And midwives used to stretch the perineum open to try to get the baby to birth faster. They also pushed down hard on the abdomen. They did lots of damage.

My oldest was born in 1989 and I didn't go to Lamaze but I wanted a natural childbirth and I didn't want Demerol or an epidural. Ohhh it was brutal and I had very hard contractions but they were about 5 to 6 minutes apart and when I have them they were excruciating. The doctors gave me pitocin to make my contractions stronger together but that stuff is the devil because it's not controllable. Once they put that in your IV you can be having super strong contractions like I was and it will make them closer together but it will also make the contractions ten times worse. I don't think doctors should give that at all and I think they should just let women progress normally.

At least they didn't have to fork over thousands of dollars just to bury somebody. the average funeral now cost a minimum of $10,000. back then most people just buried their dead on their property. It was no big deal. Funeral homes act like factories. Until the day of your loved one's funeral, you are treated like royalty. Once the bill is paid and the funeral is over, they act like they never knew you.

Don't have a funeral. No one has to have a funeral. Or be embalmed, or buy a plot, or stone marker. Check the laws of your state. There is natural burial where all you do is get wrapped in a natural fiber shroud and get put in a hole to decompose. Direct cremation doesn't require a casket or other nonsense either.

Watching this reminds me of Shakespeare's Halmet were the king's ghost roams about saying that he is in purgatory because he died with all his sins with him. Moreover, this is the reason Halmet does not kill Claudius because he is praying because this will mean he will go to heaven.

As my wife's old gynecologist once remarked "if men had babies, every family would have one child; and abortion would be freely available"
@songsofthecentury3909

And the gynecologist was a woman, even though it's an Obstetrician who deals with childbirth. I wonder if women would do the really horrible jobs like soldiers, chefs in large numbers. Women choose easy jobs like secretary, nurse or teacher. Imagine the pain a soldier goes through when his leg is blown off.

@DelBluenose80 you've got to be kidding me? you must be trolling. the contractions of birth/ the actual delivery can be excuriating. some woman have easier labours than others. some women endure labour for days.

Thank God I was only in labor with my first child for about nine and a half hours but I was three synonyms for 10 days before I even went into labor but my labor was miserable. I ended up having a c-section because she got stuck in my pelvis and I had to wait two hours for a C-section. I think all together my labor was about 10 hours but the last two hours was just waiting for a C-section. My son was a vaginal birth after a cesarean and since I fully dilated with my daughter I went into labor two weeks early and I was once in them and in 40 minutes I was fully dilated and I barely felt anything except my low back was really sore. My mother was in labor with me for 27 hours in 1967 and she said they knocked her out.

I partially disagree. I do think that people 500 years from now WILL think we have lower forms of sanitation but modern medicine is still no laughing matter. In developed countries the hospitals are respectable and cure almost all illnesses.

'They would have had someone in their family die fairly often.' I just hate when my family member dies often. Just die once and be done with it, already! If you go by the Bible, then Heaven and Hell are empty at the moment. The Bible says that on Judgment Day, God would decide who goes where. Now, I am not the most observant person but I'm fairly sure I would notice the dead rising from their graves to stand before a Divine Being for judgment. Thankfully, I am a Pagan so I don't worry about it.

Interesting because I'm a Christian but I'm not radical about it and I consider myself far more spiritual and strong in faith. I believe in God as being something within the universe and something far bigger than we get ever comprehend. I've nearly died and practically did from sepsis & kidney failure; and again being pregnant and having my heart fail. It's a really weird feeling because I know with sepsis I was in excruciating pain but at the same time I was so sick I was in a stance like I didn't care about whatever else was going on.. when my heart-failed, everything went black and then when I woke up everything around me was white.

Of course the Protestants understood God's Gospel of Salvation....none of that "doing battle" on the deathbed nonsense. Prorestants believe all you have to do is BELIEVE on Christ's Work ALONE on the cross! And that, is the Gospel. Edward VI, from my assesment of his life, and his death-bed prayer-the young king had to have been saved. Thank God for that....

@@dwightschrute900 I agree with you up until the Edward VI part of your comment. I have since returned back to my Catholic Faith. I won't go so far as to say that Edward VI is not in a good place. He was doing what he believed was right, following in his father's footsteps. The truth is that we don't know. I pray God's Mercy on his soul.
