@@recompile I agree with Rahell. It was harmless in the day. There was no debate about same sex marriage. Not only was it illegal but was widely considered so ridiculous that the mere suggestion was nothing but a very funny joke. Even gay people accepted that because they had no option. They knew there was no possibility of that ever happening. Therefore there was nothing to be harmed. The harm you speak of was already enshrined in law, culture, religion and society as a whole. Gay people knew the score even if they did not like it. Today things are very different. It has actually recently become legal and more accepted. I regard this as a good thing which was much too long in happening but it is not correct to blame jokes like this for the length of time it took. That was down to religion and politics and the brainwashing of the mass populace which those things do. Same sex marriage was so far beyond the pale in those days that there simply was no debate about the issue to be damaged. Now that has all changed and still it does not do harm because the battle is won. I do get the point that this sketch would not work these days due to it being considered offensive and because things could Chang’s again and same sex marriage could be once again outlawed though it would not be easy to do because people are married and their lives are based on that so erasing that would cause massive human rights issues.
@independentfilmchannel14762 жыл бұрын
@@briganfree3656 Good god, people are taking this harmless sketch way too seriously. The fact is it probably couldn't be done today on television, but in the context of the time, it is still very funny and not nearly so offensive as that Men on Film bullshit from In Living Color. That was cluelessly vicious.

When ratings eventually went down, the show was renamed the Dean Martin Comedy Hour. Later, as a last resort, "Dean's Place" switched to Fridays. Dean had been with NBC since 1948, tastes changed, and Dean was bored out of his mind with television. He made a deal with MGM for films, made one, and bailed on that, too. As Frank Sinatra said of his friend after Dean canceled his 1988 Together Again tour, "You see, Mr. Martin doesn't like to work."
