If the name Michael Melchiondo does not ring a bell, it’s because he is known professionally by his stage name of Dean Ween, one half of the band Ween, who for nearly 30 years-along with Gene Ween (whose real name is Aaron Freeman)-have been releasing into the world a very unique style of music. Deaner (as he is also known) is currently touring with the Dean Ween Group-which features all of the touring members of Ween, minus Gener-and the Dean Ween Group have an album called “Rock2.” The full lineup of Ween has also recently announced several live shows for the summer. Melchiondo and Freeman met in 1984, adopting the Ween surname in their early teenage years, but for Melchiondo, his love for music began with his father. In this episode of the Berklee Online “Music Is My Life” podcast, Deaner spends a lot of time discussing his life in music, and how he arrived at his guitar sound.

I love that even though so many people make the assumption that Ween is trying to make some kind of "statement" about other bands and other types of music, they're really just doing what they love and what comes to them at every turn. Love this man, he's one of my heroes

I saw them on the C&C tour in Belgium. The show sold out so when we arrive the organizer told us they rented another room a mile or so away. Someone led the way with a torch and they handed out torches every 10 or 30 people or so so there was a whole promenade of troches down the streets of this little town and it led to a theatre building on a hill, so you could see the lineof people and torches go up there and it looked like some sacred ceremony. Then Ween played. Had a blast. They kept playing... for four hours. Gener downed a bottle of Jack during the set and Deaner played music by putting the guitar plug to his eyeballs while Gener screamed "No Deaner!! Not the eyes!!". I never saw something like that. Any song could morph into a stellar jam at any point, they were having a blast and everyone was thinking; "so this is what music is like". Totally floored everyone, good vibes all around.

Hearing one rock star I have met mentioning another rock star that I have met is incredible. Dean Ween mentioned Richie Havens and I met each of them after their concerts when they played in Fayetteville AR. Maybe music is my life too.

Great interview from an obviously long time fan. I couldn't get a ride to that show at Babyhead but saw them the next day at Axis in Boston with a couple of tape deck songs and Andrew on bass.
