Who knew you had to sit on literal warehouses of sealed product for years, start a KZfaq channel with near daily videos, and spend 12+ hours per day of back-breaking labor to make money in the cardboard world? That boring mutual fund sounds a whole lot better by comparison!

@@sloanxxr1440 Like many other collectibles it's value and it's demand both come from a small subset of individuals, some are investor bros trying to make a buck and others are collectors who maybe played at a young age in the 90s and want to recapture some of their youth, also of course there's the gamers. It's essentially a collective agreement of value within a small community that is reinforced by MTG continuing to stand the test of time. It has no shortage of volatility of course but it is interesting, a potential case-study subject on how humans often ascribe value to non-practical items, a practice that's existed since caveman times.

Yeah, that's why I don't collect sealed product anymore. It's too much to store it. The non-bulk cards in my raw cards collection alone fills my entire safe, so there's no room for anything else. And my bulk fills an entire closet - I can't store sealed product without significant cost for storage, so I just can't do it right now.

As an lgs owner, I can appreciate Mr. Taco's relationship with cardboard. The moment you make your passion a business, the less 'fun' you have with it. I'm surrounded by games all day and play very little of anything anymore. I've stopped playing Magic, play maybe 3-4 tabletop games a month. The passion is certainly still there, but it's in a business context now.

I think it’s all about liquidity. I have a tonne of cardboard stuff but selling it is 100% harder than stocks, crypto and there’s loads more ways to get scammed. For example there are 3 LGSs within 150 miles of me and none of them buy collections… Rudy is clever as he built a fan base using KZfaq and Patreon that he has good exit liquidity with. Unless you have a good exit strategy CCGs are not a good investment.

You keep telling yourself "Damn doing something you really love, that must be sick". Then you realize although it is nice to work on something you were always passionate about, you never feel the same about said passion when it becomes a job. Interesting this applies to big Magic investors also. Interesting video. Thanks for the content.

Hey Rudy, what's your comment on the recent Pokemon cards stolen from the plant story circulating on TikTok? Supposedly, someone was trying to sell about a million worth of select cards from the last two sets that were stolen from the factory and not put into circulation. Will this hurt the value of the sealed product? Is the story even true, or is it just nonsense put out to hurt the value of stored sealed product?
@seancunningham9681
@seancunningham9681 Жыл бұрын
the sealed product taken from the factory floor was seized by the police and returned to the PCI during late 21/early 22 and destroyed. Pokémon hired a private investigator and put an NDA on it to stop consumer confidence going down it leaked only recently. its believed that these cards didn't effect the overall numbers of SR/AA as they were most likely marked as manufacturing faults/ duds and taken off the line and reprinted however pokemon needs to up security at facilities because hiring someone as a manufacturer and having them steal $300 plus moonbreons over and over because there is an opportunity for massive profits . multiple hiring posts were put out so i believe they caught the individuals involved. rattle pokemon had a video on this.

I'm a disabled veteran so I am fortunate to be able to play CCGs and also make money off them. It is very hard not opening. I've got over 8k in Pokemon and MTG sealed product. I've been selling singles from my poke collection heavily for a few months now and a little from my mtg ( I actually play MTG so all the cards are still children's game pieces Lol) and I find it enjoyable to buy lots and break them up all the while grabbing a few here and there for my collection. I'm starting to move some of the sealed product because like you said the funds I make selling that, I'll be able to roll back into my business to make exponentially more money than if I waited 5 more years for the sealed to mature. I've not lost money but on average I've gained 4-5x the sealed value over the 5 years. Great advice man.

I keep the most valuable boxes at my residence but for the majority of it take it back home to your parents home or close relative and keep it there. I have an entire empty room at a relatives house I store sealed product in and take whatever i accrue in between visits back with me when i visit for storage at my relatives house.

IDK about storage units. Make it discreet and select many layers of obscurity. Say rent a few lockers to diverse if one is broken into. The one I checked out, they leave their building door open (just a gated off courtyard) and then your only physical lock is the padlock you put on the storage unit. Each unit has a little alarm system but its something you can bypass if you are taking the time to case the place. The thing is that I dont believe this to be too atypical. What prevents you from renting a locker in this building and then your break into a high value locker? Hence its important to have obscurity be your highest metric (don’t look too organised and very much hide that these are collectables being stored).

Collectibles have almost zero chance of out performing traditional investments in the long term. In fact, they are completely unsuitable for use as investments. If you buy them, it should be because you enjoy doing so or because you’re creating an alternative to simply holding cash. Of course now that interest rates have begun to move upwards even holding cash can get you 4.7% at almost no risk. You should think of buying collectibles the way you might think of putting down some money on blackjack. You might make some money. You might lose some money. Presumably you’re going to have a little bit of fun in the process. But only a great fool would actually expect to make a large amount of money doing it.
