That’s a very common turn to wreck in and that’s a hard bang, glad you’re alright.

Have to go this summer. Great looking track! Lot's of run off area, when I crashed at Westwood between turn 1 and 2 I hit a bunch of rocks and landed in a swamp!

Used to be able to hear Westwood racing from my place in PoCo on weekends when I was in undergrad, just one mountaintop over. You'll like A27. Great track. Just don't get too squirrely in turn 11...

Westwood could be very unforgiving. The hairpin had lots of room but going off in the esses or turn three could be quite the ride.

That exit could use some rumble strips or a bit of run off. Hard enough hit to lose a wheel even. Glad you were okay.

Totally necessary given its a blind crested turn. Rumble with slight run off.

they should move that wall further back and stack tires in front of it. with the blind crest / left hander I'm betting you won't be the last to see some wall action right there. paving more runoff on the right side right after the track, where you went into the dirt a little before the spin, would help also as it'd be easier to keep the car from spinning.

100% agreement on all points. The wall likely won't be moved, but tire bundles could be easily arranged. Widening the exit seems feasible as well.

What would have been the proper way to handle this situation? would letting off the gas do or maybe just drive of the road completely?
@crosswire7777
@crosswire7777 Жыл бұрын
Correct, let off the gas before the apex, and even after, until the weight of the car stabilizer after the crest of the hill. When going over holls, the contact patches of the tires is reduced, making you run wide. If you dial in your speed and turn in points, you can shoot through the turn like the driver was doing. Ultimately it was a gamble towards what couldve been a very good lap time. Anyways much respect for the driver and poster of this video, for sharing this and helping us all learn.

a fraction of a second too early on the throttle. thats what caused the crash, you applied the throttle while the back wheel was still on the grass/dirt. unfortunate

45 seconds in you can tell things are going to go wrong eventually. Insufficient blips on downshift ... it is like pulling the hand brake.

Chris Miles that’s not at all how this happened and this guy is an experienced wheel to wheel racer. That turn is easy to misjudge because of the way your suspension loads and unloads as you go up it. He dropped his rear passenger tire off the track and that was it, it happens there often.

@@seancoakley5371 it does look like it was the engine braking which upset the car. Looks like he was carrying more speed and going wider then he planned so he let off the throttle which immediately caused loss of traction in the rear. Then as soon as the right rear went off track it was too late. Not sure was kind of ecu he is running in the car but it would be nice to program the idle control to open more at higher rpm to reduce the amount of engine braking and keep the car more stable when coming off the throttle.

@@muskytuned I have gone through that very corner about a hundred times there is camber and elevation change that unloads the suspension and unsettles the car. If you are using engine breaking on any track the only ECU you need to change is the one in your head.
@rtarzwell
@rtarzwell 3 жыл бұрын
What really killed me was simply not accepting that it was time to drive straight into the grass after the early apex. I made the mistake of trying to save the corner, so when I had slight left steering input after the right side went off, it was all over but the smashin'.

@@seancoakley5371 I think you missed the point. All vehicles have engine braking when you let off the throttle due to the compression of the engine itself when the throttle is closed. I was simply stating that on some ecus you have the ability to decrease or increase the rate at which the engine decelerates when the throttle is closed. I usually do this by programming the idle air control valve position based on rpm. That way when lifting off throttle especially at high rpm you don't upset the car as much. I understand this is a tricky section of track and wasn't trying to say this would of prevented the incident. I was simply sharing some info

This is a new track? Looks like a track design flaw, probably got short on actually real estate for track length = concrete barriers in between two close opposing sections of track with no where to go but the wall in a bad situation.
@donziperk

Yes this a new track and there is lots of room it on a huge piece of property. There is definitely room there for improvement but otherwise this an outstanding track. It was designed in part by Jacques Villeneuve. Google earth it

The car was, unfortunately, a total loss. The frame under the passenger seat was actually torn apart, so a badly made roll cage might have collapsed. Never get the cheap roll cage!
