Deborah Bridges has been a sculptor for 25 years. Two years ago she discovered encaustic painting. Deborah paints with beeswax, damar resin (tree sap), and oils. This video shows aspects of the painting process both on wood panel and ceramic sculpture.

This so beautiful to watch -the beauty of the process and the exquisite result. Inspiring. I have just discovered encaustics and dedicated a space in my studio to learn about it. I'm fascinated and nearly obsessed with it. Thank you for this video which shows just how far reaching a medium it is. You are a wonderful artist!

Thank you everyone for your comments and questions. I am just now finding all your questions, so am a bit late in responding. The oil is vegetable oil and is used for removing the excess oil paint. The oil stick is from R&F encaustic supplies. And when I use wax on the ceramic clay it is always free of any kind of glaze or underglaze. Raw fired clay only. The piece in the video is fired to cone 6.

Hi Deborah, I just wanted to tell you that what you created here is amazing, also love the music you chose for the video. One more thing, I noticed you used wax crayons on the canvas, I don't know if this helps but there is an encaustic paste called Master Paste Original or MPO for short, it spreads really nicely and smoothly and, in my opinion, way more flexible and easier to use than crayons... Anyway keep up your beautiful work!

Your art is breathtaking and the video is a pleasure to watch. Can you tell me how many layers of wax you started with before adding the color to the painting, and did you add any encaustic layers on top of the colored layer? Thank you so much for sharing.

Could you show more or give more information on using Encaustic on sculputure and pottery. I am doing some experimentation in that area. Are there any specific clay bodies you find more accepting to the wax?

Nice work. After you apply the oil paint, what fluid were you using? Linseed oil or some type of cleaner? Thanks!

Do you use a finish of some sort on top of the encaustic wax on your sculpture to protect the surface?
