I’ve got a Flair 58 and a Niche. I’ve recently accomplished a career milestone, and I have some money saved up to commemorate it somehow. I’ve been agonizing over whether to use my savings to get a Decent. I’m impressed with the company and the innovation. I love to tinker, and I think I would enjoy it. I also really like learning about coffee and mastering new skills, but, man, does $4k seem like an ungodly amount of money to spend. I’m unsure of how much of an improvement in actual taste I would get over the 58, or whether I would mainly be getting more control, repeatability, and workflow convenience. I’ve also wondered whether I would see more of an improvement by getting a titan grinder like a p100 or flat max. For that kind of money, I would want something that could last like 20 years too, and given how technology dependent the Decent is, I’m not sure if I wouldn’t be better off getting something like a Sage Dual Boiler or Lelit Bianca. I’d love to hear your thoughts, Jack. Thanks, and happy birthday tomorrow!

Thank you. B4 I got Decent I was considering Londinium as well as I love lever machines. Flair is great and certain shots might even be better on it than on Decent. With Decent you get great workflow and (as I mentioned) full control on each aspect of pulling the shot. With that extra warranty they offer, the machine should last you for long (not sure if 20years though). As for grinders, Niche is very good for Flair but I would strongly recommend to add a flat burr grinder. I haven’t tried any top shelf flats yet, but my Max 2 is coming in May so I will be able to answer your question then.

As someone with the same setup I'd say upgrade the grinder first. I was eying a Lagom P64 but now timemore came out with the sculptor and especially the 078S seems very promising. If you have a lot of extra money to spend on your coffee stuff and are trying to decide whether you should go for a decent or an end game grinder I personally would order a monolith flat max first. They have pretty long waiting times. I think if you order one now you'll get at the end of the year. So better put that order in as early as possible 😅. I'm sure that you can make better coffee with the decent more reliably and you have a wider range of recipes that you can explore but the difference won't be huge. Not as huge as going from a Niche to an end game grinder.

I am also in a very similar situation. I just got a huge promotion and wanted to ball a little bit as a self pat on the back lol I also have the flair 58 and niche but also have df64 with MP, and ode gen 2. I am also tossed up between the decent and the Lelit Bianca. But I also came to the conclusion that upgrading to a badass grinder would probably lead to a more drastic increase in quality (both flavor of coffee and life lol) I personally would go for P100 if it was right now, but I also thing given how much the high end specialty grinder sector has blown up lately I think we will see some really dope new stuff this year. Plus let’s face it, you’ll probably end up with both at some point in the next year or 2 so get what you feel you would be most proud of to have as a thank you to yourself. Go with your gut, otherwise you may always be like well I should have done the other thing i think lol

What about support / warranty in the UK ? Do they a incountry firm dealing with it ?

@@matthewhorne8499 I mentioned that for most of the issues, Decent will send you spare parts to fix the problem yourself. If it is a bigger problem, you might need to send the machine back to them. They would cover the costs if you are in warranty. I don’t know about any UK based place that would deal with it.

It's like driving a Tesla versus a Ferrari. No one thing is perfect or absolute. I personally prefer style, aesthetics over stats, graphs. Mostly because I know what to expect from the coffee I'm brewing. There are already enough levers to pull on any modern semi-automatic espresso machines. I am more than satisfied with those.

Recently, I am thinking to buy a Decent DE1XL as my secondary machine which I can take it for trips (road trips). However, few things make me quite struggle with Decent: 1. Noise, I don’t expect a vibration pump with this price point; 2. Consistency, I am quite curious of the consistency from Thermo Block For this price point, I think La Marzocco Ljnea Mirca will be a solid competitor. I understand they are different machine: Decent is selling technology; La Marzocco is selling the reputation. What I get from a Micra are: 1. Rotary pump 2. Consistency These two factors are crucial to me. And my decision is more align to La Marzocco Mirca. I would say Decent has made a great effort innovative to change the industry. However, the product yet to improve to meet the tag of “premium”.

