Debunking James Lindsay on Gnosticism and Hermeticism - CQ
On most things, in most ways, I think James Lindsay if terrifyingly correct. On religious history he is dead wrong.
March 19, 2024 - Spring Equinox.
On this day, the Sun dawns on the cusp of Ares and Pisces. First Day of Spring. Birth of the year. Light wins over darkness as day becomes longer than night.
I'm a fan of James Lindsay and credit where credit is due, he's a an important social critic, and icon of sense and reason in the age of wokeness. He's also an author of a growing number of books, and Founder of New Discourses. His most recent title is "The Queering of the American Child" which I recommend.
I do not recommend his work on Alchemy and Gnosticism however, as he does not have the depth in religious studies, nor the insights on these important models, to be able to claim that a secret religion (Gnosticism) is responsible for modern wokeness, communism, identitarianism, and collectivism.
IF Marx and Hegel were influenced by Alchemy, Hermeticism and Gnosticism, they completely inverted the philosophy from the maxim, "Know Thyself" to "control the world with lies and delusions"
I talk about the origins of Christianity as a collectivist, group-identity project, compared to the individualism of Hermetic Philosophy and the Gnostic experience of the Divine.

the difference between christianity's secret knowledge given to the disciples and hermeticism/gnosticism's secret knowledge is that christianity is not about man becoming divine, but rather embracing the fact that it was made by the divine. the reason gnosticism/hermeticism is drawn to marx is because of his idea that man is divine, man is creator, which is a hermetic thought, and just so happened to be shared by hegel. whereas hegel believed in a supernatural divine, marx believed that man had created man. that man was divine. which leads us back to ouroboros, a symbol that means the rainbow snake, i.e. the illusionary self. the idea that god and man are inseperable. its moreso a depiction of man's relation to god than it is time.

Thanks for this - I’ve been hoping someone would speak out about Lindsey’s relatively recent attack on Gnosticism. I generally relate to Lindsey’s sentiments but definitely do not agree with his direct linking of Gnosticism with the Woke agenda today - I think this connection is misplaced despite likely being well-intentioned. I was surprised, honestly, because it seems like a rather sophomoric analysis on Lindsey’s part (i.e. out of character). PS - would love your take on The Urantia Papers (new to your channel - not sure if you’ve looked into at all). Admittedly, it has a very Christian slant - I recently discovered it, and I’m trying to decide what I think of it.

Lindsay has already addressed this, he's not talking about Gnostics. He saying that there's a wider interpretation that can be taken that he's calling all "gnosticism". Not big G that you're talking about. He's got a video on it. He's not saying that they're the "real" gnostics, he's saying that's how he's using the word. If you're going to say he's wrong, you have to argue his usage, or you're not arguing against his position.

he’s condemning hermeticism, the demiurgos, alchemy and referencing 1st and 2nd century texts. I don’t see daylight between his big G and little g Gnosticism after watching 8 hours of his ignorant speculation about this topic. If he had corrected himself and realized there isn’t a secret 3rd religion in the west, dating back to Thoth, the Egyptian god he regularly implicates, all of which he claims inspired Kant, then he should take down his many hours of commentary on this topic. I like him, he’s done great work in other areas, but as they say, he’s so far off on this one, he’s not even wrong.

That's true. Although he finds it to be a simulacrum of Christianity and thinks it's silly, that's as far as his thoughts on Gnosticism go. His true belief is that gnostic and hermetic templates are being used by many others who want to make simulacrums out of simulacrums to justify their beliefs. Not that Gnosticism inherently deals with liberal agendas.
