I was brought up in Senegal Rd which was where the new Millwall Stadium is now and went to Rotherhithe Junior School so had to walk everyday thru the Bolina arches to get there. I can remember the original Silwood Estate being built, in fact my mum worked in the building site canteen. I was at the ceremony when the foundation stone for the new St. Katherine's church was laid in 1960 as a member of the 4th Bermondsey & Rotherhithe scout group based in the arches in Silwood Street. 1962 we moved to Gillam House where I lived until 1971. 25 years later I revisited the Silwood Estate and could not believe what a slum it had become. Why was that allowed to happen? I returned again in 2012 and the estate was unrecognisable, so much better. I was surprised to see that Richard House is still there and unchanged. Could this be because they were private flats and not council tenants?
@emmaitch3 жыл бұрын
You must remember the Buckinghams and Says from Gillam. The estate was left to rot as the council knew it was replacing it. Yes, Richard House has stood the test of time, though I don't know why.

The silwood means adventure to me. The area it self had a lot of character before they demolished it Iam meaning the bridges, the roads, the old blocks, the garages, the pubs, the people as a child I use to love coming down there. But now it to me just is not the same. Would really like to see a lot more old pics of this area, a lot of memory's!

When these LCC slab blocks are well looked after they can be fantastic places to live...
@emmaitch Жыл бұрын
They also need to be built properly with aged materials. Think of all the 1930s blocks of flats that are still standing solid in Bermondsey, while all the 50s, 60s and 70s estate have rotted away.
