In this captivating episode of MythBusters, baseball takes centre stage as the team delves into some popular myths surrounding the sport. Joined by legendary pitcher Roger Clemens, the MythBusters All-Stars embark on a baseball special like never before. First up, they tackle the age-old question of whether a corked bat can hit a ball further. With their ingenuity and a batting machine, they put this urban legend to the test. Meanwhile, Carrie, Tory, and Grant investigate the effect of humidity on baseballs. Using a humidor to control humidity levels, they analyse the bounce and distance of dry and humid balls, uncovering surprising results. Can a humid ball go as far as a dry one? The science of baseball is unveiled, and the MythBusters show us the real deal behind the myths.

I don't think it was ever a *_myth_* that sliding into 2nd or 3rd was faster. It's always been understood that the effort to not overrun the base is where the upright option falls down, as it were. Plus sliding has the added advantage of possibly eluding a tag. The only *real* sliding myth that they didn't tackle (maybe they did at another time?). was whether sliding (or actually diving headfirst) into *1st* base is faster, a base you *can* overrun. That's been mostly busted, but with a few anomalies.

I love and miss MB. The cork bat test has a problem. They designed the rig to swing at the same speed but if corking a bat really worked it could only do that by increasing the velocity of the bat imparting more energy to the ball. So the real test is does corking a bat change its mass and/or its center of gravity. If it does then a corked bat would indeed move faster and hit the ball further.
@michaelfortier7726
@michaelfortier7726 10 ай бұрын
I agree it was an oversight not to test it for the audience, but in reality it's not happening. The cork absorbs energy from the ball, which the standard bat does significantly less, which is why the speed was reduced so much. No human alive is swinging that corked bat at twice the speed either, I wouldn't expect more than a few more MPH.
@rocknral
@rocknral 8 ай бұрын
Well maybe. Just because it moves faster doesn't mean it goes further For example, if you can swing a broom stick 10% faster, will it go as far or 10% further or go anywhere? We know the answer.

I've always been bothered by the fact that the corked bat, because it's lighter, is hitting the ball later in it's swing in the high-speed. That's AFTER the point of maximum energy transfer (which would be perpendicular to the path of the ball) but they didn't adjust the rig to correct that.

Really bad test. They start of by saying that they dont want to show how to cork a bat, because MLB forbids it, then they do a bad test, and say that a corked bat is worse. If its worse, why would MLB ban them? This made me not trust the results of mythbusters, and to be honest, its a friggin TV show, not an actual study. Why was the Humidity Myth only deemed "Plausible" ? The entire reason of the control group of balls that hadn't been tampered with was to make sure that humidity was the only variable that affected the result of the study. And the result was clear as day! None (!) of the 30 humid balls went farther than any of the 30 balls in the control group, while all (!) 30 dry balls did. How much more confirmed can a myth be?

If they want to study the effects of a corked bat they should have had bats of varying weights and cores striking a static ball rather than faffing about making an air cannon. Their experiment was done this way for TV and not all that scientific since the cannon added a variable since it would never be an exact pressure, a static ball is a known variable since it's not moving at the time of impact and by controlling the speed of the bat to keep it consistent the only difference is the distance it travels. A lot of the science on the show was flawed for TV and dressed up to hide problematic variables.

A corked bat wasn't for hitting the ball farther, it was first used to keep up with the evolving pitchers. They started throwing faster and some guys needed a lighter bat to swing faster while they adjusted their timing with a regular bat. So they corked some of them, it's lighter and if done right is very hard to catch. The belief it made the ball go farther was easier for people to believe, so that's the story that stuck.

Perhaps the corked bat is used just as intended from the results and it might make sense. When the players see the batter swinging hard they might think the ball was hit harder than it actually was throwing them off. So perhaps the myth is just a myth behind the real myth!
@jumpman8282
@jumpman8282 10 ай бұрын
It's an interesting thought. Then again, professional baseball players have a reaction time that is almost inhuman, so I think that if there is anything to gain from playing with a corked bat it must be marginal at best, especially with the ball only traveling at half speed.
@paulg6274
@paulg6274 10 ай бұрын
Lolol no, that's not a thing whatsoever. They aren't trying to hit the ball softer to "throw the defense off". It just makes the bat head lighter. They messed up this test because the corked bat was being swung just as fast as the heavy bat. And u cant just "use a lighter bat", because you still want the weight of the handle ect
@damirrukovansski3529
@damirrukovansski3529 29 күн бұрын
The corked bat segment was flawed. Corking a bat turns a typical wood bat from a drop 3 to a drop 5. Done properly, the wood density will not change much. But that difference in bat speed is enough to increase the momentum and thus increase EV and therefore distance. Their main flaw here was having their useless contraption swing both bats at the same speed. Of course swinging the now lighter bat has less momentum and therefore less numbers that the original bat. The Baseball Bat Bros did a couple of great clips on this topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZh1qrxqmK-oY2Q.html

