There is a certain energy that comes with a visit to the glaciers. I have never felt as free, or as alive as I do when I am exploring or visiting the glaciers, but this experience was something completely different. Being able to camp right above the glacier, with a view across the valley to a glorious waterfall, with no people anywhere to be seen and calving the way it was, turned this two day stay into a five day dream. I spent a portion of every day down at the glacier, listening to it pop and groan as it makes its way down the mountain. The energy in the air is peaceful and comforting, but the calving is dangerous and exciting. To me, it is the perfect mixture of the emotions. It feel so good to finally be north, and I could not have asked for a better start to the northern travel season.
A wild thing about glaciers that most people don't realize, is that they are constantly moving. They flow down the mountain like a solid river, carving away the rock beneath them. I certainly did not expect to find signs of humans on the glacier surface, but never the less there they are. Where they came from though, is a completely other story. Most likely they relate back to the time of the now abandoned Granduc mine, which has not been active for more than 40 years. These remains could have been carried for decades on the glacier, leaving the destination further and further behind every day. Were they put there from an avalanche? Or possibly a team trying to cross the ice field? It is too dangerous to try and access them now by foot, but who know what may be lost at the bottom of a crevasse, never to be seen again.
Crazy enough, this is actually not the only surprise we will find on the mountain during this visit, but that is for next week. ;)

Dude I gotta tell ya... The quality of your videos is simply incredible. I mean it's full-on big money documentary quality. To say you put a lot of effort into these things is a gross understatement. I'm sure your making a ton of people in meeting rooms have to listen to "why do you want all this money for your documentary when this guy from Canada can do it without it?!" Oh what a good man can do if left to his own means and determination.

Something you might want to think about doing to your truck is adding a trailer hitch ball and or the receiver to the front of the truck given the narrow and rugged "adventure" driving you are doing. If you ever have to back up long distances and can manage to get the boat trailer around to the front you can comfortably and much quicker back up for miles if need be also there is a big benefit pushing a trailer say if you wanted to go down some narrow track to launch on a river or lake, the steering input immediately directs trailer direction and so precisely you could thread the eye of a needle so to speak. A real handy option/ability to have.

Footprints from the earth's soul, she lets go of what she knows, revealed reveler's from another era, of what's come and sold. She's old, tired, melting tears of great joy, and great hardship, this is our home, our solace, the road less travelled, and new roads before us, West meets east shortly thereafter, I wish we all have the greatest peace, live well, live in peace, Earth is our home! Wow ... Bear glacier has receded quite a lot since I was last there in 2016. I was in a Ford E350, 2-wheel drive RV headed to the Salmon glacier. Edit: For those unaware, Salmon glacier and the Granduc mine are both in Canada ... but that road must go through the U.S. to get to both. Additional footage can be found in this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMViksWZ3K27qmw.html

Dustin: Hi from Calgary. OMG there are no words to express the magnificence of that. A bit disappointed to see all the human crap laying around. But I do realize it was a very active mining area and the word reclamation is not one in the mining companies vocabulary. As a climber I appreciate your ability to know when to say this is far enough when it comes to glacier and mountain travel. Thanks man that was one helluva start to the northern destination.

Dustin, that was a once in a lifetime experience that you captured for all of us! My one and so far only Salmon Glacier experience was from the before times, we stayed overnight at that first look out you were at and that was an experience that still pops into my mind all these years later. Any of your readers that might be thinking about going to Hyder and up to the glacier...just do it. Video doesn't do justice to the immensity, the sheer size of the thing.

Wow Dustin, it's pretty cool watching giant iceberg calving into the ocean, but watching the Earth change, including changing the flow of a river from glacier calving was extra cool. Super awesome, Dustin, way to go. Damn that was so engaging. A continuous thumbs up.

Such an incredibly harsh and dynamic landscape. I was struck by the thought that the valley where I live would have looked very much like this 10000 years ago. But without the garbage on the glacier.
