It’s similar to me & my husband with my house cats. When I first met my male cat, who is the largest domestic cat I’ve ever seen in real life, and who was homeless at the time (our female cat brought him home), even though he rubbed my leg at our first meeting, and was very loving, we got bit and scratched A LOT (there were reasons for this that we didn’t know about at the time) but we never got mad or showed him anything but respect & empathy - he stopped biting & grabbing on with claws the day after we treated him for fleas. He was so anxious from having fleas biting him, that he didn’t want to be touched much, especially towards his back end where we found the flea dirt. Also, when petting him, he would snap & hiss at us, and we often got bit (blood drawn) if we touched his lower back & one of his hind legs - it wasn’t visible, but he had an old, internal injury on one of his legs. Plus, his anxiety was heightened even more when he came to live with us, even though we did many things to lessen it, it’s just a part of it - we left the door open for the first week so that he could come & go, as he had a “den” in our neighborhood, he even took me to it several times. For several months, and even now, once in a while, he goes to check on his old sleeping place, he still guards it, but it has lessened greatly. He is more loving than most other cats we’ve had through the decades, he sleeps with us all night, every night, which our other cats never did, not all night. Many people would’ve given up on him and assumed he was mean, but like I said, he’s one of the most loving cats we’ve ever had. We had a female Persian cat, Fluffy, who was with us for 22 years- she came to us as a homeless cat, too. She was in excellent health even at 24 years old, still taking 2 or 3 long walks daily, except she developed breast cancer at 24, and it spread fast, so we had to say goodbye to her - we had her for 22 YEARS, that’s longer than most children live at home, she was like our child, our parent, and our grandparent all at the same time - she taught us so much! ❤
