No more plastic bags at the supermarket, this fold-away tote bag will inside your handbag or glove compartment in the car so you’re never without a bag!
This is a variation of a project from my book, Sew Eco-Friendly.
Sorry I appear to have said I used princess seams, these are French seams!
Materials:
44” x 21” 112cm x fabric
3 x poppers, 1 male and 2 female [or 1 female and 1 male]
Fabric: Grow Where You Are Planted Seeds
From: debbieshoresewing.com
Cut:
2 pieces of fabric each measuring 13" x14.5” [33cm x 37cm]
2 pieces each measuring 5” x 7.5” [12.5cm x 18cm] for the flap, round off the bottom corners
2 pieces each measuring 21” x 4” [53cm x 10cm] for the handles. If you make them
a little shorter you should be able to make the bag from half a yard of fabric.

Love the bag. Plastic bags from the grocery are no longer used. You must bring your own or buy one of theirs. So this is wonderful. Thank you. Love your tutorials! From New York/Pennsylvania USA. I live near the border of NY.

Made 25 bags as a surprise for our Inner Wheel members in Alcester, as it’s our last meeting on Tuesday as the club is closing. I found it easier to press the popper together gently, then use the tool to fasten them properly. At least this way it was less fiddly trying to get gather the fabric up & use the tool to fasten. Each bag different. Thank you Debbie.😊

Your tote bag is lovely. It was interesting the way you stitched the bag, so no open seam on the inside. Also, the way you did the ends of the straps. It look so neat. Thank you very much.

Just made my first one of these (there will be more!) I used a sew on magnetic bag fastener. I think next time I might use velcro dots. And when putting the handles on instead of glue I used a small piece of hemming web which worked really well. Thanks for the demo.

So cute. Looks very simple to make I like the French seam and no lining 🙂🙂 however I've never used the poppers. Looks similar to eyes and noses for stuffed animals. I have lots of those lol I think I'll make this one using sewable velcro I have on hand. Thank you for sharing another great project Debbie ❤️

I thought I had a popper set like yours but it was a nightmare to use. Metal and sharp and I couldn’t always get it to work and when it did it had sharp bits sticking out 😱 I saw how yours were working out and you explained it very well. So I decided to look again and found the right ones. What a difference, so easy to use and stress free 😅 My bags look lovely and people I’ve shown them to love them. Thanks again for sharing 🥰😅🥰

I am looking for a first project for my 10 year old granddaughter who wants me to teach her how to sew. This one looks like a great first project for her. It will also teach her how to do a clean inside seam; what I would call a French seam. We plan to make some Christmas presents for the family. Thanks Debbie.

I think I would use small squares of interfacing to reinforce the popper closures. This would also make a gift bag that would be useful after.

Thank you for this, I have now made 3 and as a beginner I find it an easy make. 2 comments: I'm only using thin cotton (a repurposed sheet) which folds up really well, but I agree it needs some reinforcement behind the press stud fittings on the body of the bag, the first I made and have used to show people the idea is going to tear before too long as the press studs are hard to pull apart. Will try gluing a small piece in place. Secondly, I have found that if I measure and fit where the popper goes on the flap, it is easier simply to use that to make an indentation on the body of the bag front and back, and use that to place the other fitting accurately (maybe I'm just really bad at measuring 🤣). I hope to sell the bags as a fund raiser for a charity we support here in Tenerife. Sorry for the long message and thanks again for all of your wonderful tutorials.

I am a bit late to this party and am making a load of these for a fundraiser. However, the placement of the popper on the back of the bag (for the foldaway) at 7" down from the top of the bag seems to be wrong when I fold three times. Have I got this wrong?
