Great interview, 3 thoughts about it: * 2:24 Some say Evan is a bad person and that they can't sympathize with him. But DEH isn't a story about a hero, it's about a young guy who struggles with severe anxiety, depression and loneliness. And he feels the pressure to do something good for a grieving family. The choices he makes are a result of all these things. * 3:27 It's so special to see how this musical has made a difference in so many lives. Don't forget there are a lot of youngsters who can sympathize with Evan VERY well. That's sad enough. * 5:18 Some say Ben is too old for this, or even accuse him of nepotism. Ok, makeup/lighting could have been done better sometimes, but I think he is the best Evan (and he doesn't look that old to me) Not just because his acting and singing, but the most important thing for me is how Evan is a part of Ben and Ben is a part of Evan. He developed the character so well. When he talks about Evan, you can feel this character has his heart.

I had a conversation with another KZfaqr about this movie - particularly what you’re first point addresses. The big part of that makes this movie interesting is that it displays humanity. Part of what makes depression so damning is that it makes you feel pathetically broken and outcasted when compared to other people, who may seem more content or capable. However, DEH shows how everyone struggles in some way while trying to live their best lives. It shows it through the many characters that are inspired to come forward and share their stories of struggle. Many people just handle/grapple with it differently. Also, the actions Evan takes (a huge lie) shows what anxiety and depression can drive a person to do. Evan, to me, was pretty much desperate for a way out of the perpetual emotional turmoil he felt from things like living with a single and overworked parent who isn’t around as much as either of them would like, as well as friends who seem cynical and uncaring much of the time. Said desperation is similar to what drives many people to contemplate/commit suicide. In addition, the whole thing started as an honest misunderstanding that grew out of control due to the awkwardness and apprehension that Evan felt about telling the truth. I say that it would be awkward and frightening because it would involve him revealing something personal and possibly humiliating (considering how mental health issues reportedly have a history of being stigmatized). Also, he earnestly did not want to break the hearts of the people whose lives were changed positively by this misunderstanding - one that he initially tried to correct, BTW. It seems that the (only) people who would best connect with and understand it are people who actually suffer from depression and anxiety because they would be able to relate with the behaviors, mentalities, and/or actions that are depicted in the film. Some people just don’t understand unless they’ve been through it themselves.

@@kayjayt8607" Evan, to me, was pretty much desperate for a way out of the perpetual emotional turmoil he felt ..." Have not read anyone putting that thought out when talking about Evan and "The Big Lie". As someone who suffers from depression, I see what Evan is trying to do (subconsciously). Thanks for articulating that.

Having someone in my life who has suffered from severe mental illness, I wouldn't wish that kind of anguish on anyone, not even my worst enemy.

Turning the news off and canceling cable was the best choice I could have made for my mental health. That stuff is toxic

I have three kids and never get out but even I would be willing to try and see this on the big screen. I don’t know if I can, but I would suggest to mask up and do it if you feel comfortable. 💜✨

I will. Even tho reviews aren't good so far. I really hope you and your kids will see it in theaters. Theatrical experience is intimacy.

@@Luckyduck82180 that’s what I thought too. However I was extremely disappointed in the movie. Too many songs are cut out and the essence of the theater has been completely torn off. The story is messed up already..
