Marnie would have NEVER gotten me up that mountain side. I have no real hiking or rock climbing experience but I watch and read a lot about it. As someone terrified of heights, I would have insisted on turning back. The most important thing about venturing into the wilderness is to KNOW YOUR LIMITS. Never count on someone to know it for you. I'm happy these women made it out alive. I've been looking for this episode!

Exactly! I've been in some less pleasant situations in the wilderness (lapland/very northern finland), during winter) and I hike alone. Though, luckily I know not to take chance - so I stopped and turned around before it went from "unpleasant and a bit risky" to being "down right dangerous and reckless". I would never risk my life - and most certainly not someone else's life like this! I would never forgive myself if someone I brought got severely hurt or lost their life because of me/my poor decisions 😢

As an avid hiker, backpacker and rock scrambler, I can't even fathom attemrping to rock scramble with heavy packs on! Also, just because it is summer, always need warm clothes in the high mountains. @@bargeld09 this was not mountain climbing. This was a backpack trip that was supposed to follow an already established trail. Rather than just admit it was a wash and turn around, she decided to rock scramble with a newbie and heavy packs. Always beware of who you follow and what their motive are my friend and I had a desire to sky dive,we went to a local small airport and met a guy who was charging 150 dollars a jump using his parachutes and jumping instructions, we were chutted up waiting for the plane to take us aloft as a jump master happened by and demanded to see the condition of the parachutes.Our instructor was forced to unroll the chutes and to our bewilderment they 50 to 100 hand sewn patches on them plus advanced stage of dry rot and with little effort he put his hand right through the canopy material saying these chutes haven't been used in years, the jump master quipped I need not have to tell you what would've happened.A few years later I heard the same guy sent a man and woman pummeling to they're deaths. It doesn’t take much aside from a set of eyes to know the New Zealand mountains are gonna be hard. She was trying to help a friend get through a hard personal issue the way SHE knew how.. you fight a mountain and win and everything else feels insignificant for a while and sue wanted her buddy to feel that. Her intentions were pure and kind. Another point though.. Marni should have brought them crampons and harnesses and rope just in case. And if Sonja had no harness experience they shoulda done a different hike. But, that’s all semantics. Bottom line, she risked her life to give her friend an experience. You don’t get it til you’ve climbed like this.. it really is pretty magical. Just looks scary and dumb though if you’re not into mountaineering and I can see that.

@@Errcyco well she wasn’t prepared, but that was understandable (the bad weather wasn’t expected so soon), but what I found particularly bad was once they came across that icy mountain and realized they couldn’t surmount, that was the beginning of the end. Everytime they came up against a snag, she kept coming up with a more perilous way to go around. Her friend was not experienced and it was definitely the wrong move to make. They were off the beaten trail, not having the proper equipment or food supplies with dangerous weather on the horizon. Her intentions may have been good but they were definitely not smart and could’ve been the death of them.

Yes! So reckless! She wasn't familiar enough with the mountain to make that climb and still refused to head back. Even on an easy day hike in Tasmania _in the summer_ I used to take a thick jumper, jacket and poncho. For a 3-dayer one should at least take a space blanket and PLB, notify people of your exact route, sign in everywhere you can and don't make stupid decisions. And yes, believe the weather forecasts, because in Tas and NZ it can change within 15 mins and the temp can plummet by 20C very quickly.

Extremely bad judgment on Marni's part to take a beginner on a climb like that. Heavy packs that throw of your center of balance, no safety gear, and a climb almost straight up a rock wall. On top of that, she knew there was a storm coming. She came very close to killing both of them. I wouldn't trust her to babysit my hamster.

What is the point of checking the weather forecast if you're going to ignore it? 🙄 Then, for that lady to say she's an "experienced climber", but chooses to not bring proper gear, even ropes, there's gotta be something not right in her head🤯

I’m not her but I think I know what she was thinking. I sucked at climbing and hiking til one bad stretch on the AT. I was 13 and had no choice but to hike through a blizzard to shelter. I was convinced I was dead.. at some point, I realized this and it pissed me off. All the things that were impossible, were now possible. I climbed and fought and was pissed off and I made it. Had it been a nice sunny day I’d have left that trip with no memory of it. I’d have learned nothing about myself. So I see the logic, but Marni missed a key point. That’s a choice YOU make personally.. that’s not a choice you make for a friend having a hard time. She needed a friend to listen, not get her killed. Still, the intention was kind. Just done poorly.

