Have you ever used this to create a supersource type of shot? I bought one with intention to do so and am just tinkering with it now. I use the ATEM 1 M/E and the PiP is less than ideal.
@djp_video
@djp_video 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't personally done this. This unit would work for that if you're willing to live with some of the limitations. For example, since it doesn't have loop-through outputs, any of your video sources would either have to be split to go to the QUAD and a switcher input, or be dedicated to the QUAD. And your options for borders are more limited as well. It can be made to work, though it isn't necessarily ideal.
@cleantones

There definitely are limitations. Thank you. I have Decimator cross converters between my ATEM and cameras. The second outputs could feed the DMON. I wish the DMON could crop. I might make an overlay with areas to key out letting a couple of well placed sources come through on the DMON. Unfortunately it pillar boxes 4:3 content and a lot of my workflow still has 4:3 PC feeds.@@djp_video

Hi Doug, the PIP option looks good for something I need. Is it possible though to crop the PIP screen? I see you can stretch the window and aspect ratio but I'd like to be able to add a square PIP with a signer and just crop out the edges a bit, I didn't see that as an option on the setup screen can you remember if that was possible?

@@djp_video No problem, thanks Doug. I have actually bought an ATEM Mini to do this on the output of my 1 M/E 4K, so that I can record a clean feed, but it does mean using a short bit of HDMI. The DMON looks a more sturdy solution. I'll look it up on Decimator Design.

Hi Doug, forgive me if you mentioned it in video I might have missed it, am I correct that you don't need to have it hooked up to a computer in order to switch between views or custom presets? Is it only necessary to preset certain buttons on the front of the device itself so that once disconnected they can be predefined to the actual buttons?

I have DMON-QUAD outputting 2 windows to a LiveU Solo encoder. 1080p works fine, but I can't seem to get the LIveU to recognize any of my 720p formats? I've tried changing the Decimator window layout down to 1280x720p to match the output size, but that didn't solve it. I can output the Decimator SDI and hdmi to a monitor at 720p no problem, but it's 720p SDI or hdmi output is not recognized by the LiveU. Any thoughts about Decimator settings to check for 720p output? thank you!

What SDI repeaters do you recommend if we want to extend our connection an additional 100-300feet? Great video btw.
@djp_video
@djp_video 6 жыл бұрын
You can use basically any device that passes through an SDI signal to regenerate it. Even something as simple as the Decimator MD-LX (djp.li/mdlx) or Blackmagic Design SDI-to-HDMI Micro Converter (djp.li/bmdms2h) ... the feature you're looking for is "reclocking" and most devices that have the ability to pass through an SDI signal do that today. There are dedicated devices meant specifically for this purpose, but they don't really bring much by the way of advantages to the table. If you want a solution that doesn't require active (powered) devices along the run, consider running the signals over fiber. A pair of BMD Optical Fiber Mini Converters (djp.li/bmdof) along with singlemode fiber (blue LC connectors) will let you run for miles.

Doug, off-topic, but I notice your video (of you in the multiview, and also on the views in the background) is delayed. Is this from your switcher, or something else? And do you do anything to combat it in a live situation when outputting to projectors?
@djp_video
@djp_video 6 жыл бұрын
By far, the majority of the delay is the LCD monitors themselves. The delay from images entering the cameras to switcher output is about two frames, so it's hardly noticeable.
@shawnkay8649

True. Either the LCD monitors or the camera or device outputs. In fact in my experience the camera or device out has the most lag.

@djp_video
@djp_video Жыл бұрын
You won't have any latency from the HDMI cable, and if you do a simple conversion from HDMI to SDI (no scaling or frame rate conversion) there won't be noticeable latency there. But the DMON-QUAD will add a little bit of latency as it scales the source video to a window.

If this is plugged into a projector, and one of the quad inputs drops signal, this won't cause the projector to renegotiate the hdmi signal, right? The way the DMON QUAD works is kind of like the "HDMI lock" you see on the Blackmagic 6G converters?

