Dr. Rick and I open the mailbag and answer questions focused on strengthening our relationships. We explore how we can support friends and loved ones who are experiencing depression while also caring for ourselves, managing different levels of capacity within a relationship, maintaining self-worth and trust in the context of body image insecurities, and navigating the often tricky dynamics of a partner’s relationship with their ex. The episode closes with Rick and I sharing how we’ve handled repair in their parent/child relationship, and what we can do to manage anxieties about the future.
Key Topics:
0:00 Introduction
1:30 Establishing boundaries with a loved one who is depressed
16:30 Body image insecurity, and trusting that others love us
31:45 How do I navigate my partner's relationship with their ex?
41:15 I’m nervous that as my child ages they’ll blame me for my bad parenting. What can I do?

Love your work, Forrest and Rick. That was an excellent depression-related question and was very sensitively answered. Being depressed is horrible, but being in a close relationship with someone who's depressed isn't far behind. Gathering as much support as possible is vital, as is open, clear and sensitive communication. 💙💙💙

Hi Forest and Rick, I'm a new subscriber. I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy listening to a father and son discuss deep psychological topics. I came to find however that this relates strongly to the distance I sometimes feel with my own mother, and also felt strongly with my father who has passed. I love the material, I love the honesty, and most of all the focus on truth, varied perspective, and compassion. I'm a therapist myself. Listening to this talk has challenged me immensely. Thank you for focusing on growth. Because that's whats required in order to be well in our minds. It is SUCH hard work but if we can wrap arms of compassion around ourselves and others, we can do it in a way that feels safe. Much love from New Jersey

Forest, you and your dad provide such generous content that is executed with professional excellence with every single episode. I tell everyone I know about your channel and send them links, encouraging them to listen. Both for their own wellness and to increase your exposure to grow your audience. I hope one day you are financially rewarded for all the hours you have dedicated to helping others. Thank you on behalf of all those souls you touch each week, and the souls they touch.

I am close to my family and have a mostly healthy relationship with them at this point in my life. But I see Forrest and his dad, and I feel both sad and in admiration of how healthy, loving, and secure your family appears to me. I see you guys as my parasocial secure attachment models lol! Thanks for the great podcast and keep it up!

Jumping in here at about 54:00 - ish, kids absolutely do things on purpose, with intention, and those action affect parents and other people around them. These kids, however, have limited resources, skills and experience comparatively. My first job as a parent, is to be an unwavering support to myself; to be involved in community and symbolize a desire to grow emotionally and spiritually. Understanding my value and place in the world, having a relationship with a higher Self, makes all relationships easier. It's just a lot of us kids grow into adults that have to learn that by trial and error, often locked in old patterns unwittingly.

Another fantastic episode. I love the thoroughness of the content. And you both model kindness and compassion towards these topics which, at least for me, have been charged with shame, negativity, and fear. Thank you again.

Question... How to actually find the right therapist? Either online or in person. I'm constantly putting off therapy because there's an internal hesitation and worry about finding someone able to help me and who's experienced in delving into deep and complex issues. I'm in the UK, and the landscape is full of counsellors and psychotherapists, but neither are a protected title, and can cover a huge range of skill and experience. Thank you for your work, both of you. Your podcast has been such a valuable thing in my life.

I just wanted to express my deep gratitude for Forrest and Rick for making this content💗 I found the being well podcast a couple of months ago, and it has already helped me navigated some of the most challenging situations in my life. question for the next mailbag episode: how do we find the line between self abandonment and appropriately compromising to keep peace in an attachment relationship?

Outstanding view points from you both! Thank you for continuing to share these, Forrest and Rick. I love pressing play on your videos. It never fails that I’m in for some expanding of the mind! The combination of perspectives are so helpful for those who are currently in “the mess,” or even for those who are looking backwards or forward at their situations. I sincerely appreciate how you both are so careful, thoughtful, and deliberate in your messages. Thank you, always! ❤

Very helpful thank you for the Q &. A. Do you guys have any advice for people that deal with chronic fatigue due to CPTSD and trauma and stressful life events? I have days where I can't get out of bed because I'm physically depleted even though I would like to.
