to live in sidney? Or best to live inbetween or so? Sorry for the long questions, I just really wanna make the right decision, but your videos helped me a lot already! Thanks :) ❤️

Hi mate, this is a good question. ACU is "catholic" in values, but you don't have to be catholic to study there. If student life were slower there, it would be more likely because it's a smaller university than because it's catholic. Yes, you'll find a higher % of theology students there than elsewhere, but ACU also performs very well in some disciplines. I'm not sure about how lively the Brisbane campus is tbh Back in my day, MQ had one of the most dynamic inbound study abroad programs in the country and the campus is truly lovely. The city does take awhile to reach but bus or train, but it depends what you're hoping for from the whole experience. Tbh, being in an on-campus res at MQ is where a lot of the fun happens - but if you're hoping to be right in the heart of the CBD then MQ isn't the place to be (UTS would be the choice in Sydney, QUT in Brisbane or RMIT in Melbourne). If your choice is between MQ and ACU Brisbane, my personal pick would be MQ, living on campus (if possible). I LOVE Brisbane as a city, but a study abroad experience is first and foremost about the people you meet at uni. My bias is that I'm more of an outdoors person than an inner-city person, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

@@ChoosingYourUni hey man, thank you so much for the long and specific answer. You were right about acu probably not being as lively and MQ being really fun on campus but then far from the city, so I actually went with UWA (totally different choice, I know) and I decided to live on campus there!! I know you think Perth is great and I think I’ll really enjoy the city too! Weather and people seen really great and if you live on campus there will be enough fun and exciting stuff to do!! Now I’m just hoping to get selected!! Thanks again for taking such a long time to answer, that means a lot! :) Will be sure to keep checking your newer videos out!

I am not from australia and I am looking to go to gold coast to take on a master's degree in data science, i am currently considering the southern cross university for the price they offer. but i really want the opinion of someone on how does people view and value a diploma from that university. For example, if i go to a job interview and the recruiter see a diploma from them, will it be a good sign in their opinion or they would consider it a kind of "red flag"?

Thanks for your question. No university in Australia will raise a red flag with employers. The overall level of education in Australia is very high. That being said Southern Cross University is one of the smaller and less known universities so it really depends where you end up looking for work. Some employers might not be familiar with it, but that doesn’t mean that they will question the quality of your education and skills.

Won’t be able to do that as it’s too niche but the AI program is a good one. For that id also consider UTS, Monash and UNSW.
