I was driving on Beverly Blvd near the Beverly Center in 1977 and this came on the radio. Two minutes into the song I pulled off the road transfixed by it. I almost cried when the sax solo came on. I had never heard a more beautiful song before, with such a gorgeous arrangement. Three weeks ago I attended Al Stewart's Beverly Hill concert for the sole purpose of hearing Year of the Cat performed live. It is the leftist Controlled Cities that are Burning and People are being Murdered in Record numbers. Thank you, Mr. Stewart, for your songs. They were always special to me. I loved the history songs. Met a fellow historian who was playing Roads to Moscow all the time and eventually fell in love with him. But Year of the Cat has become my favorite song. When I retired, I moved to a country where they turn back time. I take long walks here, over stone roads, past terraced fields and thousand-year-old villages. Neolithic temples and a fortress city, where Peter Lorrie's iconic character might walk by anytime. Kalypso lived here, and she took a shipwrecked king into her cave. My own ancestors came from here. Our market stalls have limestone walls, or no walls, but you can buy the handmade, hand-painted tiles, blue or any color. The brilliant sunshine and turquoise sea make color inevitable, so we don't fight it. It's a good life, and I'm glad there is a song that captures it, so perfectly. Thank you for writing it.

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain. Imagery. As a young kid, I was fascinated by those lyrics and the musical embellishments throughout the song. This song helped me become a songwriter with a true sense of song structure and with substance. Al is a legend.

Dear Mr. Al Stewart, Vietnamese/Americans myself included really appreciate your song and adore who you are Sir. Your song touches and captivates our being. I keep looking back, a lifetime back across the centuries and can connect and feel my ancestors laughter and smiles listening to your gorgeous song. It captivates our sense of history, romanticism and stubborn resilience. Vietnam is the only country among many in Asia following the Chinese zodiac that retains the Cat over the Rabbit but that is another story in itself. May the Mandate of Heaven bless and speed you anywhere that you go and that you do. May the mountains always be to your back to give you leverage. Sunshine always illuminate your handsome face full of character. And winds of heavens mandate carry you aloft to dance with the St⭐️rs...

@Bass mike Thank you for your response; I enjoyed reading it. I don't remember the circumstances of how I began listening to that album, but I may have picked it up from the bargin bin at the Rhino Record store and was intrigued by the song titles. The same thing happened at another time when I picked up a Loreena Mckennit album. Thanks again for your Past, Present, and Future story

I missed the opportunity to see Al Stewart when he came to Mobile, AL. I had to work but I wish I'd gone to see him instead. I have always loved the sound of his voice in everything he does. As a teenager, my parents hated the music I listened to but my mom heard me playing Year of the Cat and actually told me to turn it up. Then she said, "Finally, you got taste". I love you Alastair Stewart.

One of the best concerts I have ever been to was in Santa Fe New Mexico in the mid 80's. We were there by accident, heard about a certain Al Stewart performing in a club. Surely that could not be THE Al Stewart that we knew from all the famous songs, but he was. There we were, a small club concert with absolute superb musicians, all of them multi instrumentalists. I can still see us sitting there on the floor, the band on a tiny stage and I can still hear the music. What a concert. Thanks for the great memory Al.

For some reason, I couldn't get this song out of my head yesterday and woke up this morning...and with my morning coffee, played this song. That is the sign someone knew how to write a great song... catchy and you can't get it out of your head. And yes, this is a timeless song.

I saw Al Stewart in a small venue in Fairhope Alabama about 20 years ago. I had the opportunity to spend a little time speaking with him after the show and found him as delightful as he is in this video. He is a very talented fellow and it was very nice to meet him. I was a history major so his music has always hit a chord with me. I loved "Roads to Moscow"!

I was quite upset after hurricane Ian. I live in Cape Coral Florida. Yes, I have, after 30 years, dealt with alot of devastating issues with hurricanes. BUT, this is what happened. It was magical! I was driving around my devastated city, feeling very upset. Then, " The Year of the cat" came on my Sirius radio. Yes, I've heard it many times before ( I am 61)...THIS TIME THAT SONG CHANGED MY LIFE. The " rift " as AL Steward explained on this Sirius XM station, was what " made that song." So, I decided that I, am going to make my " own song" ..no, not a real song..a song about how ONE SONG, can change your life..in the midst of loosing my home, some friends , etc. Thank you AL, and all the mucians that helped me get thru this horrible situation.

Seems like a very sincere and nice man. I first heard TIme Passages in 1978 when I was 15. I just moved to a very cold New England town and I was lost and lonely - this song came on and every line told my story up until that point of my young life. Yearning for the familiarity of my old home, "I felt the beat of my mind go drifting..." Now I hear the song and it rings even truer, "Years go falling in the fading light, buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight". The line that released all the pain and sadness and gave me a reason to look forward to what has been and continues to be a beautiful life was: "Don't know why you feel that there's something to learn, its just a game that you play." It all made sense to me that these emotions we all felt (and feel) is indeed a game we play to find our balance. Thank you Al for helping me find the balance and beauty in life!

This melodic poetry, The Year of the Cat, was my theme song in those magical moments after I'd flung myself from the precipice of life to the brash insanity of Bat Out of Hell, then witnessed my coarse twill bell bottoms and loose embroidered buccaneer blouse balloon out and fill with air to set me down gently, far from the sharp rocks of the tumultuous sea beneath, onto quieter gentler shores. I've been making my way inland to these wonderful chords ever since. I love this song. It is ridiculously redolent of my Salvation, unexpected and undeserved, nearly a half century ago. . . Lovely to see Al Stewart happy and successful and appreciated.
