Melz who was the Education Officer in the University of Leeds and a recent graduate of the university gave her insight of the current curriculum in our generation speaking from experience in the form of both talking and rapping.
Melz is a recent graduate of Philosophy and Politics from the University of Leeds. She now serves as the Education Officer at Leeds University Union and is completing her second term in office. She is the pioneer of the ‘Why is My Curriculum White?’ campaign on campus.
Melissa is also an artist, using much of her spare time to write and perform Grime music. Recently, she headlined at the ‘gal-dem’ takeover over at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. She is deeply passionate about imaging new forms of knowledge, new ways of being and becoming, and believes that a transformative education system is one key way of achieving this.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The emotional attacks in the comments demonstrate fear in understanding perspective, this is what halts social progress. A lady with learning difficulties just gave a speech on TED and expressed her thoughts clearly and concisely. To understand and comment on what is being said, you need to understand colonialism, the history of the British empire, and most importantly you to understand that although someone has different experience to yours, it doesn't mean it must be undermined or mocked.

My opinion doesn't matter in that regard, but I'm glad someone highlighted it as a talking point.

Perhaps what is needed is a listen from human lived experiences, like the young female herself, as opposed to alleged ‘facts’ and biases as this only has been proven to exclude those from minority backgrounds. So, YES, no ‘facts’ because what we deem as a ‘fact’ is questionable to some regard as it is a reflection of a “reasonable person” which reflects a white middle class male. Why, then, should she include this as opposed to her human lived experience which reflects reality more then a mere fact???

@@lobbyskids2 I don't think her point was the type of art or their discrepant forms but rather that they can both be studied and used as implications for our wider society especially contextually speaking. So unless your comparison speaks to their different forms then it is futile because it's like you comparing a baked sweet potato to a banana, you esteeming a banana over a baked sweet potato would be silly since they are not even in the same category of food. Meanwhile, whilst they are two different types of plant products, they still have about the same approximate amount of potassium (450mg). The same can be said with Stormzy's rap and Shakespeare's plays. You can't really objectively say one is better that the other because the one lacks what the other has or vice versa. They are both goods respectively concerning potassium. Yes, Shakespeare is different from Stormzy but it doesn't mean you can't learn from art in the rap area compared to art in plays. The real reason that 16% of people of color are doing worse is probably because they let those students in not for their academic achievement but because the schools want to look diverse. If every Asian student for example gets straight A's, and they only let in 10% Asians, then the Asian students also have to have other things on their resume! Like volunteer work and extra curricular work! Thus they will probably do better than the person of color who was let in with lower standards for diversity reasons! But now lets ruin education because the kids getting in on lower standards can't keep up..... But I guess bias made you take philosophy instead of engineering. People did not believe you had a learning disability because you did too well in school. If they would have believed you, you would have taken engineering instead! She goes on about critical thinking. But critical thinking is not critical theory a Neo Marxism. Critical theory only pinpoints in art literature music biography people's sexism racism and other prejudices. That's not critical thinking. That's critical judgement. It's what everyone does. It's what morality in religion does. Compares the individual to a set of ideals to creat a perfect being. But critical theory is far more dangerous. Whilst religious criticism on culture and individualism is about changing yourselves. Not a whole group of people. And Watching your own behaviour towards others. Critical theory is a Neo Marxism Its role is to change the whole of society collectively. Even against individuals who do not want to comply. We have seen results of this in classic Marxist struggle. Millions of deaths. Destruction of books and monuments. Whilst most religion isn't really about colonialism but only accompanies colonialism. Marxism is colonialism.Cultural colonialism. And this is why she says education needs to be decolonised. So was china of its culture. Tibetan monks persecuted and having to live somewhere else for not complying. So no. Her ideas are anti western. Anti whiteness culture. In a society where she feels it doesn't honour her because it's too white. That's what critical theory told her. That she is a victim. When in fact she is not. She's indoctrinated as those communist thugs ripping up culture and its people who did not comply. Like Germans saying Germany is too Jewish and we need be decolonising it's culture of Jewishness so the German can feel German. This is All based on victim status that Marxism teaches.

