I paid the eShop pre-order price here in the U.S., so I paid around $60 too. I never got a chance to play it first time around because GameCube was one of the Nintendo consoles I never owned. Ended up going Xbox that gen. Anyway, would I have preferred paying the price that the U.K. had? Yes. Am I mad about it? No. I wish I could play it more, but unfortunately due to health issues I can't play long without having to rest and my ability to focus is often difficult when gaming. I will eventually get around to it, but so far TTYD seems like a really good game. I loved the original Paper Mario, but I had a lot more patience with games back then and now, if I get stuck or don't know what to do, I quickly save and quit and switch to something chill and mind-numbing (games I practically have muscle memory for). Anyways, great video and got a kick out of some of the comments that you called out.

I never really got into The Paper Mario series and focused on the 3d series as a kid, I do come back from time to time for the nostalgia. If people are willing to pay that amount they will pay that amount and just enjoy the experience. Obviously predatory pricing needs to be called out, I know of people that have Japanese Nintendo accounts so they'd be able to get the Japanese version of games I suspect that the lower pricing point would also be a source of motivation. Seeing the knee jerking is mildly entertaining, but don't get stale.

TBH you can't directly compare costs with 2 different currencies. You have to compare yearly incomes first. The prices are generally adjusted for the average incomes of your nation. The future going rate for videogames in the US is looking to be $70 Lady Decade. $60 was the average price this past generation and it has been $60 for many generations now so I don't quite understand. It's not specifically about Paper Mario. It's the entire industry.

I don't have a lot of experience with content creation and uploading your content on the internet puts it up for the public to see. Naturally there will be a fraction of people who that are unreasonable and an even smaller fraction that are unhinged and lash out because they can. I always try to ignore people who are unreasonable or try to insult you. Differences of opinion or conversation is totally different and fine. Its ok to disagree about anything really but when it comes to gaming discourse it's just pointless to be nasty. Its just a hobby we all enjoy in our own ways.

Well, KZfaq has never been known for having a high amount of intelligent people. Same goes for all social media platforms.

AWMonoplyMan did make a good point that this has been happening for a while now. Some of the smaller British retailers have been selling games at lower prices compared to Nintendo UK, Amazon UK, or GAME UK. The only reason the game seems so cheap in Japan compared to the US is because of how weak the Japanese Yen is compared to the US dollar at the moment.

As a Californian, 9% isn't the most, that is maybe counting state tax only, but that can easily jump with county and city taxes on to of that. California sales tax alone is 7.75, so even then this is incorrect and the commenter didn't do their research. It can be from 8 to 10 plus %. Also, last of us is amazing and one of my favorite games of all time, but the ps5 remake is objectively a bad deal. You can get the original and sequel for less than the remake. I get if you need the accessibility options, but otherwise it's a bad deal and you shouldn't be charged 70 to play the game.

I think a big reason why they can do it is because of the retro gaming cost explosion. Unless you are lucky, you cannot get the original game. The most silly thing is full price for digital. I paid 55euro for a new physical Zelda TotK at launch instead of 70 for digital.

Great video Lady Decade. When I saw your previous video about the pricing difference of this game compared to UK and Japan, I was pretty mad.. I am a fan of this game , but I see no logical reason why Americans should be paying 50-100% more than other countries. The response you received were ridiculous. It was like they didn't understand what you were talking about. While you mentioned the Gamecube version being a collectors item I thought I might have a copy.. Went down my basement and I found it. Pretty good conditon with manual and receipt. I bought 10/12/2004 for $52.99.. Now if I just had a Gamecunbe to play it on. lol

even though i really like paper mario, i really must agree with you, you are fully entitled to have your own opinion of it and if someone can't handle it it's their problem.

