I hear you on the Westerns being on all the time at Grandparents houses Prof. Especially those of us in the south. Whenever we went to my grandparents (paternal) My grandpa was either watching Westerns or Bull Riding, his favorite sport.

Rio Bravo is one of my favorite movies of all time. I also really love The Searchers.

I just bought Rio Bravo a couple weeks ago. I watched it when I was very young and I remember liking the themes of the underdog Sheriff and his ragtag bunch of allies being able to overcome the outlaw and his brother’s mercenaries. All of Sheriff’s Chances allies were capable strong characters who had their own weaknesses. Great film

"Outland" is High Noon in space and I think had a better feeling and message. Corruption yes, but Sean Connery holds his position without being conflicted. Team building is another good side effect. A nicer script?

I watched a bunch of Westerns when I was a kid. I didn’t hate High Noon. I did see a lot of nihilism in it but it didn’t take any established character with a set history and then deconstruct him and leave him forever broken. I mean I know they deconstructed the American Monolith. However, I’m less offended with deconstructing ideas than characters like Superman.
