I was about 15 when this aired. One of the things I appreciate most about watching these clips is it reminds me of my dad, sitting in his recliner in his boxers with his alka-seltzer fizzing beside him, laughing at all these guys from his generation. I miss my dad, and I miss these times.

Yeah my dad watched from his recliner too in bvds and socks. Had one of those end tables with the magazine rack and attached early American style lampshade. He drilled holes on one side to hold his pipes and hung floss swords from the lamp switch. Had a bottle of Mentholatum and another of Tums. Mom just let him have his spot. And NOBODY was allowed to take any of his shit or sit there. (No problem since he sat in his underwear!) Grandkids were always trying to steal his fruit flavored Tums because they tasted like SweetTarts ! Sure miss him.

@@uncletio0428 Why? Because they walk after the course of the world. They give their service to their flesh and this world’s evil. They relish in material things which one day will crumble into dust. Theirs is a citizenship under the wicked god of this world, and unfortunately are promised death and judgement as a result of their sin (l Corinthians 15:22 KJV). But they could have the promise of really “having it all.” They could be rich in “all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” by being a member of the church, His body ( Ephesians 1:3; l Corinthians 12:27; Colossians 1:18 KJV). Instead of a citizenship here, they could receive a citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3:20 KJV). Interesting how Dean played the drunk so well, of course the people around him played along. After his death many of his fellow performers open up to the truth he drank very little. Dean often used apple juice as it had the look of a strong drink. One of the give a ways, the same jokes such as when he looked around and said "how all these people get into your room" were part of his well rehearsed routines. Jerry seinfeld told a story about when he was just getting started in the business, and had to follow dean as a guess. Before going on the two talked a bit back stage and Dean was stone sober, Jerry was amazed how easily he sled into the tipsy guest while in the interview.

I understand that I'm certainly biased when I say Johnny Carson was the standard of late night talk shows. Being born in 1955, he came into my orbit when I was maybe 10/11yrs old. Watching these KZfaq and nostalgic channels now, that show reruns of the shows, what really stands out with Carson, was his innate ability to 'lightly' poke fun at whomever was the president, which is the way it should be. But now? It's really kind of sad what passes as late night talk. I don't watch the shows of course, as my generation as long gone out of the limelight, but the articles I'll see online, that comment on the vitriol that these late night hosts now exhibit on a nightly basis. It's really kind of sad.

She is a grieving mother who lost her son to car accident by a drunk driver, feels Dean Martin's antics on The Tonight Show last night is something we should take action to." 6. At this point, Dean was 58-year-old n semi-retired. This episode is legendary because he has bob hope there. They work well with each other. Johnny, being around dean over 15yrs at this point, understood his humor n does great with dean as well. So, dean is in his comfort zone right here. He's just chilling but being candid while being funny. He is worth over 20 million here with a place in the hills n single. All he does at this point is play golf n host the roast 3-4x a year. Bob is the real BIG $$$! Here, he's worth around 200 million (over 1billion today). Oil profits with Bing Crosby fueled the EPIC rise in net worth. Bob Hope was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century; performing for 70 years! He is an American Institute. Bob Leslie townes hope was a founding pioneer of comedy. Johnny Carson is the greatest late night talk show host EVER!!! His format was genius.

Bob Hope, at some point, was the second largest property owner in the State of California, and reportedly worth somewhere around $800 million. Several sources have said he was never married to the woman who he represented as his "wife" Dean's reference to seeing Angie Dickinson backstage almost caused Johnny Carson to swallow his upper lip, because he was having an "affair" with her at the time.

It will never be that way again and that is why it is so special to those of us who remember it like it was yesterday. These men were role models who shaped our lives in small, large and ways we are not even aware of. Despite all the troubles of the time, we could always relax and get a much needed reality check by watching Carson at the end of the day. We knew it wouldn't last forever and now 40 years later we wake up with the realization that "forever" is here. The younger generation today does not know what they have missed and you can't tell them. That is their loss and that is the tragedy of being reminded of what "we", the old Frankie/Annette generation have lost over the years. Thanks guys for making it special.