First off, I'd like to say I love your channel, and people need to understand, you don't come into someone's home and take a dump in it. Also one needs to either read, or in this case, watch the entire video before rendering a judgment call. With that said, Lady Decade, I agree with you wholeheartedly, and I find it hilarious at the 'I'll pay $ X for any popular game,' where I want to go, 'Would you?' in a Rifftrax/MST3K tone. Then I ponder 'where is this magic money tree you have, and how can I find it, so I can prune a few grand from it.' Considering the fact how the state of our US economy is, I would rather use my income for things like food and utilities than taking out a mortgage on a video game. (I exaggerate, of course, but you get the gist.) But I digress, since I once worked GameCrazy, I find the Twilight Zone/Night Gallery twist behind this apathy towards the price apathy, was back then, we were always deluged by difficult customers complaining why we were selling a game for $50-60, while our competitors (infamously Wal-Mart and Toys R Us) would sell the same title for less. In fact, they would become enraged when our stores could not 'price match.' Thus, I find it amusing how nowadays many claim they don't care about the current price discrepancy Lady Decade indicated, nor become concerned and outraged. Intriguing, because folks here keep attempting on applying modern day economics over past economics, going under the assumption $60 in 2024 is the same as $60 in 1983. When we know it's not. For example in 1983, a NES cartridge ranged about $30 to $50 which is now about $94 to $157 in 2024. Therefore, those growing up back then, knew ultimately, despite the game quality, your parents were not going to run out and purchase this game for you, unless it was for the holidays. And even then, you were lucky to even get the system itself at all. Ironically, my Dad purchased an NES to play 1942, which he only did for a few moments, then I ended up getting it for myself. Nonetheless, this is why the Big 'N' hated Blockbuster and local video stores renting out their games, because most people could part with a $5 rental ($15.74 in 2024), experience the game, and if it was not up to snuff, didn't feel horrible as if they just had shelled out the $30-50 for it. This is why until streaming did away with the video stores, people usually preferred renting their games rather than going out and shelling the cash for them. Putting it in a better perspective, imagine if we had specialized game stores here in the US, where each store was ran by a different country like the UK or Japan. And hypothetically, let's say they could sell Paper Mario: TTYD for the suggested retail price from their country, than the set US SRP. Meaning while the US would be at $60, the UK one would be selling it for $36, and the Japanese one could be selling it for about $25 (rough estimates, since I'm trying to remember Lady Decade's previous quotes in an earlier video). Now which place would you go to purchase your copy? And remember, since the Switch is region free, and you could probably set the language on the Japanese version (if possible). Probably the Japan based gaming store, since its copy would be the most economical. Also, if the Japan store was unavailable in your area, you'd go to the UK store. Bottom line is, though some claim they don't mind paying the $60, I can't help think why ARE the US versions of Nintendo games more expensive than their foreign counterparts, and what other price gouging has the Big 'N' done to their American consumers? Because no matter how you attempt rationalizing it, the arguments don't really wash. Apologies once more for the long comment, Lady Decade, but I felt this was something requiring more than a few words, and my avatar here is a drawing of one my characters, btw, since I like to draw and create. One thing life taught me was that a passionate person doesn't value reason. But talking about the game...apart from graphical update. Does the game has any other improvement? As someone that has the Gamecube version I'm honestly curious about it.

Regarding remaking games, in general I support remaking games, but I think what they charge depends on how much they do. If they rebuild the game from the ground up (e.g. Mafia Definitive Edition), then charge full price. If they just update the original with better textures and a few code changes to enable the game to run on modern hardware, or even just bundle the original with an emulator, they should charge consderably less than full price. I also wish they'd stop multiple remakes or remasters of the same thing. Looking you, Rockstar. I'm a massive GTA fan, having purchased every game, and completed the single player mode in each several times. I've purchase the GTA 3 games on both the PC and iOS devices. When Rockstar released the "Definitive edition" of the GTA Trilogy, I was genuinly excited.. Then, I saw that what they released was essentially a copy of paste of the iOS version with minimal graphic improvements. I didn't buy it..