Robert Nozick Robert Nozick you completely missed the whole point of this talk. You just focused on one part of the talk that you had a counter argument for. Students of colour underachieving is a fact. When you have students that only have that one thing - race - in common, and are underachieving compared to their white peers; there is clearly something wrong with the education system. Education system is supposed to be reflecting facts and knowledge gained over time, and be passing them over to younger generations. Here, the history of the education system is based on lies. White men, taking credit for discoveries and theories of an oppressed group. Instead of reflecting the facts and knowledge accurately, the education system is shaped to be comfortable for white people. White privilege exists whether we like it or not. That's why you're more less likely to be searched, arrested, rejected from work or university than a person of colour with the same experience. Because of your white skin colour and your white name, you have white privilege and so do I. That is not our fault, but we need to use that white privilege to stand up for those that are still, in 21st century, not represented fairly, to put an end to it.

those that are still, in 21st century, not represented fairly, to put an end to it. ---- the idea that nonwhites have some right to be represented "fairly" in institutions that were built by white europeans for the posterity of white europeans is a ridiculous idea. There is so such right. Nonwhites who are waging war against white people in their own countries and in their own institutions need to be rejected and expelled radically. Im a nonwhite. I'm glad to have been born at a time when i had the opportunity to participate in the civilization that white europeans have built . I'm happy that even though i had no birthright to this civilization, i was allowed to participate in it. It appears that the vast majority of nonwhites don't realize that they need to be GRATEFUL. That's too bad. It means that eventually they will be radically excluded. To serve as a home for successive generations of a Nation, which is a very large family. Your parents or grandparents came voluntarily to a predominantly white country and culture. Knowing they would be a minority. If you feel that you can’t integrate then return to that former country but ask yourself if you haven’t gained from your time here and focus on that rather than victim hood. That sense of gratitude might dispel this aggression you feel towards British culture and tradition. It is as all history is, imperfect but it is our story so just leave it alone.

She may be deeply skeptical but I wouldn't say that she is deeply critical. And if she is living in England and going to an English school, how is her education colonial?
@chrissie1303
@chrissie1303 Жыл бұрын
To explain how her education is colonial: she's talking about the curriculum, and (rightfully) arguing that the English curriculum is Eurocentric, meaning it disregards the real impacts of colonialism by skimming over the pain and lasting damage it caused people of colour. Calling education colonial is perhaps the wrong term, however the context she uses it in means she's describing it as biased towards white British history as it disregards and belittles people of colour's experiences during and after colonialisation- for example, it skims over the impacts and long lasting effects of slavery which are still massively prominent in modern-day society. Hope that helps :)
@ItaloGallese
@ItaloGallese Жыл бұрын
It is a bit thin on colonial history for sure. That can easily be solved by including a few weeks in the history syllabus. However, as for the rest the state sector educational system it is based on treating students equally. This is a European nation and therefore the bulk of material in schools will be British and European. I would expect an Arabic or Asian nation’s educational system to be primarily Arabic or Asian.
@chrissie1303
@chrissie1303 Жыл бұрын
@@ItaloGallese I agree- of course its main focus would be British history, or at least European history, however the way that British historical events (such as colonialism and imperialism) are taught is often in a way which glorifies Britain and ignores the pain they inflicted to ethnic minority groups. also Britain is culturally diverse; many British people also have afro-caribbean heritage, for example. therefore, the curriculum should acknowledge that by altering it's Eurocentric perspective.

@chrissie1303
@chrissie1303 Жыл бұрын
@@ItaloGallese no of course not- colonies have occurred for thousands of years in various corners of the world. But, we're discussing the British curriculum, and so, as you mentioned, we should focus on British history and hence, British colonialism. And if we're primarily focusing on British colonialism (as its the British curriculum), we will be touching on aspects of racism, and therefore, we would have to acknowledge the harsh reality of what that meant (and still means) for afro-caribbean and other ethnic minority groups.