I think I agree with what you said. I have to say though, that it works really nicely for me and is also very small and fits into my tiny kitchen. It also comes with a suitcase which makes it ok for when you travel. What is your main espresso machine?

@@mycoffeeshow111 La Marzocco Strada EP. I brought it from a closed cafe. It served in that cafe less than 9 months. When I bought the machine, it still had warranty. I bought it less than 50% from original price. I also had an Alex Deutto II for my coffee event (ministry). It serves weekly within the neighbourhood. I want to get a small and handy one, which I can bring along with my road trip or visit friends and share decent coffee. Decent De1 is not bad, but for its price, there are alternatives.

@@mtpastor4546 you have a very nice setup then. I would recommend to visit a place or a friend with Decent, pull few shots and see how you like it. For me it is great but I understand your objections.

@@mycoffeeshow111 frankly, I don’t have a friend who has Decent; and I haven’t seen the physical Decent machine. However, I revuilt servals La Marzocco machines, and reassembled one Linea Mini. Therefore, I know the quality from LM.

@@mycoffeeshow111 one more thing that Decent would be my choice is it technology. My third machine will also place in my parents’ home. From what I learnt, once the Decent has been dialled in, and connected to a Bluetooth scale, then I do not need to concern about the parameters. Basically, it can serve as a “hit and go” machine. For this scenario, Decent would be the simplest machines for my parents, because too many procedures do not work for my parents (even an e61 is a bit complicated to them).

Happy Birthday Jack. Cheers man. My suggestion to overcome the huge head space is to dose 1-2g more than the filter basket is designed for, and also add a mesh filter above the puck. It helps a lot in creating body, and also making it a dryer puck. I also have a Profitec Pro 700, along with my DE1 Pro. From my finding, the Profitec makes way better 9 bar shots. But what DE1 does better is, I can play with everything else that's not fixed 9 bar. Anyway, hope you have an enjoyable birthday. Cheers, from Malaysia.

Why do you think 9bars extraction on e61 is better than Decent ? My guess os the temperature profile on e61. I have a Bianca v2 and thinking about upgrading because I hate e61 groupheads. Was considering Decent, but it feels like a toys compared to Rocket R9One or ACS Vostok. Now those machines are what I am seriously considering.

@@NANA-gy7yx not really sure why but they definitely don’t taste that good. I had Crem One b4 and stright 9 bar shots were much better. As for Decent, I really like it and like the small footprint of the machine. If I could get something else probably would go for GS3 or Londinium or LM Leva X but would need a bigger place first.

@@NANA-gy7yx Not sure why, but the E61 makes a more gooey syrupy espresso. What's there to hate about the E61? Lots of accessories, and it maintains temperature well.

I have a Decent and it’s probably the best purchase I’ve ever made, I love it. Upgraded from a Rocket Appartamento which was impossible to get consistent shots, I will never buy a HX machine again 😂 MC5 is coming in May and I can’t wait!

Great video! Love the way the coffee wheel looks like a halo behind you 🤣 I was really intrigued by the Decent, but I know the graphs are something I would unhealthily obsess over lol. That puts me in the opposite direction, going for an LR24. Way less parameters to mess with compared to the decent yet the results in the cup give it such a high reputation. If you ever get your hands on one would love to hear some impressions. Keep up the great content!

Thank you very much. I would love to have Londinium. Who knows, maybe when I am famous enough, they will invite me to their factory. Main reason why I didn’t get it, instead of Decent, is long heat up time- up to 45min or so. They actually recommend to keep the machine on all day.

@@mycoffeeshow111 Yeah the short warm up time of these modern machines are fantastic. I know the recent versions of LR24 have a built in scheduler. My coffee routine is pretty predictable, but impromptu cups or issues with the timer would be a huge hinderance for sure. and you’re well on your way! that would be a very cool video!

Great work jack! Love my Decent as well. On the water tank size, usually hits at least 15 drinks, so I think most can go at least a half week without refilling. I'm thinking about getting the catering kit for the convenience. I've also designed a plumbed drip tray so that I don't have to empty it daily, and it pairs perfectly with that catering pump. Lastly you're right, the Decent community is very active and helpful. That paired with such a powerful and configurable machine makes it perfect for me, even with any imperfections. Cheers!