Doug, thanks for reviewing the device! Pretty cool little box. I run a one-man show with an ATEM TVS HD, could I use this device as a PIP type device? @djp_video

Absolutely! The one thing that might be nice to have, which you can get on a higher end product, is looping outputs so the signal chain doesn't have to terminate at the Multiviewer. But if you can afford to dedicate a couple of outputs, this is a perfect product for that.

I'm kind of new at this stuff (excluding security CCTV setups over 14 years ago) -- I'm actually a Software Developer/Sysadmin looking to solve for a specific project I was placed on. Basically, my task is to overlay our cable TV output with some company notifications, news, etc within a common room. While I have the platform for the notifications already figured out, my thought was that I could use a few BlackMagic HDMI=>SDI (BNC) converters, and feed both the notification content and the TV together with the DMON-QUAD in a custom layout (85/15 split). However, as I am new at this type of thing, I am not 100% certain, and do not want to waste company money. However, after watching your review on the DMON-QUAD, it sounds even more like what I would need to do. Do you see any issues that would prevent my plan of using a multiplexer/multiviewer to combine the two video sources from working?
@djp_video
@djp_video 5 жыл бұрын
I no longer have this so I can't test it for you, but you may have difficulty getting the 15% thing to work. I didn't test to see if you can have one of the view windows go off-screen, you might be forced to have that 15%-size window be really stretched horizontally to get it to fill the screen but not actually go off-screen. You may be better off getting an old BMD Television Studio switcher and using the Luma Key feature of it to overlay the text on top of the video.

@djp_video
@djp_video 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you could do that. But you'd want to make sure that the scale is 100%, and that the resolution/frame rate match your sources. If you do any resizing or there's a difference in frame you'd be losing quality.

Is there any tool to measure signal strength? or do you use any ?
@djp_video
@djp_video 2 жыл бұрын
Knowing signal strength really doesn't tell you anything. When an SDI signal breaks down it is usually due to other issues, like the "frequency response" of the cable. Over long runs higher frequencies and cheaper cables are attenuated more than lower frequencies. Also, higher frequencies travel faster than do lower frequencies, so with long cable runs they can get out of sync enough that it's impossible to decode them. So instead of a device to check signal strength, a device that lets you see a visual representation of the quality of the signal is more useful. This is done using an eye pattern. In my Diagnostic Tools video I demonstrate and talk about a device that is capable of doing just that. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7uGqZyAzrmognU.html

@djp_video

You can take four outputs of the routing switcher and feed them into the inputs, then take the output and feed that back into the routing switcher. And then route whichever four sources you want within the routing switcher to the QUAD, and send the quad view to any destinations you'd like within the routing switcher.

@AusEdge
@AusEdge 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, single will give you longer distances at higher bandwidth. Not much of an issue however with a single SDI 12G signal. But can certainly start to effect you if you start playing with multiplexing to get several pictures from A-B. I would recommend going single mode. When it comes to compatibility of 12G and single/multi mode, the cable is not going to be your bottleneck, it will be the bits of kit at each end you will need to be ultra careful with selecting.

Do I need to purchase something like this divice you are showing in this video and one switcher yes or not? Does the Decimator Design DMON-QUAD 4-Channel SDI MultiViewers good for those kinds of online live streaming and video performance or it just for offline shows? And if yes, where or how i should connect it into my audio signal flow to show the live video with sound online? I have two video camaras just with usb connection plus the two builtin camara of my two apple computer, which are one Imac desktop and one laptop, plus my audio setting in my home studio which is a Digital MiDA M32 live and recording mixer 40 channel, my two speakers monitors and my interface and some other gears.

It would work fine for live work, if a multi-viewer is what you need. Audio would have to be processed separately. This device doesn't mix audio from multiple sources. If you have audio from your cameras that you need to include, you'd want to extract that and send it to your mixer.
