I can relate to this. I have been following Jesus for 33 years now but stop going to church 7 years ago. Was treated like crap by church people who had no idea how to love others. I feel more accepted by non-Christians than I do church people.

Basically the story of my life. Grew up in a church family, but always felt the odd one out in church, left and joined the carnival... first year there Dean Brody was playing in niverville, at our first spot outside of Winnipeg. was a season to never forget...

"i was raised in a small town underneath a steeple raised with the good book in my hand" because a book that glorifies discrimination by sexuality (which is something you can control as much as the color of your skin) is SUCH a good book

You can like the book, but not all of its messages. You can also not take them as being literal. The message of this song seems to say that he believes in God, but doesn't agree with how some of his followers act, or the more judgmental teachings in the book. Hence, he's a black sheep.
