He was interested in so many branches of learning that he must have been a very useful servant of the Crown. It is also plain to see how his very learned son Francis developed in the way that he did.

Nicolas Bacon sounds like an interesting man. I love his last name too! He was lucky to keep his head through Mary I’s reign and again when he annoyed Elizabeth I. I hope you and your family had a lovely Christmas! Thank you as always for another enlightening video and I’ll tune in again tomorrow.

Yet another luminous video, Claire: Thank you! When people objected to Puritan 'prophesying,' were they objecting to sermons? I'm unclear as to what 'prophesying' meant in Tudor times. I know that Reformers gave sermons, as Anne Boleyn's preacher delivered an explosive sermon against Cromwell. So was a sermon the same thing as a prophecy?

No, a prophecy, in the religious sense, meant the same thing back then, a message believed to be from God.

I don't understand the dichotomy of men like this. Queen Mary allowed him to serve and he spoke for religious tolerance for Elizabeth but he also opposed the release of Mary Queen of Scots because of her faith and greatly benefited from the dissolution of the monasteries? Also, as for the latter, how does this great loss of learning and eradication of centers of (local) education match his 'humanism' and love of knowledge? I know people had to adapt or die in this era but I don't understand how one could do so w/o any seeming crisis of conscience.

It would have been Mary's involvement in plots that he was against. Lots of men, including William Cecil, managed to keep their faith personal in Mary's reign and continue living in England and serving. They were pragmatic, I think.
