Here is the first in a series of studies on idea of death, afterlife, and the future in the ancient Western world--The Ancient Hebrew View.
Here is the link for a PDF of article I mention in the video that I am asking you all to at least begin reading. Enjoy!!

Hey everyone, I wanted to clarify, as I can see many are not getting this...this series has NOTHING to do with what I believe, you might believe, or even should believe. I am a historian of religions, not a theologian--the main thing I deal with is the "history of ideas." That history is what it is. It is really ignorant for someone to say--Hey, Tabor's video is "false," unless that person is thinking I got some facts wrong--which I am quite certain I did not...And if so I would be glad to correct. The whole series is the same...we are looking at what these periods and cultures BELIEVED...it is called "education." Enjoy! P.S. At the end of the lecture I said the Hebrew view might be seen as depressing--and that was my intention. Let me explain briefly. In this Biblical view death is DEATH--not life. It is terminal, for all--the small and the great. It is the great "equalizer." There is nothing about judgement, heaven, hell...these ideas come in much later. To really understand the Hebrew view of things, one has to realize that--so that eternal life is a gift, something allowed by the Creator, not something inherent in the creation of humankind--even in the image of God. This was the view of Abraham, Moses, all the Prophets. It is stark, realistic, and death is an absolute REVERSAL of Genesis 2:6. Without that perception, the later views of resurrection of the DEAD...make no sense. We will cover this in detail but I wanted to offer this very brief explanation here. Another, P.S. Please hold your horses on the full Hebrew view as it unfolds. Of course I know about Enoch and Elijah, as well as the seance from the medium of Endor...and Job's wish for a "Redeemer," but all of this is coming as we delve into things more fully--and include later texts. What I presented in this video was the fundamental ground work and concepts of death and Sheol.

Dr. Tabor, there are many foreign bots, and critics, and especially critical are people without the prerequisite knowledge of how education works. I absolutely appreciate the wonderful scholarship you share with those of us who DO understand and appreciate your expertise. I was unable to take classes from you as my Prof, yet I know a great one when I hear a lecture. I’ve had some extraordinary Professors of history, and you are extremely professional in how you teach ABOUT religion…..a very delicate subject indeed. Therein lies the distinction in simple terms. Teaching religion in a seminary is much different than teaching about a particular religion in its historical context. Please don’t be deterred from continuing this wonderful and intellectually inspiring lecture series. I am truly grateful to you. Thank you ever so much. 🤓

What Drs might call education, KGB would call demoralization. Influencing conclusions with truth mixed with error is far from education, if Truth is the objective prize! Science so called, with philosophy and vain deceit, carry a plausible deniability that apparently absolves the teacher of all liability if "mistakes" are made inadvertantly. Separated by a category of learning that grees you of Paul's warning. If you or any man or Angel teach any other truth than his, let him be anathama. The rich man of earthy wisdom, ready to go to Abraham's Bosem, but where will he actually end up?

@@3r2w1c Time has already told the story. Jesus said the Kingdom of God was at hand and would arrive during the lifetime of his disciples. He was wrong. As for this video, it’s about what the Old Testament actually said and how it was understood in it’s day, and not how it’s seen through the eyes of modern Christianity. I know from listening to a few rabbis talk that what Dr. Tabor is talking about is pretty much in agreement.

we have all sinned, and broken God’s law (the Ten Commandments). When a person breaks the law, they are then considered a criminal, and to bring justice, the judge must sentence/judge them according to their wrongdoings. No matter how big or small the crime, a person who breaks the law is a criminal, and are not judged by their good deeds but by what they have done wrong. For example; a m**der cannot say “I donated millions of dollars to an orphanage, you should let me go, look at all the good I’ve done.” Criminals are only judged for their wrongdoing, to let them go because of the “good” that they’ve done would be unjust. So those who have broken God’s law will be judged for their lawlessness, not the good that they’ve done. Since we have all sinned, we must be punished so that justice may take place. But if someone pays the fine for the crime we have committed we can legally walk free. Jesus took the punishment of sin, being innocent, so that all who repent of their sins and put their faith in Him may be saved. He essentially took our punishment so that we could walk free, he paid our debt. But one can accept or deny for someone to pay their fine, in like manner one can accept or deny this gift from God. If you repent of your sin (turn from it) and put your faith in Jesus, you will be saved.

Look up Delores Cannon.... she sais there is no wright or wrong, basically we are all part of an experiment that we incarnated on earth as part of an experiment that nobody knew how it was going to play out.... also ive seen other videos that say not to go into the light which is a false light trap and weve had many lifetimes before this. Some even belive we are god and we are immortal souls. We can also create avatars that our soul can connect to and go into the universe...this earth is just a school to learn how to create.... look up god meditation. Also they say the universe has 11 dimmensions and different levels. Ive also seen videos about ndes where people say they met god and they said that religions are all man made. Alot of people are waking up and soon we will be immortal. Time is an illusion and thid 3rd dimmension is just a simulation.

