Man.. you are a sage... I was struggling with a new Ukulele... I just reversed the installation of the C string and BAM... the buzz was gone... When I examined the string by running my index finger over it, I could feel flat areas on the string.. these were exactly at the points where the buzz was coming from... Thanks a lot :-)

Number 5 in the vid (in my case) I also noticed that on just the G chord (plus that chord was extremely out of tune even when the strings were tuned). Took it to a shop, they replaced the original saddle with a higher one and it improved the sound by a ton. I'm new to ukulele so i'm unsure if that's the problem others' ukes but hope this helps

When I say 'fatal' I don't necessarily mean unfixable - but the sort of thing that isn't easily fixed at home - might need frets re-dressing or a neck reset. Both are possible though!

Thanks for this! I had a buzz on my A-string at the 3rd fret, and a couple of others higher up the neck. The Uke was a cheapy tanglewood, but I love the sound, so I took it a luthier. He wanted to charge me 120 quid to redress all the frets and suggested that it might be ultimately pointless anyway. Watched this video, slipped a rizzla under the bridge at the A string and the buzz is gone. Might be only temporarily covering up a fatal flaw, but means I get to keep playing this instrument for a while longer :D

mine uke is a weird case. Some days buzzes, others don't. Could be the cold and the temperature changes? I used to keep my uke on horizontal position at nights, but I thought that maybe that position made some presure on the tuners (curiosly the only strings that buzzes where the middle ones, whose tuners where the ones that maybe could be affected by the "presure" I told). Y later discovered a bit loose screw at the third string tuner, and I tighted it a bit more. Since then and by keeping it on vertical position always, any problem (I hope it'll continue fine! :D) Your video helped me a lot, thank you :). You got my subscribe Sorry for my english

Great video, great pieces of advice. I'll check my buzzing "Khahlhah"... I improvised myself a uke-tech by lowering the nut with sandpaper to have shorter action and now... bbbzzzzzzzz bbzzzZZZZZzzzzz. When I press the strings at 3rd fret, there is still a gentle space (less than paper thick actually) between 1st fret wired and string but... I'll try everything you said, sir.

I don't have a buzzing Ukulele but my friend does and it buzzes a lot on the E string. I checked all the nuts and screws nothing was loose but i found out that the bridge is not glued on it comes out. I didn't mess with it and just keep on looking for other problems. We tried to change the string but it still buzzes and we know strings are not the problem because I have the same strings on my ukulele and it works fine. I tried to put the string the opposite side it still buzzes but atleast it's playable now so thank you 💖. All this makes me believe the ukulele was factory defected and he didn't realise this at that time.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 10 ай бұрын
The bridge saddle is supposed to come out - but under string tension shouldn't rattle. Having the same strings on another ukulele is not an indication they are not the problem. The reason a string can buzz can be because THAT particular string has uneven thickness along the length. Another set of the same brand can be fine. Just a dead string. If you've ruled out all you mentioned, you are now into the territory of a possible high fret or mis-set / bent neck
@Tamj_Bty
@Tamj_Bty 10 ай бұрын
@@GotAUkulele actually we discovered the problem few days ago and it had nothing to do with the strings nor the bridge. Under very careful observing of the Ukulele we discovered that there was a Crack on the Nut and it was only on a perticular string and that was the reason it was buzzing. And fixing the Nut will be one of the most annoying and time consuming job so the owner decided to just leave it and buy a new ukulele.

I had the loose battery case in one of my Uke's, I stuffed a thin bit of material in the slot to stop the rattle, I've also had Uke's with loose frets, this can happen with temperature changes apparently after they leave the factory. I think also frets that are uneven can be a pain in the ass, exspecially with cheaper Uke's making them unplayable higher up the fretboard.

It does sound good if I pluck that specific string which I'm adding pressure on but when I strum the whole thing it sounds horrible. Can someone help me with this?
@GotAUkulele

Could be a few things. Firstly you don’t want to squeeze the life out of the strings or pull them slightly sideways when you fret. Straight down and just far enough to engage frets. Could be your frets need dressing down (too high) or your nut or saddle are too high. Hard to say without seeing it. For the nut, when you fret third fret space string just just kiss top of first fret or leave gap as thin as piece of paper. Any more and that could be issue

The rattle goes away when I press the 3rd fret and anything higher. I tried flipping the strings and it didn't change. There is no contact with the high frets, so the overall action looks fine. I went from Aquilla super nylguts to Aquila carbon blacks, I now have a rattle and was wondering if it had to do with the different sized gauges of the strings.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 7 жыл бұрын
Possibly yes - if your ukulele was set up just on the edge - ie action close to buzzing, but not - if you then put thicker gauge strings on you can suddenly create a buzz. Try a small shim of paper under the base of the saddle. Might be just enough to stop it.

