There are two sides to every story. Many people from former Ottoman territories today still resent the Ottomans. However it's the same with any empire, the Ottomans were no worse than anyone else (in fact they were probably a lot better). I don't see why people can't have a balanced view, instead it's either over-glorified, white-washing about how wonderful the Ottomans were, or over-the-top hatred and ranting and raving about how bad they were. How about we just accept them for what they were? Nearly every nation throughout history, if it had the military and diplomatic ability, expanded and created empires. It wasn't because they were evil, it was simply because they could. The Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Mongolians, Arabs, Ottomans, British..... they did what is human nature, with the advantage they had at the time. Let go of the guilt, admire and respect, but also learn for the future not to make the same mistakes.

+tosgem This is all well and good, but the fact remains that some countries under Ottoman rule suffered a lot because of cultural and religious differences. Had they been conquered or under the rule of some other christian nation - I can only speak for Hungary in this case - the strain inflicted might have been less. For about 150 years, the country was a buffer zone for Austria and the Ottoman. During this period - as far as I'm aware - the population under Ottoman rule had declined drastically because those who ruled them wanted to get as much wealth from them as possible, since the land belonged to the sultan and they only used it for a limited time. I have no hate for the turkish people of today, but that doesn't mean I have to like what happened in the past.

Of course it wasn't all gloom or doom. But at least for the christians under the ottoman rule it was mostly not a very pleasent thing. Paying higher taxes, not being allowed basic rights. Then there was the blood tax (taking of christian children) and also regular kidnapping of christian brides. So much, that in some regions there were only weddings when there were at least half a dozen couples, in order to be able to fend off any such attempt. It is no coincidence that those parts who stayed the longest time under ottoman rule are less developped even till today (at least in Europe).

Beat that Strawman hard, Esteban Perz. No one said christian and no one said muslim. This was, obviously, a decision of the Turkish state not Islam. Islam only allowed room for such a morally bankrupt action. Obviously your mind cannot handle the assertion that 'non-whites' can be racist and morally bankrupt assholes.

Ottomans sick man period is like Todays USA. If people remembered fondly of the Ott Empire, there wouldn't be middle east like todays mess. And it was against the will of colonialists. There was even jewish disguising in muslim clothes and rebelling against state asking for Sheria law rule in modern Turkey. That level of oxymoron and manipulation within society, and with no modern media, pulling off games is somehow easier, because people are not informed on subjects during action. Many false propaganda has been carried out. And the peace within society was heavily injured. And all this was caused due to the necessity to centeralize the power in Istanbul. And that was a perfect fit for Europe's dreams. Because whole world was changing towards more and more centeralized states. And that was completely against the nature of the Ott Empire. You can see a similar faith happening to USA today. They get more and more centeralized, populist and one way of being American. And actually thats against the diverse and local culture of USA, more or less every other city is originally different. But now, that trend is changing. Especially, gentrification makes us loose the real history of cities. Everywhere becomes similar, a trendy cafe in china, a trendy cafe in Stockholm, if you just look at the image you cant guess where you are anymore. Americans will also i guess due to that, become a society where fractions fight with each other openly and thus tolerance decaying. Today USA has way heavier international Intelligence activity within its borders, compared to its history. This also was the case in Ottoman Empire, through the end, a huge influx of foreign intelligence services. Because country can not project enough power. Finally there is one more similarity which i think is the main reason for all of the above. Just like North Atlantic trade deal, Pacific trade deal on the way, Ottomans were crumbling under heavy economical give aways, to more competant countries. China and India by itself is like this today against America. And Americans loose more and more their freedom to put the price tag on for their own products. One similar empire that has certain similarity is Ancient China, but throughout History they have evolved to a Nation where a big margin feels connected and similar, unlike history, where every village has its own way of being a buddhist. But they changed that especially with Culture Revolution, some argue that it proves to be useful. But i think that it caused China to become from a poetically beautiful Empire with fine art and culture, to a concrete farm with no oxygen to smell and no taste not pleasurable architecture at all nearly.

All true, but you missed the point. The reason for the Ottoman (and Austrian-Hungarian) empire decline was the change in the creation of wealth. The Ottoman were a trading/agricultural empire the new European empires were industrial based. The Ottoman empire was well placed to take advantage of trade and agriculture but was less well endowed with resources of the new industrial revolution. Other factors may have contributed and/or exacerbated but the change from trading/agriculture to industrial was the fundamental cause.

