It's a shame Helen and Madeline never learned that lesson. They chased after their youths and paid a steep price.

I believe that they had youth. That's why the woman who gave them the potion told them to take care of their bodies. Unfortunately, they didn't listen and hurt each other, destroying their bodies in the process.

@@rickrollrizal2747 That's exactly what I meant. You can't escape physical damage forever. If your body is dead to begin with, it will never heal even the smallest scratch. Imagine now a thousand years of accidental minor injuries which would be impossible to cure. Sooner or later, before or during the Sun's red giant phase, you would end up crippled to the point you would prefer death than an eternity of agony. Now imagine being a cloud of atoms waiting 10^10^100 years before Heat Death sets in and every single bit of matter decays. What happened in the movie is just a sped-up lapse of the inevitable result.

@@rickrollrizal2747 just to clarify: as far as i recall, he could only 'repair' their bodies insofar as being a personal handyman to manually slow the decay of a rotting corpse over a few decades with ducktape and glue -- not repair as in 'magically good as new'. He would be fine indefinitely as long as he stayed alive -- but the bodies of the two women were already dead and needed constant, increasing amounts of upkeep

He made the right choice. Lisle warned Ernest earlier the consequences of taking the potion. She told him that he could continue being a plastic surgeon for 10 years of unchanged youth and vigor, but after that, he must disappear forever and keep the secret of her potion safe. The reason Lisle warned Ernest earlier was because she saw he wasn't like those narcissists that she's had to deal with in the past who only wanted to have their youths back: examples being Helen and Madeline. He saw the consequences of taking that potion right away. By drinking it, he'd not only be immortal, but also be bound to Helen and Madeline forever doing maintenance work on them. That isn't the life for Ernest and in some ways, Lisle did save him from making that mistake That's why after escaping Ernest resolved to leave Helen and Madeline, retake his life and become a better person. He completed his mission through his family and living his best years helping others. Ernest got the better end of life, while Helen and Madeline are forever stuck rotting away and doing their own maintenance work.

Live forever boring, watching his loved ones die around him, being a prisoner by these two crazy ladies, dissapearing after 10 years only to keep Lisle's secret safe. I think Ernest made the right choice.

If he drank it and then died, he would have to forever be doing work on himself while his body rots from the deadly fall, a zombie like Madeline and Helen.
