Dealing With Blade Kerf Milling Lumber w Woodmizer LT15 Sawmill

This is how I deal with the blade kerf on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. Or maybe said more accurately, how I justify the way I deal with the kerf. The blade kerf is the wood the blade removes as sawdust. The blades I use create a curve about 1/8 inch thick. If something isn’t done to account for the kerf, we will end up with lumber that is thinner than what we may want. In this video I am milling some Douglas fir logs into lumber. Some of which I plan on using to build a small off grid cabin. I also attempt to answer other questions I have been getting. Why I mill full dimension lumber instead of common dimensional lumber. What I do with the lumber after I mill it. Do I sticker plain and process it more?

All my angst just went away! I’ve been so fixated on how thick to cut my lumber. I’ll just cut fulldimension, and deal with it! Thanks for that! Also looking for how to slab short(24”) like firewood length boards for a friend who makes custom signs. How about a vid on that!? Thanks John

I have never milled pieces that short. I am sure there is some kind of jig you could build to clamp short pieces in. You could check out MSD Making Saw Dust. He has done some videos securing pieces in to cut cookies. You might be able to get some ideas from him.

Building with green rough sawn lumber has its challenges...lots more measuring due to variable thickness and widths. And then allowing for shrinkage in service (or just compromising). I use rough sawn for pole barns and farm/ranch structures. Fortunately most of what I mill is pretty dry already, but I lose a lot working around the radial splits. The bug holes and other defects however can add character to furniture and go well with my B grade joinery!

It only seems like the cost of things goes up but what is really happening is the value of the money being used to buy those things goes down so you need more of it to buy the same quantity. But on topic, kerf really doesn't exist when you make your first cuts to the outside of a log as that is all unusable anyway. I do like your presentation.

I used to mill that way with my LT 35 and it had a simple set works on it . I now have an LT 50 and it has acu set , once programed it compensates for the kerf . You are right though , once stickered it shrinks fast .

The magnetic scale that came with our LT15 came folded in half which made it unusable as the kink never flattened out.

It did come with one. I tried using it one time and didn’t stick with it. I don’t remember why though. Maybe I need to pull it out again and give it another shot. If anything, just to remember why I quit using it.

Kiln drying kills those bugs so you don't have to discard any usable boards. I built a solar kiln for about $200 for drying firewood. I can sell dry firewood a week after it goes in there.

Since I have more wood than I know what to do with, I don’t even want the boards with bug holes. I would rather cut them into firewood. That is very impressive if you can get firewood dry that fast with a solar kiln. 👍

@@WilsonForestLands Dry firewood in a week only happens with ideal conditions. If I use a dehumidifier along with solar I can get the time down to 4-5 days but I'm too cheap to pay for the electricity to run it. I'm not that desparate for dry firewood. In the short days of winter it takes up to 20 days to get the moisture content below 15%. Outside temperature doesn't matter as long as the sun is bright enough to cast a shadow. Today it's 8°F outside and the temperature in the kiln is 178°

Great video, and it brings up another question I’ve had for a while - after minor kerf loss and drying, what are the average dimensions that you end up with from a board that you cut at 2”x6”?

LOL,Thanks. With all that sawdust (even though it's not hard wood) I would get a small pellet making machine. Cheap heat especially if you want to dry the lumber.

If I didn’t already have way more wood to burn than I know what to do with, I might do something like that. I use the sawdust on the garden. But if anything, that might be something fun to experiment with.

Physics is better than psycics (ie weather forecasters) I always say. Glad you were able to get some milling done. I guess if a person wanted exact measurements on their lumber, they could use a plane after the lumber is sufficently dryed out so they don't have to worry about kerf or shrinkage after planing to the dimensions they need/want. Just my 2 cents. You know, 2 cents actually used to mean a lot more. You could buy a couple pieces of bubble gum at the store. So I guess my 2 cents don't mean much anymore. I do have a question for you this week. I noticed that on the height adjustment chain, most of the time the outside part (chain furthest away from the bed) vibrates, but sometimes the inside does. What factor determines which one vibrates? Thanks for the video!

I think you are right with that for getting exact lumber. It’s more likely worth doing all that for high dollar wood like fine hardwoods. After decades of inflation maybe we need to change it from that’s my 2 cents to 2 dollars. Maybe our opinions would become worth something. I haven’t noticed the inner chain getting slack. I am guessing that happens when the saw head is lowered all the way to the bottom and it is resting on the stop. I will have to pay attention to that and confirm.

Hey Craig. Yeah the bigger a channel gets the crazier the comments get. I don’t have the power feed. I was just looking at the trailer package a while back. I may get one before summer. Just not sure how much milling I will be doing, it hasn’t been a priority lately. Sometimes I forget to clamp the logs that are laying on their flat side. Usually because I am distracted by moving cameras around. 😁 Smaller logs could be a problem but I don’t think this mill has the power to flip most of them. On your big mills that would make me very nervous. 😁

I might some how be to blame for the high price of dimensional lumber, had a major project from 2020 to 2022 building and finishing out a tiny home/cabin. And yes the price has declined especially here in the PNW but oddly everything else has stayed stupid high. In truth part of the blame lays with the minimum wage increases over last couple years, which can be a crazy long debate on its own

What do you do with the outer cutoffs, sawdust and wood with bugs in it?

Most of the outer cutoffs I give to my neighbors for firewood. A few of them I have used myself for firewood. I have sold a few but not many. The ones that have the tree killing bugs still under the bark, I either burn them or take them to the local power plant to burn them so the bugs don’t spread to other trees. The ones with the bugs in the wood aren’t the tree killing bugs so they can be firewood. A lot of the sawdust goes in the garden, and a lot of of it has just been accumulating in that pile by the mill. probably eventually to go on the garden.

After watching that… Holy Moly Im completely lost in the math now. 😂😂😂 Now you got me questioning my mathematics skills. Looks like I better sign up for a nightly math class . Since you didn’t get the OSB and plywood attachments with your mill you probably didn’t get the board stretcher either. Man you sure did buy the mill on a low budget ..😂 See your milling 2x4”s 2x6’s out of saw logs and trying to do all the math, that’s where your messing up. You mill boards out of saw logs . You mill 2x4’s and 2x6’s stuff like the out of limps. That way you can match the big box stores on there creativity on the curves stuff and get the same price. It’s called price match…😂 see your not just selling lumber your selling specialty building material. 😂😂😂 By the way next time you get that deep in depth , please warn me ahead of time 😂😂😂 take care that’s for sharing all that knowledge..
