"A classic Sci-fi/Horror once taught us that ‘in space no one can hear you scream’ and it’s a lesson that served filmmaker’s well ever since. Transporting us to the International Space Station for his latest scary story, returning filmmaker Josh Tanner once again showcases a flair for visuals in Decommissioned, a science-fiction short created with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.
Like Tanner’s previous S/W feature Wandering Soul, though his film is very much a fantasy, the inspiration came from an actual IRL event. “Old faithful Wikipedia led us to the real-life Suitsat experiment“, the director explains as we discuss the origins of his narrative. “We thought it was just too dang creepy not to craft a horror story around. Also it continues our trend of turning bizarre true happenings into genre shorts”.
Set years after the transmitting spacesuit was deployed in orbit around Earth, Tanner’s six-minute film introduces us to Commander Diaz, an astronaut currently inhabiting the ISS. While his fellow crew member’s sleep, Diaz is snapping photos out of one of the station’s observational windows, all is calm until his spots an unusual piece of “debris” floating towards them. Contacting Houston, the control centre see no evidence of the Commander’s sighting, but as interference starts to hamper their radio signal, Diaz starts to believe this might be the original Suitsat…but it can’t be, that original suit “re-entered the atmosphere and burnt up years ago”.
With previous short The Landing employing a “great deal of VFX work” to create its mid-west America setting in Australia and Tanner building a replica of the Viet Cong tunnels on a sound stage for Wandering Soul, the director has made a name for himself through a series of hugely impressive shorts boasting an aesthetic of feature quality. Though created through Unreal Engine’s Short Film Initiative, which funded films that utilised its games engine in production, don’t expect a video game feel to Decommissioned, as it’s use of physical sets and rear-projection give it a classic sci-fi feel.
Aiming to “notch up the ambition” from the previous films, Tanner nad his crew wanted to take on another VFX heavy project so they could improve their filmmaking through the process. Though the filmmaker admits he didn’t have the resources of The Mandalorian available, through a workflow which involved piping Unreal Engine through rear projection they were able to create a production which employed “zero green screen during the shoot”.
With the games engine then employed to create the “100% CG shots”, Tanner credits the initiative, supported by Epic Games and Screen Queensland, and the monumental support from post-production facility Cutting Edge, who handled the virtual production technology and entire picture post-production process, for getting his project off the ground. “The script sat in a drawer for 3 years because we felt the traditional VFX pipeline would just be too expensive for a little short like this”, he explains. Adding that the filmmaking scheme helped him to see “the potential to make it with this incredible new technology”.
I concluded my write-up of Wandering Soul by mentioning it was ‘surely only a matter of time before Tanner’s flair for genre storytelling sees him helm his debut feature’ and Decommissioned surely backs-up this statement. With “a bunch of different genre projects in development”, it’s surely. only. a. matter. of. time." - S/W Curator Rob Munday

Atmospheric, claustrophobic and creepy AF with a tense, believable performance from actor Joey Vieira, this is one of the best horror shorts I've ever seen. The lack of clunky exposition explaining what's happening just ups the creep factor by a thousand and I LOVE IT. 10/10 for space horror.

That was brilliant. I loved it. Sometimes space isn’t all about aliens or air running out. The hopelessness of nowhere to run and no one to call for help really dug deep, I wish there was more! The actor Joey Vieira did a phenomenal job on his performance. I was hooked the whole time. Great job I give “Decomissioned” a 5 out of 5 stars

Everything was fantastic apart from the ending. The jump scare was unnecessary and ruind the pace for me. Something more subtle woould have been better. More haunting. Like maybe the suit just floats by with Diaz watching it. Then cut to a POV shot from inside the suit as it looks out at the empty portal on the ISS then pulls back to reveal Diaz's face in the helmet.

@AdityaPratama-tr8ec 2 жыл бұрын
@@misterjei If the Foundation can't simply bring it back inside orbit and make it burn itself away I think it's going to be Euclid or Keter. The containment procedure when recapturing the suit fails would be to try it to locate it using different methods including visual tracking (if possible) and try to steer any manned space mission from its orbit, or to cooperate other SCP to neutralize the subject. They could also make one D boi as a bait but that's probably too expensive even for the foundation to schedule a regular space fishing. Nonetheless if all else fail, containment procedure would possibly be the installment of SCP agent in every manned space mission to purposefully disguise the disappearance of space crews around the globe (amnestic and shit) since, you can't really control the situation from Earth, then again maybe the SCP already has amnestic effect as seen on screen he's able to either somehow just distort the radio communication or distort reality itself. Commander Diaz is probably inside the subject's pocket dimension by the time he saw that suit. If that's the case than the problem sorts itself out (there is no anomaly if there is no one to witness it). Idk, these are probably standard procedures, someone else might be able to put up a creative way to incorporate other SCPs.

That unreal engine is an amazing piece of tack - Back in late 1990s? early 2000 ? - A guy who worked as a warden at a local art museum - Was heavily into the computer scene in his spare time - He recreated the interior of the museum using a version of the Unreal Engine - right down to the art within the gallery - To promote this achievement there was a open night at the gallery - Where there was a few different computer game networks for few people to sit at a screen & All play the same game - Also was a giant screen as large as the side of a house - And the Computerised Museum was used as the location in the game of - UNREAL TOURNAMENT - to take place - It was really good - We got there too early - But we were let in out of the cold fortunately - Which lead to my son Lewis having over a full hour on this Giant Behemoth of consol game ! - He had it all to his self for over an hour the lucky guy ! - I still have the photographs somewhere But I was really impressed of what the engine could do back them - What it's capable of now is mind boggling !

You're right. While I was watching that scene it just didn't feel quite right but I really couldn't figure out what the real problem with it is. I don't know how it maybe should have been done, exactly, but it does need something, even if it's just a little bit different. I sure the writer or director doesn't feel that way and did it the way he wanted to and how he really believed would have the most impact on the viewer.

Remember in "2001", when Frank goes EVA, and the pod _starts to move by itself?_ Instead of the suitsat suddenly moving with that jumpscare sound, how about if it's just hanging there motionless, not even facing him... ...inside the chamber. Or it's outside, facing him, with the interior of the helmet in shadow, but it looks _much too large._

I've been watching some great UE5 short films and after this one appeared in my feed, I thought this was the best human rendering I'd ever seen. After watching the film, I then went to find the team who did this but found out it was a real human filmed with extra UE5 effects added after! Description needs to make it clear that the human is real not CGI - I say this because UE5 has almost transcended the uncanny valley so it's important for everyone to know if the humans are real or not. The film is still great but it's now lost it's edge now that I know the guy was not generated in UE5. PS. I reckon it'll be less than 5-10 years and actors as we know it will be looking for a new career because UE5 and AI is changing the whole filming industry. Just imagine, no more paying $millions to over paid actors, in fact it'll be the real crafts men and women behind the cameras that will become the real stars of the future and totally justified IMHO. Can't wait for the first big studio to commit to a full length feature (a real life story, not action movie) without any real actors and all done with UE5, motion-capture and incredible artists, who else would love to see that? How refreshing would that be?

i don't understand why he was so scared of that suit? the reaction should be: "hey. it's that suit we threw out as a joke. look at it goes. cool."

The reason he reacted that way is because it could probably damage some part of the ISS, small chips of paint are enough to damage or destroy the ISS, now imagine if something bigger than a paint chip hits it. Like a space suit for example, that is until the ghost showed up and took his soul and body.

he reacted that way because it was stated that it's orbit would decay in weeks, as it doesn't have the push to keep going. It's scary knowing somehow it's still orbiting and sending unknown transmissions
