Thank you for this awesome video, from Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1970 , the great Colin Meads visited my school when he toured South Africa with Brian Lochore's All Blacks... autographed my rugby book. There are two kinds of Springboks, those who have played Test Rugby and those who have played a Test against the Mighty All Blacks. My All Black Heroes when growing up in the 60's and 70's..Colin Meads, Bryan Williams, Syd Going and Chris Laidlaw.

Thank you @RugbyPass. I'm only seeing some of these clips for the first time. As a kid in Zim, I would buy old South Africa Sports Illustrated magazines to catch up with rugby and cricket sporting icons. It didn't matter that the images were six or seven months old by the time I got them; just getting a sense of the moments was enough. Thanks to the internet and you guys, access to footage is now real. Here is hoping that sometime in the future some kid currently deprived of access to data or telly or whatever, will find such content still freely available.

Awwesome doccie. Good to see those "old" games from the 90s and what rugby used to look like ;-) How amazing Cullen was. The great Aus team of those years - Burke, Mortlock, Eales, Gregan etc. A lock kicking for poles (!), the amazing Bok team under Mallet. And dare I say - the RWC failure of NZ is glossed over ;-) From a proud Bokke supporter

@@catholicrugbyfan1635 it meant so much to us at the time (1996) because we were out smarted by the bokke in 1960 and 1970, and then were robbed by a cheating ref ( we felt) gert buzedenhoit in 1976, ( admitted by Dr Dannie Craven) we felt as if we would never win there. NZ refused neutral referees in 1976, which was offered by SA. Since neutral ref in 1981 our winning percentage has doubled, just saying. SA is still our most respected foe, and long may that continue. I worry though that your country will chase those big soft pounds in the future, which will destroy our rivalry, as the heavyweights of world rugby

@@joedennehy386 Hi Joe, I agree the All Blacks were a little unlucky not to finish the rubber with honours even. The lack of a consistent goal - kicker in the Tests was a real handicap, Syd Going and Bryan Williams shared the goal - kicking with little success. I feel the All - Blacks would have won that series if they selected Laurie Mains, who scored over 100 points on the 1976 tour. In 1970, a broken arm sustained by Colin Meads robbed the All - Blacks of their leading tight forward and his absence was sorely missed. By the way, being catholic I thought it would be a good idea to incorporate my rugby knowledge with my faith. I have posted 17 videos. In My Childhood Heroes Team, I have selected my three All - Black Heroes. Please feel free to share this link with family and Kiwi rugby followers. GOD bless, Garry from Johannesburg, South Africa.

And the dull, boring style that the game has degenerated into - Rugby League with 15 players and line outs. The first time I saw the All Blacks play was against the 1959 Lions. Sure, the game evolves over the years, but what it has turned into today is downright ugly. Did I mention predictable? Any attacking line out within 15 metres of the opposition's goal line pretty well guarantees a pushover try. It's ugly stuff.

I just saw Hamish Bidwell greatest All Black 15 and I know he said he that it was personal preferences and choices how ever as not just an All Black fan but a rugby fan some of his choices were just plain disrespectful. He chose Michael Jones over Richie McCaw, the most capped player of all time, most capped All Black of all time. A guy who won 2 world cups and played 1 with a broken foot. He also chose John Kirwan over Doug Howlett the guy who has scored the most tries in All Black history. He chose Mauger over Ma'a Nonu as well Joe Stanley over Conrad Smith, I would argue that Umaga should have been chosen for his contribution to the evolution of All Black rugby. Just disrespectful honestly, he even said there were other left wingers with more skill than Jonah and used Jeff Wilson as an example. Wilson was a right wing and a fullback? You would leave out the names of Rokococo and Julian Savea who were left wingers who scored a ton of tries for NZ and mention Wilson who was a right wing?

@thefobbie I understand these are all great All Blacks, I watched the "Frank Bunce show" as you called it but it is not about skill at the end of the day it is about who is the best. McCaw is the greatest of all time the numbers don't lie, if it were about skill then Carlos Spencer and Beauden Barrett would be the greatest flyhalfs of all time. Not to be rude but 1987-1990 the game was amateur, they played less fixtures and they did not get to play the Boks. As for Bunce his a hell of a player but once again the Combo of Nonu and Smith was just on another level, and then there is Tana who helped drag the All Blacks from a frail team mentally to being world champs. I do not disagree with Jonah's selection but I have to disagree with John Kirwan as Doug Howlett was too good and he is the highest try scorer in All Black history and very underrated.

@danesmith8913 4 жыл бұрын
@thefobbie Firstly McCaw vs Jones you said Jones is an off the ground player which means he was a player who ran the ball very well and got around the park sort of like the Ardie Savea of 3 seasons ago. Maybe at the time that was acceptable under the laws of old New Zealand did not need a flank to do the current core roles. Let us look at Richie, 148 test matches as a flank which shows his level of fitness not just physically but mentally was off the charts. Lineout specialist, 3rd or 4th most test tries by an All Black forward showing he knows way to the try line. Turnover specialist, not just the highest average when it comes to number of turnovers in general but at the most crucial times in a match. Also when he was playing he more often than not had the most tackles per match after match after match, he was also excellent ball carrier and a good link man had a good passing game. He was a brilliant leader and as such was better than Jones. Jones may have been faster than McCaw and better on the attack but you would gain more from having McCaw on the field than Jones. Next is Umaga, Umaga may not have won a world cup but Umaga was the All Black captain who helped revolutionize All Black traditions and change the team culture. He was the captain of the All Blacks and the head of the leadership group leading the way for the success that came to the All Blacks later on, so once again get your facts straight. It is not about what he achieved when he was in the jersey it was what was achieved after him due to what he helped put in place. Bunce has a nice highlight reel, but Umaga as a center was big, strong, fast with a good distribution game and solid on defense and was a wing at first and if youtube it has a pretty decent Umaga show. The players wings around him flourished cause of this, Rokococo and the Gears etc etc. Umaga would sit Bunce down, then you have Conrad Smith whose distribution and ability to glue the backline together was phenomenal. His vision, and decision making ability as well as his defense alongside the beast that was Ma'a Nonu was incredible and together they were the most destructive yet well balanced center pairing New Zealand and the world has seen. As for Howlett all he needed to be is fast, that is a wings Job there is no substitute for speed and Howlett was a machine. Maybe if Kirwan has his pace he would leading try scorer for the All Blacks but he is not. But to say that is all that Howlett was is hogwash. Howlett was solid under the highball and sound in defense, you could also never accuse howlett of not looking for work. He even played fullback and did a stellar job at that. Cover defense was amazing as well and his partnership with Mills and Rokococo was excellent. The All Blacks side of 98 was bad losing the Bledisloe, the 99 side was better and went to the world cup as favorites and won the tri-nations that season. The 2000 was bad and lost both as well as 2001 but in 2002 and 03 they won the tri-nations and bledisloe but lost the world cup. Funny enough in 04 they ended up bottom of the log in the tri-nations. All said with respect your a fellow All Black supporter but in all of the above I think the most disrespectful thing is to not give Richie his credit he deserves as probably the greatest player of all time. NZ public also did not appreciate Jonah, where as every else in the world he was a legend.