And no, not all is true. Get some facts from history that actually took place. Learn the life of Muhammad and you will learn the mind of a Muslim. There is no radical Islam and moderate Islam. There is only 1 Islam. There is no perforation between Muhammad slaughtering all that were non Muslim so Islam could create the Ottoman Empire and Pakistan finally becoming a state 70 years ago after a 1,000 year campaign of genocide against India. It's seamless from one to the other and done by the same faith. Now they create a lie called Palestine and look to gain more land from Israel. There is and never was a Palestine nor a Palestinian from a land called Palestine. Science has already proved that to be a fact.

Only if your history teacher is a Christian KKK grand wizard you will get this view Your statements are an affront to history and science on the whole and shows a mindset that is completely isolated from real life. It also shows complete uneducated or religious isolation and an oblivious view of subjective facts. If you read the Old testament you will see the mind of Christians and Jews? so wrath and genocide is allowed? stoning people to death and the keeping of slaves as well? you are saying all Christians and Jews are like this? BECAUSE THE CHRISTIAN AND JEWISH SCRIPTURES ARE ISLAM'S scriptures. Jesus and Moses are part of Islam, they'r teachings are Islams teachings. There is only education, and the lacking of. That is what you have in common with the extremist Islamist, fool.

+Aleksia min skatt USA is an empire, How ? you may ask.. sweetie, the ultimate goal of any empire used to invade, conquer and then pillage the resources of the invaded land. this is old school, thing of the past when you could not have US dollar as the only currency for international trade enforced by various means, only currency to trade oil because US declares a war on them. Saddam is an example. World bank and IMF to subjugate entire countries through their corrupt leaders. When you get a chance, read the book titled "Confessions of the economic hitman" by John Perkins and you will understand the game. you will understand how it is being done in this new world. Once upon a time, America was the greatest country in the world and it is continuously going down in pretty much every field. There are several reasons for it, one is Americans being in denial of this reality. I am an American myself and I do not take any pleasure in saying all of this rather I am bleeding from inside.

One of the biggest reasons for their decline was the sultans and Islam's growing opposition to science and innovation. The printing press was banned on penalty of death for over 400 years in favour of traditional calligraphy. As a result, literacy rates in the Ottoman Empire remained shockingly low compared to Europe. A sharp contrast with the Islamic golden era where science, mathematics and technology was championed.

Yes. And now in the US we public are captive to 'fake' news and even 'fake' legislation where bills are passed in the last days of an administration merely to have them mitigated by the new administration. Actual legislation is passed on the sly and under cover of a nonsense media storm. The military seems to govern itself with goals of world domination with western expansion exactly the author describes as seen in the failure to take Vienna. Note the failure of public education here in the US. Note that the numbers of hires from India and China. Note that the wars in the MIddle East and the coming wars in Africa are underwritten by keeping strong men in power by Visa bribes for entire sects and power groups. The US does not have a single tech improvement to offer. We are spinning drone warfare and selling cars. Cel phones are radios. Fusion will never happen. The rest of the world is actually practicing solar while we lag. Clean water will define the future survivors lives.

Something that has to be said: the Ottomans were not idiots. They took gunpowder, made it a weapon and used Christians as the primary soldiers given their penchant for loyalty. They took advantage of their geographic position to profit off the trade between Europe and Asia. During WWI they hired help from Germany to get their military on par with the rest of the world. The problem is that the culture couldn't translate to the modern era.

I agree that economic reasons of the fall were the main ones but there were other factors. Ottoman Empire was constantly at war. There were numerous wars with Austria, Poland and Russia that continually drained manpower and wealth of the empire in 17th and 18th century. Those war are not known (because they were stalemate or minor gains for European powers) but if you read how many people participated and died in them you would be astonished.

@@Regard1ess The idea is that the Ottomans banned the Europeans from trading with Persia, India and Arabia, and in doing so, forced the Europeans to attempt to find other routes to these trading partners. This got the Portugese to work on long distance naval travel, eventually setting up a trading empire in Africa and the Indian Ocean, and then the Americas were discovered by the Spanish. But I don't know that much about this stuff, so it may not be correct.