WOW, Praise Jesus you were sent back and have recovered to share your testimony!!! God is so incredibly good and amazing!!! I’ve experienced so many, many miracles in the last roughly six years, it’s really astonishing!!! It all began when I was awakened in the very early morning hours and literally heard the LORD say, “BEHOLD I COME QUICKLY”!!! My entire body was instantly lit up with energy and goosebumps from head to toe, I was SHOCKED and overwhelmed with His LOVE!!! It’s been almost nonstop since that morning!!! Soon after, I read in God’s Word that in the last days, just before the END JUDGMENTS, God will pour out His Spirit on ALL FLESH, He will give dreams and visions to His people and His people will begin to prophesy, absolutely utterly amazing…and I didn’t know any of this UNTIL it began happening to me, and trust me, I’m absolutely no one special!!! GOD IS SO GOOD!!! JESUS IS COMING SO VERY VERY VERY SOON!!! Have you read the Bible yet? Please ignore all these people who think they know it all and are mostly all wrong about everything, and just simply read God’s Word for yourself. I sincerely recommend asking Holy Spirit to help you and bless you with wisdom and understanding every single time you open your Bible…doing this has helped me understand His Word so much more. Once we’re saved, Jesus wants only to have a beautiful, constant, extremely close personal relationship with us. He’s truly my best friend, and though I formally pray often, I’m continually just talking to Him. Anyway, your comment touched me and I just wanted to respond to you! I pray you are blessed always, my love and prayers are with you!!!🕊✝️💞

Great video. One of the amazing things about KZfaq video watchers is that some of them just cannot understand the concept of teaching about the history of what people believed. They apparently live in a box with limited viewing capabilities and a recording that says, "If the video teaches something you don't believe, it must be wrong, and your job is to set the presenter straight." You may as well just make a copy of your explanation of the video and automatically post it in every description. Good luck with getting them to "Get It'. They just don't seem to be able to do that. The rest of us are on board and are learning much from your presentations. Thanks for all you do.

I could see the firmament, and it was filled with luminous stars, but they were underneath the firmament everything else above was liquid. Then there were these two gigantic mountains on each side, holding our plane✝️ in between. Underneath the flat desk there was darkness, and it was the shape of an ice cream cone... it basically looks like the shape of a tornado.... there are no words that can describe the feeling or the colors at which point I was pulled back in and woke up in recovery... I tried sharing this with my children five years ago, and they thought I was crazy and have never heard of a flat earth society either LOL... a few days later, some thing led me to open up the Bible, and I started reading the book of Genesis... it was right there, and God separated the waters from the waters. Dr Tabor, I have often and many times attempted to inform/explain the afterlife to Chtistians/friends, but they rejected me, they simply cannot let go of an immortal soul. I actually had a friend who wanted/prayed to die so she could go be with the Lord! I tried to tell her in the nicest way possible that we must wait of the return of Christ. She stated what I said was an irrelevant controversy. She was a super spiritul person. Alas, she did finally will her death. I believe the teaching of an immortal soul is very dangerous, and the churches are doing the laity a great injustice by such fale teaching.

Great video thank you. I came across this and found it interesting because of "sheol" as I have "died" twice in this life and come back. The second time I remember the entire experience and there was a void where there was a sort of judgement. No external being but just judgement of self I suppose. Before I "died" I felt it coming for me and even started preparing myself.. At first there was immense pain, an intense piercing sound that was tearing me apart from the inside but I had no body. I was being pulled down backwards into the pit. It was hell, that is hell. Perpetuating and ever increasing pain torment and torture. I surrendered to it and it ended. Once there in the pit I call it the void there was nothing, absolutely nothing, no god, spirit or others. Then you're reminded of the guilt and shame you hold. Cutting to the end of that specific experience I came back, I do not know why but when I came back my memory was almost gone. I recognised people but didn't know who they were. It really changed me that much I moved thousands of kilometres away and started a new life.. at 25. First "death" was at 5 years.