Roll models?? Hardly and not by a long shot! It is well known that Dean and Johnny were womanizers and hard drinkers, especially Dean. And Dean was already smoking pot while he and Jerry Lewis were still together. These guys may have been funny but absolutely were not role models. Sometime read Dean and Me by Jerry Lewis. You'll learn a lot.
@peterpherfinion66716 жыл бұрын
MaryMac I'm not the one who needs to "learn a lot, toots"! It was well known that Dean's act of being a drinker and carouser was just that, an "act". Every public figure of every time in history has their own bumps and barnacles, the fact remains that they largely kept it to themselves and which was only made public after some tell all publication years and years later. People had the courtesy and ethical moorings not to trot it out for sensationalist purposes like they do today which serves no purpose other than the almighty dollar. I "read a book once"...my gawd, what a weak statement! Rock Hudson's homosexuality was an open secret in Hollywood but was generally unknown outside the trade (same with Paul Lynde and both Darin's from Bewitched). George Reeve's dalliance with a mob bosses wife wasnt known until 30 years after his death. Problem is, you've been sold a bill of goods that no one, regardless of argument, will ever change your mind or enlighten you. Like I said, I was there, I was lucky and fortunate enough to know some of these people personally and can only tell you not to believe everything you read unless you get the information from a variety of sources including the primary. Besides, they were MY role models, and although they obviously weren't yours, I find your disrespect of me and what "I think and believe" as cowardly and tasteless befitting the troll you probably are. Get a life and stop butchering things of which you have no idea of what your speaking about. Grow up!

As dean said himself:“ I feel bad for people who don’t drink, because when they wake up in the morning, this is as good as they gonna feel.“

Martin appears drunk, but probably wasn't. That was his act. If you watched his show, you knew that he played a lovable drunk to perfection. But his comic timing is too good for him to be drunk. He doesn't miss a thing. Some backer or producer or someone important asked him in a business meeting if he was going to give them trouble with his drinking. He had just signed the largest TV deal in history. Dean explained to him that he was in charge of one of the most successful production companies in the entertainment world, and that he handled tens of millions of dollars (1970s), and he ran his affairs without incident. After dozens of movies, a career in music, and the number 1 career in TV history, how could he do it if he was drunk? He was the only "old guy" who ever knocked the Beatles out of 1st place on the charts. No one that drunk would ever have been able to manage three entertainment careers at the top of his game in each. It takes some explaining to people who didn't know this guy that he was simply one of the most remarkable people in all of show business. And acting a little off-the-handle drunk was his thing. He was quick, and he was at his best when the stakes were high, so doing live TV was what he loved. Moving it toward the edge was what got laughs and brought in the audiences. His TV deal specified no rehearsal and no retakes. That was as close as you could get to live TV on a weekly show. People would pay money to see Dean being Dean, and he knew it and capitalized on it. That's all there is to it.
@rogerwilco43977 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. Martin was a master at the drunkard role and felt he needed a "hook" after the Lewis split. He lifted the bit from guys like Phil Harris, among others. Could he have done three films per year, plus his TV show, host a golf tournament, record in the studio and perform live in Vegas and elsewhere if he was tanked? Network execs would never let him on if he was toasted. Watch Kris Kristofferson as host of SNL, which occured in the very same year. Now THAT'S drunk. On Martin's part, it's an act.

From an article on Classic Hollywood when his daughter was interviewed in 2015: A few years ago, I chatted with his daughter Deanna Martin, who is also a singer, about her dad. She noted that the whole "Dino" personality was a gimmick. "When he started to redo his nightclub act, he started at the Sands Hotel and had some writers helping him," she said. "It was like Jack Benny who had the violin thing and made fun about being cheap. Dad was so handsome, so debonair. They just thought, 'We'll put a drink in his hand and a cigarette.' Every man wanted to be him, and every woman wanted to be with him."The truth of the matter, she said, was her father was swigging apple juice and not liquor when he performed. "He would be home for dinner every night," Martin said. "He would come home, and he and mom would have their one cocktail at the bar. He was kind. He was so different from what everybody thought he was. There was no one who could do Dean Martin better than Dean Martin."

This was a Friday night. So, in 1975 I was waiting for “The Midnight Special” after Carson.

I just followed this up by watching Dean, Bob Hope and George Gobbels on Tonight from 1969 and Dean did the same act with the same hilarious results. He was dropping his cigarette ashes in George's drink!

That was what Hope was referring to at the beginning of the clip. At about the 2:20 mark, Dean goes to flick his ashes in Bob's drink, and Bob pulls his drink away, and then quips, "I remember that from eight years ago."

If only Johnny's couch could talk! Man, the people he had on that show! So great to have these videos and the multipack compilation that was put out several years ago so we can relive late night brilliance! And apropos of nothing, I love Dean's outfit -- beige sweater and pants with an off-white jacket! And sometimes they leave in the old commercials. Crazy!

I was age 15, and in 9th grade when this episode was made. Doesn't seem like it's been that long ago. I mainly watched this show during summer, because I had school the next day. Of course, after I graduated I could watch it any night of the year. This show is an American icon. Great memories.