I'm not totally defending her decision because it wasn't the smartest decision she could have made, but, a bit in her defense, I don't think she was counting on having to do the degree of climbing they had to do. The huge ice formation in summer surprised her, and they were climbing their way around it. The ice wasn't expected to be there. Honestly, they should have just scrapped their plans and went somewhere else

Why are none of these hikers never have emergency blankets with them? It would keep them dry, warmer, more visible, can be used to catch water, scare of predators etc. and they weigh next to nothing. Climbing in these hiking shoes is mad too, not sure if it’s they actually wore these but these are not shoes to go up steep cliffs, ever.

Well, they weren't planning on going climbing, until they met that ice-fall and decided to go up instead of back, so the hiking shoes were good. Totally agree with you about the space blanket. They can also be used to reflect the sun back to a helicopter, so you can be seen. The most sensible thing to take would be a PLB (personal locator beacon).

One thing I love so much about Christmas even though unfortunately I grew up in a religious environment they didn’t allow me to celebrate it which is really awful, but it is what it is when I finally started to celebrate it I absolutely adore. You could just forget all the past and just start over and appreciate the simple things which is just basic I don’t know like I don’t know what I’m talking about but I experienced only the second Christmas that I’ve ever experienced to me. It seems that people can just put aside their differences and love and I think it’s beautiful.
@HobbyOrganist

christmas is a farce anyway, everyone and their dog knows the birth date is false, and the REASON Dec 25 was chosen was to subvert and stomp on the pagan's much older celebration of YULE and the return the the SUN with longer days. When you research the history you learn the pagans believed the sun god was dying- the 3 shortest days of the year around Dec 21 and then was reborn 3 days later when they noticed the days were getting longer and they celebrated the return/rebirth of the sun that they knew all life depended on. The xtians didnt and wouldnt accept anyone believing anything other than what they forced them to believe, so they took over Yule/solstice AND Eastre/Ostara- yet another PAGAN celebration of the fertility godDESS whose symbol was the rabbit and the egg.

It's quite bad when the best decisions made were keeping each other warm through body heat, talking each other's ears off, and beating each other up to stay awake. God took pity on them that day. If people don't listen and empathize with one another more often, we might all end up on a ledge, so to speak. I know the saying "we're all in this together" has been spoken to death, but I really mean it. It's not some silly, meaningless political slogan, but about being human toward one another again, seeing us for who we are, gently but firming instructing people in what ways they may be deficient, encouraging during times of strength and weakness, and Truly Loving one another. Many blessings to you.

When I was much younger, I did a mountain climbing course at a local Italian Alpine Club (Clup Alpino Italiano). The first things that you learn are how to be safe all the time with ropes, gears, climbing vests and so on. I was one of the very few girls who climbed and thoroughly enjoyed it. Three boys about my age, Marco, Massimo and Stefano, used to climb with me and though Marco was totally reckless, he never did that when we were climbing together. Massimo and Stefano were older than Marco and I and always very careful about our safety. All of them used to study the climbing route before actually climbing it and always had extra tools with them in case of need. However, Marco, the strongest and youngest climber, was often showing off his skills and once he went to do a Dolomite route with an inexperienced climber who fell while crossing a traverse (horizontal climbing route, the most dangerous) damaged his spine and ended up on a wheelchair. At the same time, Massimo's wife got pregnant and gradually we all lost our interest in climbing mountains. I often found myself in points that scared the shit out of me. Once I stayed frozen in a passage that involved a very technically difficult passage in a horizontal area, a crossing, for almost 45 minutes. Luckily, I managed to get out of that area skillfully though fear makes your muscles trembles and loose their strenght. Despite everything, my friends never took me to routes beyond my capacity that's why I believe that Marnie probably climbed a lot by herself but was in no way an expert climber! 💖😁😘

When you really think about these situations that for a lack of better words are extremely stupid and could be avoided, it kind of makes us wonder what these people are running from in their lives. I don't have or have never had the desire to disappear on a middle of nowhere backwoods hike completely unprepared. I love my family and would never want them to worry about me being lost or dead. These people on this show put themselves in these life threatening situations by not being prepared and not having the right survival gear. When we go snowmobiling in the mountains, every member in our group gives a time we're departing, and when we're returning from our ride each day to our wives. We wear avalanche packs, carry a honing beacon and carry a satellite phone.