Great presentation ! I remember checking out mentally during art history. I now realize that I subconsciously knew a lot of the programming was false. I feel that other highly melanated students intuitively know that some of the school programming was/is prejudiced by design. I think of it like a cleverly cheating narcissist husband. You have a feeling in your gut that something is wrong. But he gaslights you every time you catch him in a lie. He shames you for your questions and tries to make it seem like YOU are the problem. He then strategically (they don't know they are being used as tools) rally's up his supporters ( or flying monkeys) to tell you. Maybe you should be nicer to your husband. Look at all he does for you....he buys you this and gives you that. But until you are actually in her spot it seems like nothing needs changing. Why? ....... Decolonising the curriculum would give us ALL access to MORE knowledge! Bringing education full circle? I can't connect with a mind that would want to know less or would prefer biased information. GIVE ME EVERYTHING TRUTHFUL. So I can learn and discern and specialize. What most people don't realize is that the very things they were TRAINED to abhor is their own liberation. ( I don't feel like explaining in depth other than to say EVERYONE is getting short changed.) Many hold tight to the concepts of race meanwhile we all have to share the same chemtrailed air, food that is decreasing in nutritional value, seedless and inorganic. The pineal gland and other endocrine systems are under attack by disruptive food/additives like aspartame and fluoride., critical thinking/feeling sliced in half....OR zapped completely. , I was at 3 different art/ science centers recently ( with unbiased knowledge in my PROGRAM) and saw how the presenters strategically find a way to present the material and OMIT where the information came from originally- as if the word AFRICAN or AFRICA burns the tongue. An assault on our education and general existence has affected us all. What separates robots from humans is the ability to empathize, rationalize and change course based on new information. This society is riddled with NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER. SIMS Just like a proper narcissist they withhold what society needs. Cures for diseases, truth in education, truth about our existence and so many other things. People should try not to be an Non Player Character and actually step into a more meaningful role with more parts of their brains and bodies illuminated with truth. By the way, the beef/dairy industry sponsors the heart/ cancer associations. MANY medication manufacturers give doctors commission on prescriptions they write to you. They were two main publishers for ALL of the text books in the west hailing from Europe... Palmers and I forget the other... I'm super tired but it bugs me to see ppl of all the nations getting fooled and taken advantage of. Lastly sometimes I come across information printed in scientific journals that say this or that is impossible. Meanwhile, I have experienced said thing. lol ESP related etc... When I choose friends I look at the heart. I can normally tell their level of intelligence by how they interact with me. I can see the depth of western influence. (You can be western and be cool af.... but that's always purposeful. ) (YOU ARE TRAINED TO BE ADVERSE TO THE TRUTH/PREJUDICED) I see everything else as well but it's about the resonance with truth. NO one likes to feel gas-lit or undervalued. I generally can't get deep with people that have not also experienced SELF EDUCATION beyond public schools. (Which is this presenters point) It's like she saying lets OPEN the cage so we can all roam freely and people in the comments are like. "Dont open the cage, I like it in here"? Like you want to eat pellets for the rest of your life? What about a SANDWICH???? @The OA on Netflix LOL. Lastly, Check out the work by Jane Elliot my friends. Travel outside of America, or your birth place, travel the world.... At this point I feel like I should thank god and my mother like they do in all the award shows ! lol.....We can doooo it people. We got this! xo Power to the sentients :p

Whole of the world can use non-western theories which are bound to fail. Western economic theory failed, i mean all of the theories failed. You can use the theories of indian civilization which is 20000 years old and still continuing with pride. I know the people seek for an alternative and when they don't find it they are bound to go for failed and corrupted theories. Hey! Take our philosophy of life where you treat everybody out of respect where you have a fear and joy of karma. Individual thinks of the society and nation before him. Where families and home are like heaven. Where you worship nature and take care of it in every possible way. Take our mathematics from zero to continuous series to calculus to algebra to trigonometry. Take the name of branch of mathematics and you will find its origin in india. Take our sports from badminton to chess which develops critical thinking. Take our Arthashastra and whole of the worlds economic problems will be solved. Take our psychological consciousness theories and sound mechanism theories which are very new and fancy to the western world. We have whole bunch of theories and their practical results that made india wealthiest country in the World till 1750s but these western colonizers looted our country, made us poor and also corrupted our history. And made us forget our true past. Thus i say to the westerners take away you theories apply non westerns great theories and world will be pro environment and a safer educated society with inner well being and state of high consciousness.
