My thoughts exactly. When he mentioned all the flags - I saw a few cars, beautifully kept storefronts, but no commerce, no laughing, no activity. A ghost town. That swimming pool should have been packed. I grow tons of food for my community center. I am early retired but making mass gardening my full-time hobby for 5 years now. When I go riding my bicycle around, I don't see any gardens. I live in an unincorporated area on the outskirts of a Midwest city with acre sized lots. I wager in that 30 years ago timeline, there were gardens all throughout my community. I even have free water due to a high-water table. My sump pump water is captured and keeps Bug Garden alive and my basement dry.

Me too. Our town is in the middle of 2 medium size towns. We have 1 caution light, 2 person Post office, gas station and a Dollar General. That's it. Our front neighbors are cows, back neighbors ate goats and chickens. Beautiful pecan trees everywhere. I wouldn't have it any other way. We've lived here for 35 yrs and only a few times(at Christmas when the gifts are in the trunk), ever locked our car doors. NO ONE has EVER bothered anything in our yard or house. We walk sometimes to our BEAUTIFUL country church which is less than 1/4 mile. A BEAUTIFUL LIFE we have here.

Ex video. Showing your restaurant tab made me chuckle from a recent trip I took. Went to Maine (3 wks ago) visited up down the state, and Maine lobsters in a restaurant are cheaper at home (FL) versus Maine; and every meal was almost identical to your bill. It's simply pricey everywhere and many locals can no longer support their local businesses, sad state of affairs in USA, Canada, and Europe.

Looking at those cost of living graphics the housing is just above half the national average but food is close to the same as everywhere else. Corporate price gouging is destructive to small town living. This started during the pandemic and never stopped. As they say the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Great video as usual Joe. Love the small towns. And yeah getting away from the traffic. Really surprised me the medium age there was pretty young most the time in small especially rural areas it’s usually older. Great to see people are not letting them die. Back in my trucking days have been to that feed mill. I like the fact you brought up about how the government uses the same standards for poverty level and it’s not always exact in places with lower cost of living I see it round here myself. Thanks for the pricey trip through the Bass Pro attractions. I’ve been to several but have always wanted to go to this one. Maybe someday. LoL on a side note I think that large fish is a grouper maybe a Goliath grouper. Thanks for the ride along guys appreciate it. Safe travels my friend. Keep filming I’ll keep watching

I really enjoy your videos. No drama, no clickbait. Just nice and easy facts and videos about rural US. I guess the low medium age in Marionville and Crane could be because its cheap to buy a house and they all might work in Springfield wich is only a 30-40 minute drive. Also can be the reason for downtown decaying in Marionville. Nobody "lives" there, only sleeps there. Strange contrast indeed on the nice suburbs versus downtown in collaps...Oh and you forgot to mention how many people lives in Aurora.

A man from down under here, I had a peek at the house on Central Ave on Zillow, looks like a good deal to me, most of the house is really nice ... loved Crane, and what that town has done with the downtown looks outstanding. There are even buildings that look like they are no longer used, but they are cared for so the only direction this town will probably go is up, what we are seeing here in the present is going to become history in the future ... so more great work from Joe'n'Nic 👍

One of those old two-story storefronts would be a good place to start. Revamp it and live out your quiet life there. Redo the floors and windows, refinish the floors, put in mini splits, and get a Starlink on your roof. Oh, yeah, and sit up on the roof at night and sip while you look at the stars and sleep up there if you like. You're just a short drive to Springfield and all the city-things you may need, but you're in the midst of peace and quiet. The only thing better would be to have a lake right there to gaze at and maybe fish and take a dip in. Once the SH'sTF, people are going to be looking for a place like this to have a garden and get away from whoever and whatever. Why not start now, folks. It's coming.

Seeing these small towns with their semi-abandoned main streets makes me want to grab my camera, hit the road to go see them in person and take tons of pictures. And that community pool...it has a diving board! Sadly, they are pretty much extinct in California. Ah, The Wonders of Wildlife Museum! When I first heard about it I scoffed at the idea of a "Disneyfied" aquarium. But wow, I was impressed and really enjoyed my visit (it was especially nice since it was 90 degrees and super humid outside 🙂) The whole complex with the Bass Superstore is a worthy stop for any fan of roadside attractions. Where are you stopping in Delaware? In New Castle you have Old New Castle by the Delaware Bridge and the university of Delaware in Newark. In the state capital you have the Monster Mile at Dover Downs where NASCAR runs every year. Then of course you have the beaches down south, Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, etc. Heads up though, try and do Delaware on a weekday! Traffic on beach weekends can be horrendous! If you want to check out a neat place right over the line in Maryland, stop in Chesapeake City! The Bayard House, Schaffer’s and the Chesapeake Inn are all great places to eat there and all three are right on the C&D canal.

@@maryflaherty7096Ditto on the key lime pie. Some are way better than others, but when you get a good one, it’s so delicious!

Interesting to see one of my towns shown. I watch often and always wondered if I'd catch you driving through. The thing is these towns have branched out like all towns where the old city square just didn't get the action because of the modern big box stores. There's about 90% more to at least two of the towns shown.

That aquarium was neat, and looked to be worth $45 ticket price. As usual, I always get hungry when you show the meals that you and Nicole order. And seeing the deserts is really a challenge. Thank you.

I'm telling ya...Mansfield and Ava and Forsyth, MO is worth a video! Forsyth is where Winter's Bone was filmed. Mansfield is where the Little House books were written. Ava is where "The Hustler" is from. It's also the area with something like the 5th most tributaries in the US!

Ava politics and law enforcement are horribly corrupt. Literally Everyone I know there has either been thrown in jail for ridiculous small reasons or is on parole. Beautiful area in the high country of Missouri though.

Appreciate the tour of these small rural towns. I really like these tours. I’d be so happy to travel the roads and enjoy the scenery. I do like the City Hall in Aurora. I like Crane’s downtown. The Aquarium is very nice. Lion fish are cool. Looking forward to your next video!

The worst thing you can do to a beautiful old house is to split it up into apartments and add outside stairs and the like…

Only 38 mile from Branson. deemed the entertainment capitol of the state. Ozark Country, The Hatfields and the McCoy's The Beverly HIllbillies was inspired by this region. Lots of theaters, lots of entertainment. Crane isn't isolated. Cheers, Rik Spector