LOVE my Decent! The first one I got was defective, and I had to send it back to Hong Kong (from the US). Decent was great to work with, and sending it back was actually pretty painless. The new one they sent works flawlessly. Not only does it make great espresso; it's cool as hell and adorable, too!

@@mycoffeeshow111 For medium or medium+ roasts my favorite is 80's Espresso, using a 14.5g dose in Decent's 14g Slightly Waisted Basket, with a Stop At Weight of 15g, aiming for 18 seconds (i.e. ristretto). For light roasts I like Extractamundo Dos with the "normal" 18g dose in an 18g basket. What are yours?

Personally for the asking price a water tank cover should come as standard. No other company leaves their's without a cover. And where I live there's a really high chance something will end up doing the backstroke in it 😆. But still looking for my next and last espresso machine. This is high on the top 3 regardless.

Just placed an order for the DF64V yesterday.. hope it will ship in June and will improve my coffee set-up. Next will be a Flair 58 - the Decent is to fare out yet. But hope I will have allot of play with first a flat burr grinder with variable speed for my pour over use and then get all the fun with espresso later this year. So much fun and joy with this addiction 🙂 Thanks for pushing the desire to improve the set-up and be adventurous

@@mycoffeeshow111 I started looking at the DF64, Then the Eureka single dose, then back at the DF64 with cast burrs, then the DF83 that still look very interesting. Then the Fellow Ode v2.. But then the goal of a dual purpose grinder was missed. then the DF64V came and look to solve my quest.. finally made the move. So Timemore Chestnut X as conical grinder and the DF64V as flat burr. Looking forward to its arrival.

I have seen Sanremo machines during London Coffee Festival and you are right- very good looking. Also almost twice as expensive as Decent. I was looking for something relatively small but powerful myself but Sanremo is definitely worth considering.

You have used other dual boilers so I was wondering if the steam from decent is drier than other machines? Have you ever tested it by measuring the amount of water in the milk with a scale? Thanks.

Good idea with the test. It feels drier but I have never measured that. I had Crem One dual boiler, but lost it long time ago so never really compared them.

Ive been using Londiniums for the past 7 years, L1 , LR and LR24. I need a change with a smaller foot print with some tech and have decided to move to Decent DE1 Pro.

Have you already got your Decent? Don’t expect the shots to be exactly the same as on lever machine. If you approach it with open mind, you should be very happy though.

@@mycoffeeshow111 Hi Jack, no not yet. Yes i do understand they wont be the same silky texture. I want to be able to explore more with extraction profiles and more so temperatures. As i tea drinker , I also like the fact i can use a tea PF for tea and do pour overs with the extra accessories you can get from Decent.

I´m a coffe (addicted) lover (coffe drinks me 😀) and I want to buy an espresso machine and watched a lot of different reviews and I´m overwhelmed with those different models. I´ve found the decent espresso machine and it makes me curious and maybe I´m "open minded (or say crazy) enough, to buy this machine but I would feel better, if there where at least a service station in europe. Maybe, I will look for a espresso machine (like Lelit Bianca) from my local shop, where I can have the service procedure less complicated (or I buy the picopresso ). By the way, I like he cool halo in te back! :-D

Thank you very much for watching. I see your concerns. Even in UK where I live, if you buy machine from domestic suppliers you still need to send it to them in case of repair. I have learned it the hard way when courier lost my £2k machine and I was left with nothing. Lelit is ok, I would go for Londinium but that is just me.

Instead, buy a professional grinder and a Moka Express! 7g of fine ground and press it 4mm below rim. You get professional espresso without the maintenance!

FOUR THOUSAND Dollars (including 8% sales tax, excluding shipping) for a coffee machine is nuts. The only reasonable use case is commercial operation and it's not suitable for that.

It is pricey indeed and so it is this hobby. They do sell XXL Decent more suitable for pro usage.