Even Paul said that he was the "chief among sinners", that is to say that he believed himself to be a terrible person, and the only good thing about him was that Jesus redeemed him and saved him from having to pay for all the evil that he did in his life. He delights in eternal life because it means he gets to be with Jesus forever, not that he gets to just live forever and do whatever he wants. Jesus wants you to live with him forever, too. Dr. Tabor, That was one of the best and most accurate explanations of the ancient Hebrew view of death that I’ve seen from someone that wasn’t a JW. 😂Impressed that you brought out Ecclesiastes chapter 3 which most Christians or Jews either completely ignore or don’t even know it exists. We all share but one spirit or breath of life and there is no superiority of man over beast for they all die the exact same way, they simply return to the dust. The hope of a resurrection however is held out in the book of Job here; “If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service Until my relief comes. 15 You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands.”-Job 14:14-15 The idea of soul sleep, as presented in the Hebrew scriptures, is quite clear and it’s even repeated by Jesus when he discusses the death of Lazarus and likens his death to that of sleep from which he was going to awaken him. I didn’t hold out much hope that you were going to get this right since the predominant view is so often regurgitated without thought. I was pleasantly surprised!

There's an even more ancient view called the pre-religion time, in which people, Followers of Horus, practiced ascension using the empty sarcophagi that were not meant for mummies but sensory deprivation.. Seems it was what, dimension-hopping or really ascension into heaven? They practiced and taught it for about 30 millennia until recently; a ceremony is depicted in the Kolbrin Bible.

I have a question which also fits to the topic and cant find an answer. I am currently researching as a layman what first Christians believed about Jesus resurrection and many early sources point to a spiritual resurrection, not a bodily like Lazarus. So here i found a quote of Jerome about the Ebionites. He says in one translation that they believed Jesus "ascended" to heaven, no resurrection mentioned. But other translations say that he was "rose again" instead of "ascended". I dont know Latin or Greek and i am little bit confused about the translation. Maybe someone can help me. Here is the quote: Jerome In his Epistle 75, to Augustine, he said: "What shall I say of the Ebionites who pretend to be Christians? To-day there still exists among the Jews in all the synagogues of the East a heresy which is called that of the Minæans, and which is still condemned by the Pharisees; [its followers] are ordinarily called 'Nasarenes'; they believe that Christ, the son of God, was born of the Virgin Mary, and they hold him to be the one who *suffered under Pontius Pilate and ascended to heaven,* and in whom we also believe. But while they pretend to be both Jews and Christians, they are neither" Here is the other translation:" The adherents to this sect are known commonly as Nazarenes; they believe in Christ the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary; and they say that He who suffered under Pontius Pilate *and rose again,* is the same as the one in whom we believe."

Why are all the craters on the moon round. Every impact happened at a 90 degree angle to the surface. None came in at an angle and caused an oblong shaped crater. Which raises the question, if the pictures of the lunar lander are authentic, and it used a powerful rocket to land softly on the dust covered surface, where is the blast crater from the rocket? No dust on anything. Just gold foil and cardboard and probably staples if you look critically. Asking the right questions is impossible for those who have believed a lie. The space suits won't fit out the door of the lander and there is no place to store them in the tiny space inside. So what's the only conclusion? When you eliminate every possibility, whatever is left, no matter how unlikely, must be the truth. No man has ascended into heaven except Jesus Christ. That's the Gospel of those who swear by the God of Truth!

Because if you are immortal and you Sin , you become completely Evil, much like Satan and his friends.... I don't know , but I don't think Yah would want that. Nevertheless, He HAD TO present Both options, good and bad, to give Adam the Choice. Jesus Christ, Messiah, later became the Tree of Life. I use the title ''Lord'' with my religious family and friends, because they assume that my understanding of the Lord is the same as theirs. This avoids the unpleasantness of ''my Lord'' versus your ''Lord.'' I am a firm believer in a *''First Cause Creator''* - outside of traditional religions. Our precisely created, fine-tuned, amazingly beautiful Universe/Earth, along with my personal awareness of it all, is utterly Miraculous to me. I don't know the ultimate purpose of this Creation, or why humans are allowed to be so extremely hateful and destructive toward other humans. Enlightened folks would like to see Authentic JUSTICE, in this world - on behalf of victims - against evil-doers. Me too, but I'm not holding my breath.

@@dirtypickle77 That's not actually true, though. That stuff about how close the Earth is to the sun, etc. is an apologist canard. The Earth's distance from the sun is widely variable and not within any remarkable parameters. This is not a valid argument anyway. Of course life follows the ordinary laws of physics. Why is that amazing? I've never understood the thinking behind "design" arguments. Of course life conforms to physical laws. Why would it NOT? I think there is an assumption behind teleological arguments that humans have some special significance in the universe. If things were different humans wouldn't exist. But so what if humans never ? Humans have not existed for almost the entire history of the universe anyway. In astronomical terms, we just got here a second ago and we'll probably be gone in an another one and the universe will never care about a single one of us anymore than it cares about a single bacterium. The human gut is very hospitable to certain bacteria. How do we know that humans were not created simply to provide environments and food sources for gut bacteria? After all, the human gut is perfectly designed for gut bacteria.