The Uke in question is a Kala Solid Mahogany Concert. I bought it from Hawaiian Music Supply, and it came set up with the thicker Aquila Super Nylgut strings. They like to set their string heights between 2.5 and 3mm. When its not being played it has a hard case with a humidifier. Today I haven't noticed the rattle at all, maybe I was playing to hard. Still thanks for the advice if the rattle comes back I'll try that.

So I feel like I've narrowed the buzzing down to a possible loose bolt. If they hold onto the bolt and the post the buzzing essentially stops but trying to tighten it does nothing. I'm guessing that means it's part of the post or gear that's loose? Is there a way to fix that or do I just need to replace all of the pegs? I should mention this is the cigar box that I purchased on Etsy. Wasn't expecting amazeballs quality but also annoyed that it buzzes.

Depends what bolt you mean - if it's a hex bolt on the front of the headstock - that can be tightened with a socket driver. Not sure where else a bolt would be on a tuner?

I have a new ukulele with a terribly buzzy c string. I sent it back and the manufacturer claims to have done a lot of work but it still buzzes. the buzz comes from the saddle and I can suppress it by touching certain spots. I'm tired of fighting the manufacturer on this. I feel like they really don't pay attention. I have 2 other instruments that are fine so I know the difference. also, it seems to matter where I strum. if I strum over the sound hole, it is real bad. it I strum up on the fret boad, no buzz. any thoughts?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like terrible customer service there! Really, if you have exhausted all the steps in this video and it's STILL buzzing, you have a more critical fault with your instrument like the neck being at the wrong angle or one of the frets being too high. In my experience, 95% of buzzes are to do with strings or things like tuner washers or battery compartments. The balance is usually down to bridge or nut height. If you have changed strings, raised the bridge and nut but still have it - you really now need to take it to a specialist for something like a fret dressing or to check braces, neck angle. Seriously though, if it's a new ukulele and still buzzing I would demand a refund and get a different one!

All about a logical approach with buzzes. Start with the easy, only worry about the difficult when youve ruled out all the easy stuff. I once saw a guy online saying step 1 was to check neck was straight.. yes, buzzes can be caused by a twisted neck, but far more common it’s something simpler

It can indeed, but I did address it generally - I would put that sort of issue right at the bottom of the list and as i say - suggest for those you speak to a specialist. This is a channel for beginners - I dont want to be advising new players get involved in fret dressing. The video is about eliminating the main causes in a logical way with a view to beginners being able to fix the simple stuff themselves.

Hey, ive just recently got a new Uke and im 100% certain that the buzzing is coming from the cords from the pickup and such touching the body, Ive tried putting multiple thin wires around the cords to hold them together, making them shorter-ish, but if i move from a position, it will just go back to buzzing. So it kinda works but not all the time. What do you think i can do about this??
@GotAUkulele

Its a very common cause of buzzing. All you can really do is find a way to tape the cables down inside - which is what they should do when they fit them

I just bought a brand new concert uku bring it home and it's rattling. I call store and was told this happens with all new instruments bcse of the strings. I was told to stretch them and keep tuning back a bunch of times and it would settle. It's been 2 days and lots of Playing and still it sounds nasty. I looked closely at strings and on the C string from hole down the string isn't smooth, even after cleaning it, it almost feels bumpy?? Could this be why it sounds so gross? Should I return this and just order a sunstar uku online instead?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 4 жыл бұрын
The store should be ashamed - this does NOT happen with all new instruments. They may be right if the strings are not fully settled - and that could take a few weeks (but you should still know before then if it is buzzing). Your experience with the strings sounds like old or worn strings which 'can' cause it, but still would only cause it if the ukulele setup was already too low. I would return it! Difficult to understand what is happening from a description - but it the strings are being muted because they are touching the frets when at rest - the action height of the strings needs raising. A guitar shop will be able to help you with that. Ultimately, with 99% of ukes - all those things are designed to be adjustable. So not necessarily a waste - likely it can be fixed.

Because if it’s a string or fret height issue, the action of holding a chord lowers the fretted strings. Because they are a bit lower they may create a buzz that otherwise isn’t there when you strum it open.
