Hey Dean, I studied under you for 2yrs in San Diego and I can say you we're the most humblist of people. Fast forward 11yrs later and thousands of miles away and now because of my experience in your classes I have my children studying BJJ. Thank you for being you. Wish them luck, they're going for their blue belts in January!

I can't tell what is more impressive, the pain that was withheld from that ugly pressure, or the fact that dean STILL claps and hugs and handshakes with the dislocation still fresh. Holy fuck I need to get on that level.

He came out to Ft. Stewart Army base in Georgia in 2006 when I was stationed there. He did a meet and greet at the PX, and I was lucky enough to meet him. He signed an old copy of Grappling magazine I had brought along with me with him on the cover. Got a picture with him, and put both in a frame that I still have on my gym wall to this day. All class. I wish him all the best, and a speedy (hopefully already over) recovery!

+Lister Dean You're are one of my fav grapplers & MMA fighters during your run there. Just finished with Rogan & Jocko Willink talk about you on podcast. Jocko saying you're a human mutant w/natural talents. Kerimov was doing intense preparation training for you meanwhile you going there based on your skill. You're a natural talent & heal up quickly! Shout out from Toronto, Ontario -Canada

Hey Dean, I dont know if I reach you this way, but a discussion on quora really triggered my interest, and maybe it is fun for you to: "Can the strongest known human fight a gorilla and win?" www.quora.com/Can-the-strongest-known-human-fight-a-gorilla-and-win The consensus there no, but I thought maybe with a BJJ and extensive preparation for such a fight one might have a chance? Given that people with BJJ knowledge did defeat much stronger opponents in the past... Just a fun but kind of deep question about human possibilities and the utility of martial arts...

I love Dean, all class and respect. He is a warrior and made no excuses, tough as nails. No disrespect to the Russian, however he just looked like a massive strongman with no technique in any martial art (unless you want to count those Ezekiels) trying to crush his opponent. I've seen massive white belts the same size with 3 months training who literally do the same thing, lay/smash inside guard the entire time and try to smash/choke from guard. There were countless times that stalling/inactivity could have/should have been called on the guy on top. Some commenters below said that Dean could have also been called for stalling, however this is untrue as he was on bottom. The obligation to work is placed on the top opponent.

lllllionllllll You have to become very "aware" in the position, where you take in your balance, the pressure put on them, how the pressure is applied, etc. Overall, you just have to see it done enough and do it enough to a point where you know when to do it. It is like if you have someone in a triangle, after awhile you just know how to finish it.