The truth can't be debunked, but only misinterpreted. For example, if you were to look down an ongoing hallway, hold a straight edge between your vision and the edge where floor meets wall and notice it's a straight line. Doing the same with where ceiling meets wall, with both lines being straight and also merge toward eachother, it can be concluded that the straight lines would appear to merge to a point if the hallway continued. The point would be at a specific distance, because those straight lines don't bend into a tunnel like infinite hole, they merge and cut eachother off. This demonstrates that we can only see so far.. Removing the walls, if the floor and ceiling continued in all directions outward, the floor and ceiling will appear to meet at a 360⁰ line around the viewer rather than a point. A horizon at a specific distance. This distance to the horizon while viewed on a flat plane standing 6' off the ground (average height) can be measured. Take a tape measure and lay it long ways on the floor down a straight and square hallway at the foot of a leveled camera 6 feet from the ground, and preferably, at least 6 feet from the ceiling. Take a picture. Overlay a ruler on top of the picture along side the tape measure in the picture on the floor and measure the rate at which the floor appears to rise. It can be calculated how far the horizon should appear on a flat surface. Yet, many believe no such horizon should exist but on a sphere. When it is said that "we can't see forever, so it's not flat" or "a horizon wouldn't exist on a flat earth", that is misunderstanding of the truth, what we actually see. The argument discredits the very thing that is being argue for. What we can measure and the distance we can see on a flat surface matches what we actually see over a dry flat land. When looking over water, there's typically moisture in the air which magnifies the horizon. Another interesting fact is that if you put an air bubble and a dense object in a tube of water, elevate the tube, turn the tube upside down so that the air bubble begins to rise and the object sinks, release the tube, and the air bubble and object cease to move within reference to the tube. This demonstrates that there is a set "0" to displacement and that motionlessness is during free fall. This means that things don't accelerate downward, but decelerate to a "0". It's not a coincidence that the air bubble and object stop moving in reference to the tube during free fall. Yet, the well established scientific community, or so called, will have you believe the contrary. They will have you believe there's acceleration. However, the only time you will see the object appear to slowly begin sinking and the air bubble slowly appear to rise, which will still be at a consistent speed without acceleration, is when the tube reaches its maximum velocity and encounters drag from the wind hitting the exterior of the tube. The truth has been intentionally eroded by the so called science community in order to establish stumbling blocks across nations making it easier to subject people, as it is educated that you are insignificant, unintentional and without purpose. There is a lot more to all of this. 90% of the media is owned by 6 organizations and they all share the same narrative based science that requires beliefs to accept. It boils down to beliefs. There are a lot of lies that a lot of people believe.
@cidguy
@cidguy Жыл бұрын
To add; it's established that looking down a hypothetically infinite straight hallway gives the appearance of a point at a specific distance. Removing the walls gives the appearance of a horizon at a specific distance. Removing the ceiling will give 2 half circles, 1 being 6 feet below the viewer and the other being opened above the viewer. This would most likely be the cause of why things appear cut off at the bottom when viewed from a distance. This is demonstrated over a flat and level parking lot with the viewer very close to the ground as someone walked away. Their feet disappeared first, then their legs, on a flat surface. Another argument is the horizon appearing to drop by a degree when ascending to great heights. Although I've never measured this, I speculate that the reason for this argument can be that the same results should appear on a flat surface with atmosphere. As ascending to great heights, the viewer will be looking through more atmosphere. The higher the viewer, the more air between the viewe and the horizon. This will obscure a true horizon, causing the horizon to appear slightly lower. Why such deceptive arguments and tactics? Another visual fact is that it should be expected to see further on a flat surface when ascending towards an opened sky away from the ground. It can be measured that, when 6 feet from the ground on a constructed flat floor below ones feet, and ceiling above ones head, that the ceiling and floor are straight by using a straight edge on the picture of the hallway. The floor and ceiling merge at a specific distance. So, make the dimensions of the hallway bigger. A hypothetical 40 foot ceiling and you're 20 feet from the ground. Put the tape measure on the ground again. Take a picture. Measure the rate at which the floor appears to rise. It's a much slower rate than when being 6 feet from the ground. The horizon is much further while on a flat surface and ascending. The horizon is still a specific distance on a flat surface.

Consciousness is proven to be entirely an emergent property of the physical brain. All sensory perception, memory, emotion and cognition happens in the brain and we know what parts of the brain do what. We know that injuries to those parts of the brain cause changes to those parts of consciousness and personality. without senses, memory., emotion or cognition, what exactly would be surviving death? what makes it "you?" When the brain dies, consciousness cease to be produced. It doesn't go anywhere, anymore than the light from a light bulb goes anywhere after the bulb burns out. The bulb just isn't producing any more light. The brain is not producing any more consciousness.
