This is so helpful. I've been going through this as a patient, having been prescribed adderall for the past 15yrs. I'm on a relatively high dose, so the withdrawals have been intense and severe for me. Thank you for talking about this. I appreciate your suggestions.

The shortage forced me to try out Strattera and so far it’s working kind of. 😅.

@@SirAustin I had a friend that successfully found it after calling 9 small family-owned pharmacies in her town and the smaller suburbs around where she lived. I guess they aren't as effected by the big pharma buyer exclusivity agreements that force the chain pharmacies to buy up to something like 90% of their total volume from one distributor?

Can deal with a shortage the no expected date pisses me off. When I ask the pharmacy they should at the very least be provided with a eta from their distributor but nope. They tell me no idea they order it each morning but have no idea if and when it will ship

The pharmacists won’t even tell me what’s in stock. It’s soooooooooo frustrating!

I agree, it can take a lot of work to figure out where you can fill your prescription. I also learned recently that, at least in California, the pharmacist can't just check for "generic Adderall" - they have to search through each manufacturer, so it takes them a long time to see what other pharmacies in their system may have in stock.

@@DrJohnKruse, There are also tons of issues with insurance coverage for generic and brand name substitutions. Also, in at least a few cases, there are marked physiological side-effects from not having ADHD medication including a dramatically increased resting heart rate.

As someone who is on a higher dose of Adderall for over 20 years I can say from experience the withdrawal from Adderall is a nightmare that can last for years (if you've been on it for a long time) because I was forced to stop it for a year and my withdrawal never got better. If I was forced to stay off Adderall I don't believe I'd ever recover. It was unbearable. Therefore, the withdrawal is dependent on how long you've been on it. Stopping Adderall led to the worst type of situation. I don't want to say what happened, but you can imagine. This idea that people not getting their prescriptions is not that big of a problem is NOT TRUE. This is VERY SERIOUS.

I think the increase is conbected to the labor shortage. Work is much more stressful across all industries because of all the vacancies. Thus those of us who got by without medication or sometimes diagnosis now have sought these. We are expected to do the work of 2 people in the 40 hr work week because everyone talked about boomers retiring but did nothing to prepare for it. There are not enough workers coming up behind the boomers.
@DrJohnKruse
@DrJohnKruse Жыл бұрын
Yes, both demand and supply are connected to the labor shortage. ADHD is more problematic for more people because of workplace demands and decreases in structure/support. And Teva was unwilling to hire workers at the going rates, which directly led to not being able to make enough Adderall to meet their commitment to the DEA and to patients in the US.

Are they increasing the other meds to compensate for the Adderall shortage? I'm sure many will switch to something else. I want to know if I'll have trouble getting my son's Vyvanse soon. His ADHD is worse than mine. I functioned 40 yrs without medication. I'll figure it out. My son will have serious behavior issues without his medication. He will go from straight As to sitting in the principal's office for something impulsive and stupid.

@@beepbopboop3221 +1 for the relatable handle. My generic was $15 last month, but now it's out of stock everywhere around me even by mail from CVS Caremark. After talking with my psychiatrist we settled on Vyvanse as the next best option. Only problem is it costs $177 (and that's *after* I met my deductible).

@@beepbopboop3221 yep. Stock up if you can get a 90-day mail order bc I just read a couple of articles saying the shortage in some places has spread to Concerta, Ritalin, and Vyvanse among others. The way the supply chain and the regulators/lawmakers are handling it, I expect this shortage "phenomena" will eventually spread to everything on the DEA's controlled substances list sooner or later. The controls they have for setting mfg limits always lag behind changes in demand by design. Who ever thought of that idea? Dunno, but it will likely take a literal act-of-Congress to change that dismally bleak future.
@DrJohnKruse
@DrJohnKruse Жыл бұрын
@@beepbopboop3221 the DEA has not yet authorized increased amounts of other stimulants. Part of the problem is that they only make their allotments once a year, so there is potentially a very long lag time to fix the system. Maybe more pertinent in my mind (and I haven't found an answer this question) is whether there are fines for the companies who do not meet their allotments. They sign a contract with the DEA that they will make a certain amount of the medication for the US population each year, and they should be held responsible if they betray their agreement.
