Decaying SS United States Update - Crows Nest Climb - 4k
I went back to the ocean liner today for my final visit and got over 2 hours of video footage. I know my first episode of this ship lacked the video footage but not after today so stay tuned for that. As some of you might of heard, the SS United States is in an option agreement with Crystal Cruise Lines. Crystal Cruise lines will lease the ship for 9 months, inspecting and studying the ship. If they plan to move forward, they will take 100% ownership of the ocean liner, move it to NYC and drop 800 Million US Dollars into it to have the ship sail again. Great news for the SSUS! The SS United States is on government protected property. Do not trespass onto the property as you will face serious federal crimes. Permission was given to enter the port, board the ship, and climb the crows nest.

I bet you have a little better appreciation after that climb of the sailors that did it in all weathers on the old galleons lol! Very interesting videos from you on this ship and thanks for sharing. Glad to see you guys (I'm from UK) preserving your history too. I really hope that if this preservation happens they don't change or add to the superstructure outline - after all it's the original design and the visual identity that made the ship the SS United States.

I don't usually mind heights much, but I found a video the other day of GoPro footage of young people climbing to the tops of skyscrapers and bridges and radio towers, and hanging off the edge, and standing on the very top and looking over the edge. Then they started riding skateboards along the edge, and breakdancing and sitting on the corner with their feet over the edge, about half an inch from death. I couldn't watch it; it literally made me dizzy. Young idiots who think they'll live forever. Maybe they'll mature a lot on the way down once they finally fall!

Thank you for sharing this, Steve! It's a privilege to able to go along with you for the visit to the crow's nest and see what few people have ever been able to see.---This is the first I've heard about the possibility of saving the S.S. United States. I really thought she would decay until someone finally bought her for scrap. The removal of the passenger accommodations back in the 80's may have been good after all as all that probably would have had to be removed or greatly altered anyway because of modern health codes (lots of asbestos used to be there) though the liner is already remarkably strong and safe. Today's passengers would also want more and better amenities than the passengers of the 1950's and 60's; for example in John Maxtone-Graham's book "S.S. United States---Red, White and Blue Riband Forever" the author mentioned the high ratio of passengers to restroom facilities in Tourist Class. Also the days of liners divided into three classes are long over. I'm hopeful for more good news about this extraordinary ship.

I'm stunned. I did a little research on this ship following your first video, and I never imagined any future for this ship except the cutting torch, because she was just so seriously stripped down to husk. Truly amazing news, and I really hope that Crystal do decide it is worth doing - it would just about be a world first, surely, to take a passenger ship in such a state, and rebuild her to her former glory. Most get scrapped as it is uneconomic to perform a major refit, considering what a new ship would cost to build from the keel up. I will be waiting with baited breath for the final decision, and I look forward to your next video of the ship with anticipation. :)

+VauxhallViva1975 The ship looks worse than it is. Lots of Pealing paint. The top and upper is All aluminum. This ship was built with NO wood. Its fast hull design and the steel/Aluminum construction make this a real possibility. Only lead paint really stands in the way. Being stripped and C;leaned of asbestos has made evaluating and renovating Much easier

I sure hope it gets saved. The dollar amount you quote sounds about right. I'd rather spend it on that than build a new one. This ship's an American icon and it's a shame it's been allowed to fall into the condition it is in. The US Navy should have looked after this ship and kept it up over the years. When you think of how much money the US government fritters away constantly, the cost of renovating the United States is nothing. People who think it's an old piece of rusty metal and should be scrapped are ignorant. I find people with no interest in historic preservation quite annoying and near sighted, to say the least.,
@qe2836
@qe2836 8 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. Even if it seems that there wouldn't be much more left of the ship than her hull she's still the same ship. Of course it would be nicer to see her be restored in her original condition but with the claims and regulations of today it isn't possible. There are only a few real ocean liners left so everyone has to be saved, especially this one.
@1940limited
@1940limited 8 жыл бұрын
I would have liked to see it maintained in excellent condition under the auspicious of the US Navy and used as some kind of royal yacht for special occasions. Now it's almost impossible to do that so we'll have to take whatever we can get. As long as it's not scrapped, that's a good thing.