Maybe it would have been good to weigh the dry and humid balls. yes it may effect elasticity, but surly a humid ball is heavier than a dry ball too.. Newtonian physics says if the same force is applied and the mass is different, the acceleration is different too! F= MA. cricket would provide some interesting tests... straight seam, swing bowling, spin bowling and then reverse swing. these would all be interesting.. Also players try to "lift the seam" would be interesting to see how much effect that has!
@jumpman8282
@jumpman8282 10 ай бұрын
I agree that it would be interesting to examine how much of the difference in distance is due to increased elasticity vs increased mass, but for the sake of the myth that distinction is quite irrelevant. As for cricket myths I think they are established enough to even survive an apocalypse.

Tee point of corking the bat isn't psychological, for the love of god. The point is to make the bat lighter while maintaining the same bat diameter, and if a bat is lighter you can swing it faster, i.e.generate more bat speed, and bat speed is probably the main factor in hitting the ball farther

I love Mythbusters, but the methodology for testing the knocking the cover off the ball myth was stupid. Nobody with a working brain expects a batter to knock the cover off a brand new ball by hitting it once, no matter how hard. It does happen - to old, worn baseballs in sandlot games. Or, extremely rarely (like 3 or 4 times a decade across MLB), in pro games, where something like a tiny unnoticed splinter in a bat can combine with the spin of a pitch to slice a cut in the cover of the ball, which allows the core of the ball to work its way loose.

Im not a fan of teams making their balls humid. Which such a dramatic change its unfair to compare players in different eras. Baseballs has always been pure. Wooden bad swung by man vs leather wrapped ball thrown by man. With humid balls youre especially guaranteeing old records cant ever be beat

from wat i understand is both teams bat so team1 gets normal balls fresh, then team 2 steps up n the balls are now have had time to absorb moisture n thus difrent, so is there already the same from start to fin then its fair to both teams if i understand correctly

Really bad test with the corked bat. Mythbusters are a myth that is busted to be not true lol. If you want to know if it actually matters, search for the Baseball Bat Bros video on corking and youll see that a corked bat is working for sure.

Corked bats are lighter so you can swing them faster. It isn't about the springyness, it's about bat speed.

and machismo/male ego. atually using a lighter bat especially up to recent times was seen as the player being weak and less of a 'man'. corking the bat lightens it while maintaining the appearance of a heavier weighted bat.

@@marcelmoreau2733 lol it has nothing to do with ego. a heavier bat makes the ball go further but if u make it lighter in the right spot (the barell) is increases swing speed but maintains its stuctural integrity

@marcelmoreau2733 10 ай бұрын
@@paulg6274 there IS an element of ego involved. by corking a bat you reduce actual weight but every one thinks you are swinging at marked weight. so with lighter weight, you swing faster. people watching you swing a 44ounce marked bat like they swing a 32ounce, think that you are even stronger then you are. that is boost to YOUR ego while also increase intimidation factor as people think you will hit ball harder as you are swinging a 'heavier' bat harder then they swing their lighter weighted bat.

@@marcelmoreau2733 lol man u have no clue what ur talking about. Firstly no one swings 44 oz bats. Players use the weight of bat that they like to hit with, they don't have some small d*ck complex that makes them use heavier bats even though they hit worse. And defenders positon hitters based on their spray charts, not how heavy their bats are.
@marcelmoreau2733
@marcelmoreau2733 10 ай бұрын
i was using 44 as an example. modern bats are made of different woods then traditional bats and yes, in the mlb and other leagues up until 2000s, there were players using 44ounce bats. and prior to over analytical nonsense that takes place now, players did play based on tendencies and reputations of other players. if it was known a player was considered a power hitter, and used a heavier bat to have more impact on a hit, then they positioned themselves deeper in the field. corking the bat allowed for a faster swing, but softened the contact, as shown in the episode which reduced how far ball travelled, allowing for hits to drop in front of fielders that were playing deep. a side effect as theory was cork was acting as a spring t launch ball further, but episode prove this not to be the case.@@paulg6274

The bigger ball in fasrball makes it possible to throw a riseball. It is very popular and very hard to hit, thus fastball has more strikeouts than hardball.

Like most of the myths tested in this video, they missed the point of the rising fastball. It's not about literally rising, it's about putting a lot of backspin on the ball so it drops _less than expected,_ giving the appearance that it's rising. "Rising fastball" is a misnomer but people don't actually think it's rising..
