Hi everyone. Today we are looking at a new sleeping pad/air mattress I recently purchased from Decathlon - the Forclaz MT500 XL. Non of the current air mats I own are long enough for me and my feet always hang off the end. I spotted this XL mat, which not only should be long enough for someone as tall as me (6'2"), but also a little wider than my other pads. In this video, we'll go through its facts and figures, I'll test it overnight and then give you my overall verdict.

Hi, quick note regarding filling the pad, DO NOT place your mouth near the opening but blow from far away, you will move much more air and fill it much faster and with far less effort.

Thanks for the tip. I’d never used one of these bags before this, so I made an error filling it the way I did. Cheers 😊👍🏼

I’ve got the large version of this mat and I’ve used it down to about -1 Celsius and it’s been really good. I also have the large version of the Forclaz 700 mat which is the light weight non insulated mat R value 1.9 and that is a fantastic late spring to early autumn mat.

I’m glad it has worked out for you. So far I really like it. Thanks for sharing your experience on this and the forclaz 700. I’ll check that one out. Have a great weekend 😊☀️👍🏼

Looks like a decent airbed 👍 With a silver backed roll mat and everything inside a bivvy bag you could certainly push it to 4 seasons

Cheers Steve. Yeah it could definitely be extended to four seasons with a roll mat 😊👍🏼🏕️

Yeah I've got one and I used the Decathlon concertina style closed cell foam pad underneath (RValue of 2.2) and I slept in it down to 3.4°c without any cold coming up through the mattress. Great bit of kit, a bit on the "heavy" side though. But for £70 it's excellent.

@MG-bs5mr That’s good to know, thanks. Definitely a great bit of gear. Yep not the lightest, but as you say, for the price it’s great value 😊👍🏼🏕️

The thing is with air pads is longevity, or rather lack of it. I've been through a few when I was homeless, no stones or anything like that, it was failing valves and seams failing, not cheap ones either. None lasted more than a month so I ended up getting a cot bed like the army ones, not exactly portable weighing 7kgs but reliable. I don't trust any of them no matter what they cost. Your review was fine. I wonder if it'd live up to daily use and for how long until it failed.

I don’t think any air mattress is built to be used every day, long term. Just occasional use. Most outdoor people might go camping once a week/two weeks, but over the year probably only spend 25-30 nights on their mats (and spread out over the year). You will have done that in a month. I also tend to rotate mats depending on the season. As of yet I’ve had no punctures or leaking valves on any air mattress I’ve bought (although I haven’t used mine as heavily as you). Either I’m very lucky or you’re very unlucky. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m thinking of buying a cot bed soon as my Dad wants to visit and come camping with me. It would be too difficult for him on a regular air mat. As you say they are heavy, but should be hard wearing. 😊👍🏼🏕️

@@GreeklishOutdoors Ah but 30 nights in one go or spread over a year makes no difference, it's just done in one go like a proper test should be done. If a mat can stand that then it should last well. 25 to 30 uses of a £100 mat (I spent that much on one) even over a year isn't enough for money, certainly not one month. I think I'm just unlucky. Also, manufacturers don't state that they are for occasional use so they should last every single day for at least as long as any guarantee they have. That's my thinking though but it isn't unrealistic thinking either. Most people have their TV on daily, a phone, cooker, hair dryer, all are expected to last so why not camping mats, especially expensive ones.

Hello ! Are this pad is loud when you turning or something ?
@GreeklishOutdoors
@GreeklishOutdoors 20 күн бұрын
Hello. No I don’t find it very loud. It’s not silent, but definitely quieter than the Thermorest pads for example. 😊👍🏼🏕️

I understand the issue .. but whats the point of blowing into a pump sack instead of the mattress directly? The end result should be more or less the same .. moisture in the mattress ;-)
@GreeklishOutdoors
@GreeklishOutdoors Ай бұрын
Yes to some extent I agree. But some of the moisture from your breath will condense onto the sides of the sack... You don’t have to blow into the sack, but it’s quicker. I still prefer an electric pump over the sack, as you avoid this issue. 😊👍🏼

@@GreeklishOutdoors we can agree on that, after all it's always a compromise. i love my little flextail, too. cheers from germany :-)

The point can be missed when you inflate it the wrong way, like he unfortunately did in the video You should blow into the pump sac from about 20cm, not directly into it. This makes use of the Bernoulli effect and will "suck in" the air that is around the entrance of the pump sac, thus, less humidity from your lungs, and less breath needed.

Looks a decent pad Jono (decathlon kit tends to be pretty good in my experience) for me in tent I prefer a closed cell (foam pad ) but I have a few inflatables for Bivvi camping 🏕️ (did like the bag inflater being integral to the stuff sack 👌🏻) Good review ATB Simon
@GreeklishOutdoors
@GreeklishOutdoors 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Simon 😊👍🏼 Closed cell foam is definitely more reliable for all surfaces. Unfortunately I never seem to get a good nights sleep on one. To be fair, the same goes for many inflatables. This one seems to be the best I've bought so far. Thanks a lot mate. Have a great day 😊👍🏼☀