I agree. Ignorant fools. On the first video he posted on this ship, some idiot actually said they "ought to take her out to sea and sink her as an artificial reef for divers". Like the thousands of wrecks we have now aren't enough? You take one of the only remaining ocean liners, and deliberately sink it where no one but divers can enjoy it (as they watch it crust up with marine life and rust away over the years). The thought process (assuming there is one) is foreign to me...what a damn waste that would be, even if we weren't talking about a beautiful and historical artifact! I also agree that the government's priorities suck. They spent, what, a billion a day to fight a useless war in Iraq that just made things worse in the end, and they can't find $800M to fix a ship? They probably spend that much every time they refurbish an aircraft carrier, or more!
@1940limited
@1940limited 8 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more. I'm sure it won't be sunk for a diver's reef, but it's a national embarrassment that the US Navy allowed this ship to deteriorate to the state it is in today. The best we can hope for now is some heavily modified cruise ship that will hardly do justice to the original United States. It will be akin to making a hot rod out of an old car. But it's better than scrapping it; maybe.

Well, "Steve", this IS indeed, magnificent news! I only hope that Crystal(?), will have the sense, to install a powerplant that's ALSO capable of taking her right up to 50KNOTS, her maximum speed, way "back in the day." With concurrent attention, given to her hull and keel--any part of her designed for underwater action--I'm sure this fine old gal will once again, LOVE running LICKETY-SPLIT, skimming the TOPS of the waves. Her speed is about in the same range of today's modern Naval Supercarriers. Fifty Knots?; why, that's about the SAME speed that you and I would drive FREEWAYS, in moderately heavy traffic; think of THAT! Yes, I too, was getting a mite queasy, as you ascended the top tiers of the Crow's Nest. I hope that the railing up there, was at least chest level. If she DOES sail again--HOT DAMN YES!!--I'm gonna ride her, if all the prerequisite elements of my life line up correctly.

Great video, nice view from up there. But climbing up on a vertical ladder isn't really my thing. I wonder what the ship would look like if the plans in 1978 to convert her to a cruise ship had became true. Maybe the steam turbines had been changed to more fuel efficient diesels. And I also think the interior had been changed a lot. So if it happens now instead it's not so bad. If you restore her in a completely original condition she can't meet the regulations of today, that means she could not sail. She would be a museum/hotel ship but that wouldn't be possible without a lot of voluntary donations because the revenues wouldn't cover the costs. This is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

+ChocolateMilkMonster I'm afraid that they have to add a lot of space on the ship if they want her to be successful (profitable) for a long time. Im sure that the first cruises would be sold out without big changes on the ship...but later?. For example the SS France / Norway: By making her more "top-heavy" they could keep her on the market much longer. And the Queen Elizabeth 2 underwent a lot of changes during her 40 year long career. The QE2 was built as a top-modern ship the same year (1969) as SS US got retired, and has now beeing retired for almost 8 years herself. So these changes are bad but necessary.
@sealover5861

What, so everyone on he East Coast has to fly to the West Coast to see a ocean liner? Seems kind of unfair to me. You already get all the good weather.

+Mark Loppe They will not run a museum. Everything inside and the whole superstructure will be totally new and modern. New diesels, azimuth thrusters, bow thrusters etc.

Steve, can you tell me the actual color green of what little remains of the actual decking - mostly near the stern of the ship? i will be building a model of this ship soon and would like get the shade right. Most models show it as a bright emerald green, but I am thinking it is more a blue-green / slate like color. Any help would be appreciated.

+cate carter well I am no money wiz, but that is what they are estimating if they choose to rebuild her. If you do a google search on the article, there is a picture of what they would do to her. In order to meet modern day standards, she has to get a complete face lift. The bridge has to be moved up higher, the 4 engine rooms have to be completely torn out as they were steam. Interior will need to be rebuilt.

+Abandoned Steve (Historical - Urbex) restoring doesnt mean add in new shit, it means to replace old or broken stuff with the same period (time line) stuff.

+alexander1485 well for safety regulations, new radar systems, engines etc are gonna be required. they will not use the same systems they used back in the 50s and 60s. a lot of shit will be brand new and contain high tech systems. but the aesthetics Will look authentic.

+cate carter The ship should come in at around 750 Million, and a new ship would run a bit over 900 million. That said.; this is more than a restoration, its marketing for the current demands. This will NOT be your average ugly top heavy cruise ship. Its smaller, will run more efficiently and will be able to make many more port calls that the "whale " ships do. There may even be some package/ parcel revenue on this if it ports in Australia. Leaner and meaner while keeping its original flavor.

This new cruise company should not get the ship as they want to make it look modern and take away its unique 1950s transatlantic liner look

Yes, it should be fixed up and preserved but not made sea worthy. I would think that the hull engines and guts would not meet todays standards. I think it should be made into a hotel like the Queen Mary!
