Dealer causes Check engine, Trac off, and 4wd light errors on RAV4 after shocks replaced.

after taking a 2012 RAV4 into the Toyota dealership to have them replace worn rear shock absorbers, the car then has traction control lights, four-wheel drive lights and check engine lights on. This was the fault of the dealer who was messing with other parts of the car when they were only supposed to be doing the shocks. I'll show you what caused it and how to fix it and diagnose it.

Thank you so much for this video. The issue I had was similar but helped me so much and brought peace to my mind. I took my car to a local shop for a regular oil change. After driving ~1M the 4WD and the Electronic Stability Program lights turned on. I watched your video open the hood and saw that the vacuum hose was not connected to the engine. I can’t say thank you enough. The shop is closed Saturdays so you have no idea how relieved I am.

So glad it helped....I don't know why these places keep undoing that hose to replace a filter...or in my case should t have even been under the hood. Thanks for the comment

I reset the 4WD light and the vehicle from being stuck in 4WD, by disconnecting the battery cable at night, and let the ECU (computer) reset, and hook the cable back up the next morning and it worked to shut off the lights and stuck 4WD (which is only supposed to engage up to 25MPH when it senses slippage)

Thank you and this time it was me who caused this issue while changing engine air filter 😂. I snapped it back in but codes are still there.

The codes will clear in about of week depending on how much driving you do....if you can't wait just pull the negative cable of the battery for a minute. You'll lose your radio resets if you go the quick battery route and will have to redo them

Literally saw this video today cause same lights went on after having my alternator replaced. Opened the hood and the same exact hose was popped off on my 2012!!!! I popped it back in reset the codes with the battery cables and light has not come back on!!!

@@TheSteelheadStation yeah bro you’re a life saver I took it in to a trusted mechanic and when we got it back the lights came on before leaving their shop. I told them they cleared it and blamed it on the alternator they just replaced so I believed them. Drove it home about 30 miles. No light. I go to work and wife sends me a picture as soon as she starts again an all 3 were back on. I get home take it to AutoZone they scan it and say it’s maf sensor.( no biggie) I’ll clean it the morning. I’m lying in bed and think to myself. Let me search up the lights on KZfaq. Found this video. The next morning I go out to the car pop the hood and the exact same fucking hose. You are a lifesaver. We paid 9 grand for a 2012 rav4 with 120,000 miles I was thinking I got scammed because he let it go for the lower end of kbb in my area. Turns out it’s a beautiful ride that I now want to steal from my wife lol

Thanks for posting this video. Saved lots of time and money. I had the exact same issue. The hardest part was simply disconnecting the battery to reset the lights. 4:47

They will eventually go back off if your air filter hose is hooked back up and your gas cap is one tight...most likely things that cause it ...will take about a week though...if you don't mind reprogramming your radio. Unhooking the battery for about 5 minutes will reset it as well instantly. Thanks for watching

😢 I have a Rav...all lights on minus one...But I pulled in the driveway, turned off the car, took out the key and the car was still running! Sooooo..needless to say I can't even tell you the nightmare I'm in

That sounds like a computer issue or ignition.. most ravs are drive by wire...which means the computer is doing all the work, the pedals don't actually control anything except for telling the computer what to do...like a video game controller...unlike old school cars where the gas pedal was actually moving the throttle

This forum seems to point to ignition switch or alternator problem. Alternator would explain why all the lights came on...if so that's not a real expensive fix. www.rav4world.com/threads/engine-keeps-running-when-key-is-turned-off-solved.73411/

How did you get it cleared. Same thing. The hose from the air intake was off. It’s back on now but the light are all there.

It took a couple of days of driving for the computer to realize there was nothing wrong and it went off on its own. If you u can't stand it , you can un hook the battery for a minute and it should clear the light.

Maybe...if they were trying to pad the bill..but likely just incompetence because they don't hire real mechanics anymore....they just call them certified"technicians" ie they didn't go to mechanic training school

Exactly.. Toyota does alot right but tying the gas cap loose warning to the 4wd light is insane

Check the engine and look for the hose from the air intake being off. Put it back on and it will go off in about a week...or unhook the battery for five minutes. Check the gas app is tight ...it can down the same thing

Did you look for any hoses that have come off? If so and everything is good...you can disconnect the battery for awhile and it should reset...it took mine about a week on its own just driving

You should turn that dealership into Toyota, Toyota isn't like Ford, GM or Dodge. Toyota will do a comprehensive background check on that dealership and shut them down if there is enough complaints. I believe it takes like 10 complaints and who knows you could be the 10th complaint. Don't waste your time with the inhouse manager, contact Toyota directly, the Manager for 1 will protect his work force and two the manager is the one telling his mechanics to do things like this most likely. Another thing that will cause those lights to come on is to much corrosion on the Positive battery terminal.

Same exact thing happened to me at Pepboys today. Left the hose unplugged and all 3 lights lit up

It's insane ...you don't have to detach it at all to change the filter. I don't know why these places keep doing this...other to try and pad the bill by claiming it's something else wrong and more work needs done
