Now I’m definitely late to the party here but I don’t think the example given in this video is actually very good. Here’s why: the statement given says that (assertion) children enjoy learning at academies *because* (reason) academies have a positive effect on their education. While that’s a fine premise to go on, the evidence must demonstrate a causal relationship between the two; it must show that children enjoy academies *for the reason that* they have a positive effect on their education. This is not the case in the example given. The evidence states that 69% of children were satisfied with their classes (not that they enjoyed them) *and* (not because) 73.9% of children thought that academies had a positive effect on grades and abilities. I could also point out that using a 2007 study from Korea also suggests cherry-picked evidence, however that seems nitpicky and is highly context dependent. The main failing of this argument is that it essentially is two assertions followed by evidence of those assertions, following a format more akin to A-A-E-E (Not very pirate like). Identifying a causal relationship is a very powerful statement in a debate, but it must be supported by evidence that proves that relationship.

Actually I also did the same when we had a group debate in our class and I was not aware of it as I was absent, although I could not get an opportunity to keep my point because when my group members had already discussed what each one would say but I came in the last moment and that was the first time I was participating in a debate and I wasn't prepared also , first I heard to all the points my group members said and those who we're against as well and to then I ended up questioning my opposite team otherwise I wouldn't have got marks.

invalid evidence. the face that children were satisfied with their classes doesnt mean there is a positive effect on education but only means that they felt happy.The evidence to prove the assertion should be some surveys about their results in exams or levels of skills that they learnt in academies.

Few pointers. First, CWI is probably a better card format than AREI but whatever works for you. Second, eye contact isn't really important. Third, most impacts should relate to extinction or value to life decreasing.

Claim-Warrant-Impact. Claim is the same as assertion (What they should believe) Warrant - Pretty much the same as reason and evidence combined (Why they should believe it) Impact - The impact on the audience (Why they should care) So, for example you might claim that libraries help kids learn. The warrant might be that studies have shown that kids who visit libraries achieve greater results in academic tests, and that increased reading is good for kids. The impact would be that this would help you, the audience, by increasing the average education of the populace leading to better doctors, better politicians, etc, and that the audience' children would have a better education if taken to libraries. A good argument should have all of these. Often people take an ethical argument and forget to apply a warrant, or a data-based argument and forget to connect it to the audience. I've also seen CWA with impact being replaced by Application (same meaning) and CRI (replacing warrant with reason, but having the same meaning).
@Panic_Pickle
@Panic_Pickle 6 жыл бұрын
In the debating competitions I coach for you will lose points if you don't engage your audience with eye contact, because the audience is less likely to listen to your argument if you don't make eye contact.

Hi, I made another argument. Could you please check if it's alright? Thanks:D Assertion: Children develop social skills. Reason: Academies help in public speaking and boosting confidence. Evidence: Study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future. From an early age, these skills determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up unemployed or addicted. Impact: My argument is.... This means that children tend to develop social skills in an academy. Academies help children to get ready for the future and bring changes in their life in positive ways.
@ReadingPioneers
@ReadingPioneers 4 жыл бұрын
Great argument, but perhaps you need evidence that is more specific to academies providing the public speaking and confidence boost. The studies are correct, but there is no link to academies.

I know it's just an example but a study that asks children how satisfied they are with their education isn't trustworthy. A good study would look at results, not ask a person if they are satisfied especially because most kids don't know squat about what kind of education and how much of it is good for them. My proof? Gender studies.

@ReadingPioneers
@ReadingPioneers 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment^^ The impact is a part of the argument that helps you show the importance of the argument. think of it as the "so what?" part, explaining the severity of the argument. There are different ways to calculate the impact such as how big it is (financial collapse, war), timeframe (when it will happen), and probability (how likely is it to happen). Impacts allow the judge to evaluate which arguments are the strongest in the debate. I hope this helps some, if you have more questions feel free to comment or send me an email: contact@readingpioneers.com

Sorry for the late reply..how was the debate? For future reference, the introduction shouldn't be too long as most debates are timed and the arguments are usually more valuble than the introduction. Would you like me to make another debate video?

Thanks for the input, it's difficult when to add music and when it's okay to hear my(potentially more annoying) voice.

*sigh* Video games don't make kids more violent. That's something someone thought of but didn't get any evidence, and most people who heard it just believed it at face value. Many studies have been conducted regarding the hypothesis, most if not all of them proved that the notion is false.

arguing all children like academies because of a study done by a university from Korea fails to consider cultural factors. Using narrow facts to support a broad argument is not a good argument. ***Mic Drop*** And that's how you discredit a bad argument.
