When he was a senior in college, Dean Koontz won an Atlantic Monthly fiction competition and has been writing ever since. His books are published in 38 languages and he has sold over 500 million copies to date. His latest book, After Death, is out now.
We had an amazing chat with Dean about his writing career, hearing how he got started back in 1968 writing sci fi, why he pivoted to suspense thrillers and horror, and how he continues to come up with amazing new ideas for his novels. He also tells us how he comes up with his famous twists, and tells us why he chose to go with publisher Thomas & Mercer for his latest novels.

Over 23yrs ago, my mother gave me a book titled "Twilight Eyes" by Dean Koontz...At that point I had never heard of Koontz and didnt want to try a new author. However, my mother(who was an avid reader herself) said that maybe Id discover a new favorite author in Koontz and ya know what?? Mom was right!! Twilight eyes was an incredible read and Ive been reading Koontz ever since. And yes, hes my favorite author📖! Ive now read over 60 books by Koontz! Thanks mom😎

I always enjoy these chats, and it's particularly educational and challenging to listen to someone like Dean whose work isn't a genre I would normally read. Thanks guys!

That America could have produced both Dean Koontz AND Stephen King makes me beyond proud!

He is a luke warm writer that panders to the masses.

Not sure i would refer to all his books as luke warm. That being said, I have read a few of his books that were lame in my opinion so I haven't read a novel by him in years. But overall, I believe most of them are great. I love Odd Thomas for example.