Alpha Zey Very true. If the gradual decline of the Ottoman Empire could be traced back to one single event it would definitely be Suleiman the Magnificent's execution of his most intelligent and capable son Mustafa. This single act (which Suleiman later greatly regretted) is what caused his least capable son Selim to suceed him as Selim II who was a drunkard and a fool by most accounts. Selim II was the first of several weak, foolish and ineffective sultans (his son Murad III, Ibrahim, Mustafa I) that lead to a domino effect of social, economic and military decline in the Ottoman Empire. Luckily in between the period of gradual decline there were a few stronger, intelligent, and more capable sultans that temporarily halted the decline such as Murad IV, Ahmed I, and Suleiman II but unfortunately it wasn't enough.

The religious minorities within the Ottoman Empire were protected by law, and religious non-Muslim minorities had to pay religious tax called Cizye in order not to serve in the Ottoman army. The only way for a non-Muslim to avoid the Cezye tax was by converting to Islam.

If Israel does help Turkey, it's probably because we saved so many Jews in WW2. America and other countries didn't accept many Jews, some of them were returned. Why should I like a country that acts as a super power, while it is a puppet! Why would I respect a country that uses the name of Islam for its own benefits? Why should I have respect for a nation that blames all of its mistakes on others (Arabs, Kurds, Bosnians, Albanians, Armenians...), and plays the victim role at all times! Why would I sympathy with a nation that its leaders, who are all theives, are the rules! Why would I have respect for a nation that always claims the work of others as its own, while it is not! What did Turkey do for Bosnia-Herzegovina since 14th century and until today!

He actually is biased. He didn't mention that most of the Christian soldiers in the Ottoman Empire were actually kidnapped since they were children. They didn't stay Christian as they were raised Muslim, many Christians revolt because of this but were brutally suppressed every time. The Ottomans also helped other Muslim empires raid Europe and Africa for more slaves to use in their harems and their armies.

I find it very interesting that it is almost impossible especially back then to see the sign of your own decline until it brought to the forefront by some huge disasters. I find that most important battles in history are usually only important because of what happens after the battle, meaning that no strong state can be defeated in a single battle. I think the best example of this Manziert, the battle was a crushing defeat but it was only by exploiting the disunity of the empire following it that the Turks were able to bring the Byzantines to the edge of destruction.

You know, when times are hard and your leader is an idiot, they'll blame the immigrant, the outsiders , the infidel and so on. Interestingly, the symptom can be seen on america today with donald trump... The Ottoman is an empire that live for a thousand of years, you can't judge them like you judge a person... Times change.. sometime they are peaceful and huge empire where million of people with different background live prosperously, sometime they full nazi and killing everyone..It depends on the leader and the crisis of the time

I have a buddy with the same rationale as you and you both need to pull your heads from between your legs. "Decline" in reference to the US will lead to a devastating domestic array of problems including vast increases in the prices of goods, seizure of industry growth, less domestic and foreign security, etc. if you don't worry about it before it effects you, you're inviting hardship on yourself and others. So don't scoff at the adults who understand not only the importance of history but the need to engage in pertinent debates aiming to avoid becoming the next failed empire.

The reason it was ahead was because they inherited the whole of Byzantine learning and history. You are making it sound like the Ottomans developed this civilization. The Ottomans were a nomadic people. They didn't know how to live in cities and didn't know how to develop urban technology. The fact that they conquered the Byzantines (the empires more or less have the same footprint) is responsible for their achievements. Their architecture is completely based on the Byzantine prototype. The reason their empire started to fall was because there was nothing left to conquer, and as a result, income and development by conquest ceased.

i am so glad that we are done with all sorts of empires. the best and the only way to run a country is secular democratic republic. one person who realized this fact was kamal pasha at-turk. i am glad he did the right thing by deposing the sultan and expelling him from the country. i just learned that though kamal pasha was a good man, but he did not protect greek and arminian minorities in south west turkey when greek forces withdrew. the greek and arminians were robbed, and killed. the rest were expelled. the greeks did the same to turkis minority in their country. RELIGION MADE BOTH SIDES COMMIT ATROCITIES AGAINST MINORITIES.

We are in the era of economic empire. Do not think in terms of the empires of old... Assyrians, Romans, Ottomans, even the 19th century european empires... They are empires of the US Dollar, the Euro, the Yuan........ Economic empires, only marginally backed with military power. Play the game or pay the price.
