With a mast that is beyond economic repair we have ordered a new mast but it’s too big for the existing hole in the Contessa 32 deck so modification is needed to fit a new Selden Deck ring on Lottie.

About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

The artificial light in the workshop makes the colour look wrong but it’s fine on the boat. Thanks for watching. To be fair I had the colour matched gel made for me by someone that is very skilled at matching, also a lot faster and better than I could do it.

Maybe I missed the explanation but it appeared you ground the aft end of the mast hole flush with the coach roof but left the forward end a bit proud. How did you arrive at the angle to get the correct fit?

great video as always. Many thanks. can i ask what resin you were using and what you used to thicken it for the filling? Cheers!
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
The adhesive filler I used for bonding the ring to the deck is prethickened (probably with somthing like cabosil) and also have fine chipped glass strands in it. It’s good for quick non structural repairs! I say non structural but it’s bonding strength is very good if the surfaces are well prepped.

You always do such nice work and make it look easy. One question, when you put the flat base ring on the deck, I know you stuck the little piece of wood under the front to hold it up....but did you make the ring level or was that not a concern?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The ring is fitted to be close as horizontal as possible, the mast should pass though it at close to 90 deg. Absolute horizontal or vertical are all relative on a boat with so many curved surfaces and on a moving sea!

Sealant between deck ring and deck. Then the normal rubber gaiter or boot between deck ring and mast.

@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Hi Yann, it’s a Pre-mixed polyester filler/adhesive (it is Pre thickened and includes glass strands) not sure if the brand I use would be available where you are but I am sure there will be something very similar in the chandlery.

Yes absolutely, the deck ring needs a bedding compound or sealant between it and the deck. I mostly use Sabatack 750xl but there are lots of alternatives.

Beautiful videos, love it, just a rooky question from me, why don´t you just order a new mast that will fit the old deck ring?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Thanks. We could have done that if buying the stick from one of the other mast manufacturers but in the end the customer wanted to go with a Selden mast and either way I was going to have to fit a deck ring of some sort to allow the lines to be led aft and in the grand scheme this was a pretty small job.

God, You're good. But the part you couldn't film is important to me. What tool(s) did you use to cut out the deck under the ring? Why not cut before you installed the ring? Thanks, G.
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
I cut the deck using the same oscillating tool used to remove the old GRP upstand/collar but with a long plunge-cut blade. I cut it after I installed the flat area because I wanted to put the Selden deck ring in the hole and draw around the inside so I only removed what was necessary rather than over-enlarging the hole. Hope that makes sense.

@@TheFlyingPlectrum ah, right, I do quite a lot off camera for the sake of expediency and try to talk about it after, I’m on the clock for my client and sometimes I just have to crack on without the camera. Before placing I made sure alignment was all good and then drew the location line around the moulding before grinding back the deck.

@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
When you include all the additional items needed such as lights, vhf antenna, new boom, gas-strut rod kicker, standing and running rigging and numerous other bits and bobs you are into 12-14k (inc vat). The mast on its own is about 6k

New mast, new boat! I've always wondered what an old non-IOR hull would do with a modern spar. Is the new mast the same height as the old?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
New mast will comply with the co32 one-design class specification so no taller or change in rig dimensions. It would be nice to see if there was any weight difference between old and new masts but I doubt it will make a fundamental difference in the performance of the boat. A taller carbon rig on the other hand would be interesting…
