I had one (very online) friend who loved The Fake Mate and convinced my roommate (who doesn't know anything about omegaverse) to read it. And then I happened to be with my roommate when she was talking about the book because she was confused, and then brought up knotting because she assumed it meant ropes, and I was like OH NO. So then she looked it up, audibly gasped, and looked like a grandmother clutching her pearls 🤣 She wound up really really enjoying the book, so I'll probably get around to it soon, lol

It’s really interesting to me, because Crooked Kingdom is an all-time fave for me, but I completely get the “they read like adults” thing. I think because my introduction to the universe was the tv-show (where they’re aged up, rightly so imo) I just ignore the ages mentioned in the books and read them like their tv-counterparts 😅 otherwise I think I probably wouldn’t enjoy it as much

OKAY YES Chalice of the Gods is one of my favorite PJO books too!!! major props to Rick Riordan for being able to stay consistent with characterization but also giving the main cast so much growth, I'm so proud of those lil demigods 🥹

I feel the same about the characters reading like adults. It brought the first book down for me from maybe a 4-star to 3-star since it was just too distracting for me to actually pay attention to the plot :,)

So glad you recommended it came from the closet! I similarly watched the hbomberguy plagiarism video recently (in many many parts cause ohmygod that was so tiring lmao) and had this book on my radar for a while, just kept kinda forgetting about it cause I don’t own it. I needed something to listen to at work and remembered you mentioned it and it’s PERFECT for what I need rn!!

Can’t wait for that Janice Hallett. I picked it up when I was in England last year but was saving it for this dreary month. Have you heard of City Under One Roof? If not, you should look it up. I’m reading now - think it might be up your alley. Happy new year. All the best.

I saw your review of The First Mate on NYE and that made me immediately pick it up and read it over the course of 24 and was absolutely giddy the whole time. Fanfic omegaverse meets traditional publishing also equals me, and I need more traditionally published rom coms that are mostly contemporary but slightly paranormal immediately

On Crooked Kingdom - THANK YOU. My main snag on Book 1 was that they were teens (~16-18) but they ALL acted like full grown, completely developed adults with equivalent backstories and I just....couldn't reconcile the discrepancy...which is exactly why I've been putting off Crooked Kingdom lmao

strong agree on the virgin hero trope circumventing so much of the unexamined toxic masculinity that pops up so often with heroes! okay now I'm so conflicted about trying Pride! Two really surprised me this year: 1) PAGEBOY by Elliot Page I dnf’ed at 40% where he started bragging about his sexual exploits and there were so many and all I could think was ‘I hope he’s not outing these people’. I also didn’t feel he was in the best place to write this. A few more years of working with his trauma would’ve been beneficial to a book of this nature. I wanted to love this, and instead I read the whole book hoping there was a person Elliot trusts to just give him huge, gentle hugs for at least about 6 months 2) ONLY FOR THE WEEK by Natasha Bishop (KU) this romance has it all: destination wedding, sand beaches, a man named ROME who is god-like and I wish was a real human, and hot sexy times. I read it on Christmas in two sittings, after gifting it to myself to ensure I would have it. It was a delight!!!! ❤

I keep meaning to give Percy Jackson another try. The first time I read it I was around 25, and was a freaking weeb about it being judgemental. Since, as far as I was aware, books like that didn't exist when I was the target demographic in the mid-90s so I just read parts of the original mythology from my school's library and was all "That's not how it was in the myth". So I want to re-read the books and give them a fair chance.

As someone who read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom first and loved them, I don’t think you need to read The Shadow & Bones trilogy. I read the first of that trilogy and DNFed the series because the writing is not as strong, neither are the characters, and it was too angsty for me. I completely agree that the Six of Crows characters definitely act like adults, which is probably why the duology worked better for me. 😆

I gotta disagree about reading Shadow and Bone first. I don't think you need it to understand or get invested in the world, especially since the two series are set in completely different parts of said world, and there's not a lot of connective tissue between the two series. I personally read the Six of Crows duology first, absolutely loved it, then went back to read the original Grisha trilogy and I actively disliked it. If I had started with Shadow and Bone, I never would have read another thing by Leigh Bardugo. I fully agree with your second point about the characters reading like adults, but that's exactly *why* I liked Six of Crows! Basically, if you want teens being teens, love triangles and angsty drama in a book that's very firmly younger YA, Shadow and Bone is very much that, and if you want something that reads more adult and has more complex character work, Six of Crows is where it's at. I just think it's a matter of taste.
