Curious to hear from my nut allergy folks. Do you eat things that say 'may contain' or 'made in a facility'? I always avoid 'may contain' but sometimes will eat something that says manufactured in a facility where etc. etc.
Do you eat at restaurants? Carry multiple epipens? Is there anything that I got wrong in this video?
What other topics should I cover?

dude thank you so much for this video. best humor and awesome representation for food allergies. i go into anaphylactic shock when i eat peanuts, seafood, and shellfish. i have been through every one of these examples😂 i eat things with the "may contain" and "made in a facility" labels unless i feel unsure, which is just a guessing game

im allergic to all nuts and seeds besides almonds (sometimes still allergic if the skin is on) which translates to also being allergic to whole grain. Also some avocados but i think thats bc bits of the pit can migrate to the green part. Ive found fermentation or high temperatures can sometimes help, but raw seeds (sesame, pumpkin seeds, or poppy in salads or sushi) or even chocolate are usually bad news. I hate the experience of asking, checking, and being suspicious. Constantly. I honestly have gone through periods of just not caring and I had a ton of reactions and people close to me were pretty pissed. Understandably. I just have a naturally adventurous personality and I'm not a picky eater, and I've grown to love spicy food even if it's a huge risk. I'm hoping to build community with more people who share my allergies so we can cook for each other, hear the wild stories, and understand that the immune system is totally separate from our individual personalities/curiosity. Thanks for posting and inspiring me!

My son has a peanut allergy. Prior to his birth I never paid attention to those warning labels as I don't have any food allergies. But what an eye opener! Its like everything is made in a facility with peanuts. Its freaking insane. Keep making awesome videos my friend :)

Hey Dean, stumbled upon your Pittsburgh neighborhood videos, good stuff! Keep that up. I am a 54 year old guy that developed a nut allergy several years ago. Don't think its as bad as yours though. For a week to 10 days I had developed an itchy rash all over my body. Couldn't figure out why. Went to doctors. They thought it was a bout of exzema (spelling). Gave me a shot & for the most part itchiness went away. Never been a big nut eater, although absolutely loved peanut butter & almonds. Months go by & I realize every time I eat nuts my body reacts differently. Peanuts I just get itchy. Walnuts make me wheezy. Pecans I break out. Speaking of pecans, at the time I developed itchy rash I realized I was eating a pumpkin pie cheesecake & the crust had pecans in it. Go figure. The worst is almonds! Makes me feel like somebody has kicked me in the gut and just keeps the pressure of the punch on my stomach. I've learned to stay completely away from nuts on their own. These days if I eat something like bread or whatever that might have been made in a facility with nuts, I get a bit itchy. Not life threatening, but bothersome. And like you, I check ingredients to see if made in a nut free facility or not. Sucks to have an allergy to nuts. So many good foods that include nuts. Anyways, that's me & my allergy to nuts.

I have severe anaphylaxis to pretty much all nuts and was diagnosed 15 years ago (now in my 20s). I avoid everything that says may contain. I think one of the biggest issues missed in the video (although that might be because its different in the UK) is what oil food is fried in. Often it just says vegetable oil but that can include nut oils, and so I have to check every time that it is palm or rapeseed or sunflower just to be certain. This video is brilliant though, and really does help to demonstrate the struggles of having a food allergy, specifically nuts, and whilst the start seems very dramatic it isnt far from the reality when you are first diagnosed/trying new things. Obviously once you've lived with an allergy a long time it gets much simpler as you get an idea for what tends to be okay (still checking though of course). I had a fun one recently after the pret a manger scandal in the UK. Restaurants that previously said their food was safe started erring on the side of caution and saying they couldn't gaurantee it - when I asked them if anything had actually changed since the last time I was there the answer was nothing, just policy on what they had to say to customers.

Thank you for the comment! The oil thing confuses me. I always hear people say that peanut/nut oils are most commonly highly refined oils, so the protein that causes the allergic reaction is actually mutated during the refining process to the point where it no longer triggers a reaction. For instance, peanut allergy people often eat at places like chick-fil-a, where they cook everything in peanut oil. I always avoid peanut oil, but apparently it could actually be safe for me to eat? And your point with the policy change is so frustrating. There have been a few instances where something that never had an allergy label all of a sudden says 'manufactured in a facility where..etc.' and it drives me crazy. Did anything actually change? Or is the company just afraid of getting sued?
@juiy222
@juiy222 4 жыл бұрын
@@DeanBog Ive never heard that about the nut oils before, my doctor advised I avoid them and so ive just done so ever since. Better to be safe than sorry, it does not seem worth the risk to me. It definetely seems like policy change is driven by the fear of being sued as much if not more often than by the products themselves changing. There was a terrible loss a few years back of the Fabulous Bakin Boys company, founded by fathers of kids with nut allergies all the products were safe for years then they sold it and very quickly nut products were introduced in the same factory. I havent heard of them for years now, I imagine its because they lost their USP.

Dean, we frequent Green Mango in Monroeville. I've spoken to the owner multiple times, and the only peanut items on the menu are 1) anything satay 2) massaman curry 3) the dipping sauces, but they'll gladly leave out the peanuts if you mention it. They're awesome with how up-front and understanding they are.

Me and my girlfriend ate at The Zenith earlier tonight and I was talking with Rob about you, and he said "I love that dude, he's a nut." Didn't realize he meant that literally. 😂 Then my girlfriend did this impression of me "fangirling" if I ever met you and I had to laugh cause it was too accurate.

i love the video. i eat made in facility because my allergy is anaphalactic but we have no reason to think its airborne or sensitive enough to react to facility. i avoid equipment and may contain (same thing, different wording basically) because those have a higher chance of me reacting to it. i eat a restaurants all the time, its never really been a big deal (one time someone asked if i was allergic to peanut butter when he knew i have a peanut allergy- that was funny), but ive never eaten at a thai or chinease restaurant that would likely have a lot of nuts. i carry a pack of avi-qs wherever i go, and theres two in a pack. i also carry a dose of benedry which is enough to help with small exposures or reactions. i've only needed to use an avi-q once and that was during a food challenge to see if i was still allergic (spoiler alert- i am) and that was one of the scariest days of my life. whenever i fly i bring all the avi-qs and epipens i have because when youre trapped in a tin can in the sky you dont want to run out of life saving medicine. i also bring wet wipes (or during the pandemic airlines have provided them) to wipe down my seat incase theres peanut residue. delta is great and if you let them know before the flight they will annouce that there is a nut allergy on board and ask people not to eat nuts. they dont serve peanuts anymore, but when they did my dad would put it in the notes and htey woudlnt serve peanuts on the flight. hope this can help anyone else with an allergy!
