I have been out of the ATV game for about 2 decades so my guess would be $1,000-$1,500.00. Then again I may be way off. I bought my '87 Honda Fourtrax 250 back in 1988 at a dealership for $1,500.00. I miss my Fourtrax. Great video as always!

Good vid. Being an old mechanic, I actually worked on those at a dealership. That engine came from the atc185 with point ignition which was made a little larger to the 200cc with CDI. These were very good engines. I kind of chuckled when you said that there was zero ohms on the plug cap. I think the ohm meter was "misread", these caps had a 5K ohms reading which was extremely common to all recreation vehicles in the 80's. Governments required this due to radio interference. First place to start with no spark. If the dealership couldn't figure it out. Hmmm. Look at the point that screws into the end of the plug wire it may not be there eroded off.

That's the cleanest old Honda I've seen in awhile. Nice find! Have a DRZ400 that lost spark & couldn't find it. Sent it to my sled mechanic & he fixed it in 2 hours. Sparking through a new plug boot to the gas tank.. sometimes it's the simple stuff.

My grandparents used to have these Honda Fourtrax for getting around the property and forging the local creek to visit neighbors. These are super easy to learn and fun for leisurely ride. They’re also unusually good at handling steep angles on single-track.

My first and only ATV was a honda 86 trx 250 just like that one. My tool kit was attached to under seat but also had container beside trunk space. I bought the same back tires for mine. Also the headlight detached so you could use it as a spot light which I thought was pretty cool. Paid 1750$ for it back around 1999 and sold it to one of my best friends in high school for 850$ in 2002. I really enjoyed the one I had.

Have a late 80s fourtrax 250. Very similar but mine has a kick start instead of pull. Paid $400 for it running with a plow and winch. Put a set of 6ply tires on it and painted the wheels and plow black. Looks nicer than most new machines. These Hondas simply do not quit.

Easy fix replacing the boot! The cdi box is the usual culprit on these older machines… personally I would repair the tank & leave the external tank on it also, a little extra gas storage is always a good thing 👍🏻👍🏻

Most Honda dealers aren't certified to work on anything older than 20 yrs. They won't admit it but it's true. Reason being, if they break something they can't replace they have to replace the bike. Nice find, around here that's worth about $1500 in good condition.

It's not that they aren't certified, it's that usually the machine isn't worth the cost of repairs and as you say if you can't get parts it becomes and issue. a lot of times the customer says to go ahead and fix it but when it comes time to pay the bill they disappear.

Its not on their flat rate system in the computer. They cant even estimate repair cost. They just cant make any money on them. Cant hardly get a good tech to work on the new stuff. I own and operate my own shop and my customers have some nightmare dealership stories.

That's definitely one of the nicer 80s Hondas. Decent size bore for the motor, an actually usable low gear for pulling/hauling, and it has reverse and an electric starter on top of it! Unless something newer comes along, I'd totally recommend holding onto this one. Since its in such good shape and runs so well, it definitely deserves a replacement tank. Even if a used one runs for $200-$400, it would totally be worth it to have a gas tank that's not obstructing the headlight.
@TheRealChuckNorris
@TheRealChuckNorris Жыл бұрын
Even if something newer comes along you keep it. These things are tanks. I have several atvs that are decades newer than this atv and all of them have had something expensive make them useless for months on end. My 84 trx200 and 86 trx250 have NEVER broken down. The most I've had to do to them in the 15 plus years of owning them is oil changes and batteries. Even honda doesn't make their atvs this bullet proof anymore.

I've been in the glass business for 50 years and I noticed that all your four wheelers have a lot of plastic and most of the time it scratched up you can polish that plastic out like brand new using plastic polish like you would use on your headlight lenses or standard automobile polish . Give it a try I'm sure you'll like it I've done it many times and also if you have any clear windshields or anything like that the Polish will polish it clear as glass

Ive seen boot failure or wire regression inside the line so many times on motorcycles, its now one of the very first things i check as corrosion inside the boot (on the spring or ceramic pill) or a dry rotted boot, or the wire no longer making it near where it needs to can cause a whole host of issues, and can be the simplest to fix -- trim back the wire -- clean out the boot and fire er up

I had one almost exactly like that, but it was a 250. It was a 1985 TRX-250. My Dad bought it new in '85 and he gave it to me in '03. We used it for utility use all those years. When I sold it two years ago, it was still in nearly new condition, better than the one you have there. I advertised it on facebook and it sold in three days, for $1500. The guy was not used to old four wheelers, so I had to show him how to shift gears and find reverse. The only parts ever replaced were tires, a new air filter, and a new front brake master cylinder kit. Otherwise, it was always completely reliable. I would have kept it, but I had no more use for it and it was taking up space in my garage.

Dude I'll be stoked if you get some property! That will take the videos to another level! You for one could keep almost all of them then, just in a lean-2 type garage lol For real like you said though you could use it to haul some stuff. Be cool to see you chop a tree down while using your ATV and trailer to get to the fallen OAK lol Then chop it up and haul the loads away over some rough terrain that only the old Honda could just go right over to the pile your storing up for winter for your wood burner heat. You could make some quad videos with some country life and quad use in them then like trails riding, hauling, working, grading driveways and other things, hunting and so many more on channel activities with your everyday new four wheeler lol Just a late night thought from me, love your channel its dang near all I watch anymore lol

Funky spark/no spark issues with this era Honda is usually the little electronic ignition module - it gets erratic & will work then not work, etc etc. Often they will start cold, then conk when they warm up - as broken connections inside the ECM open up. They're cheap & worth replacing as a matter of course. Great little machines.

I'm sorry but I had to chuckle when I seen your post, I have a 1984 TRX 200 I use mostly in the winter every day to haul wood to my boiler. The CD box did similar, above 50°f it would work just fine, 30°f to 50°f was a no go unless you heated it up, 30°f down to minus 25°f it would work fine again. I do like the idea of that bigger battery in the back, those motorcycle batteries don't care much to work below minus 10°f. It has enough to roll it over 2-3 revolutions with the choke on and then you need to use the rewind to fire it up, the chock cable froze up years ago. Paid $1000 for it in 2005 from a dealer and has served me well for being a 2 wheel drive

That's in pretty nice shape - all things considered. Does it have OEM shocks on the front? I'm trying to find some aftermarket ones for my TRX200 - tough to find cross reference numbers.

Look in side the tank if it has not been done I do believe you can buy a product that you pour into the tank and roll it all around and seal it from the inside might be an option to try

Damn, I've been turning wrenches for over 30 years and never saw a bad spark plug boot. Crazy. But nice job getting it running.....shame the gas tank was so trashed.

I've personally seen quite a few. Hell, I just saw one on KZfaq an hour or so ago. The guts came out of it and were stuck on the sparkplug. I wouldn't say it's super common, but not extremely rare.
